Got an interview offer from one of the big 4 IB Firms (GS/Citi/JPMC/MS). Good compensation but have to move to NY :marseypuke: Should I go or refuse?

Got the mail like 15 minutes ago

!fincels !peakpoors !fellas anyone with NYC experience, is a $120k (without bonus, median $180k with bonus) enough for a single male to survive in NYC with some dignity?

First year joinees can usually make upto $300-$500k but thats in the top 5%ile. I'm not that ambitious, ruthless or intelligent.

Also, they called me on 8th Feb 8:30 in the morning. There would be a mixer session from 9-10 with senior partners. How tf do you even dress for that.

:marseyaaatremble#: I'm having a panic attack. I have wanted to switch to sell side research for a long time. Now that the dream is close by I'm very nervous.

How old are you? $120k kind of sucks for banking in NYC but if you don't live in Manhattan you'll easily make it work financially. If you're young, it might be worth doing just to get your foot in the door & network your way to an actually-good job later.

$120k is base compensation

No upper limit

I'm 26

Current total compensation is $130

It's probably a good career move, then.

Expect to work your butt off though. I always hear horror stories of bankerboys preparing useless slide decks and spreadsheets at 1 am for some client presentation the next day.

Just accept you'll spend 3 hours a day commuting.

You can survive on that, just don't be an r-slur and live in Manhattan. Also make sure you share insider information with your drama friends :marseybegging: (if you get any, sounds like a low level position tbh)

It's not that much for NYC but you can prob get promotions and stuff right? It's better to think long term.

Yes, Senior Analyst is a given after 9m to 1 year and junior portfolio manager once I complete my charter. Compensation would also get a nice bump of upto 250k.

I have no problem with slogging but I really hate working with "other" kinds of people (iykwim)

Do it for a year or two just to get it on your resume and have fun in NYC. The drawbacks of bug life are greatly lessoned if you have a real job

Plus, I hear the dating ratio in NYC is really distorted so men have an easy time dating attractive women :marseyshrug:

>The drawbacks of bug life are greatly lessoned if you have a real job

Burying myself at work and pushing for 14 hours a day is nothing for me. It's pretty easy compared to my previous jobs.

>Dating ratio of NYC doesn't interest me because I have truly become a volcel.

I guess I'm worried about nothing.

As long as you don't currently have a family, definitely do it. If you make it to associate you will be making 300k at least. You don't need to do IB your whole life. Depending on if this is in IB, research, sales and trading etc, you have different routes you could take to consulting, the buy side etc. You are probably going to have to work long hours so you do want a short commute, which means you are not going to have a spacious place. If you live somewhere in midtown it's not as bad as trying to be hip and living in the village. If you stay in NY long term, once the hours settle down, the wise move is to get the frick out of there and move to a suburb.

edit: the site you need to know is streeteasy.com

Voting go conditionally. Basically just needs to be upgrade from what you're currently doing.

Don't try and live paycheck to paycheck and think you need your own apartment. Max out 401K. Being a dramatard you probably won't make the cut when the next financial crisis comes, so set yourself up with money and things that improve your resume.

I made 120k in the Midwest at the beginning of my career.

Way better (even still) to make that in the Midwest than "having to" move to NYC.

Big 4 IB? You mean bulge bracket?

What's your current profile? I'm assuming MBA going in as an analyst/associate (i forget what IB calls their b-word positions). If you know what you're getting into, the answer is obviously yes. If you don't, the answer is probably no.

Got a 1590 in SAT, had my first nervous breakdown, said frick this, went to join special forces, they told me to frick off, went to mm, became a merchant mariner junior officer, left, got an associate's degree from a bumfrick community college, did retail banking and credit disbursement for 1 year, did CFA L1, got into junior analyst role in a small firm, been doing that for the last 2 years.

I'll probably do this finance bullshit for a few more years before I venture into something else.

How does it feel to know you'll always be too fricking stupid to get the last question?

Honestly I think you should go for it, and try to take NY on its own terms. Embrace the bustle and try being less racist. Everyone likes a fun rich banker with great drugs. (I went out with a few)

NYC rocks if you have money dude just do it.

Literally like 99% of the complainers about NYC are poors who have to live in shitty apartments costing half their wages.

You won't be penthouse in Manhattan but you'll afford a nice place with transit access in like Brooklyn, and you'll be in a job where promotions really could afford you lower Manhattan.

Yeah that is my primary concern. Whether living costs are too high.

I don't drink, don't Starbucks, don't vidya, have no intention of splurging money on women via tinder or anything else and I don't go to concerts, I just want to be able to afford a spacious living place.

P.S. - Don't want to live near minorities is also a concern

Better start getting some taste then lol

If you're a racist bro don't move to NYC because you won't like it. The city is like 30% white and that's including Jewish people so if you're some kind of mongoloid WASP you're fricked.

Call them to let them know are turning down the job offer so it can be awarded to a woman of color. Whites are too fragile for NYC, anyway.

It's worth it, with roomates you can live somewhere very cheap especially outside of Manhattan but the former may not be an option for you form the sounds of things.

Make sure you get a place near a subway station to where you would be working.
