Soccer will not get popular because of the type of people who are trying to make it popular :marseyshrug:

Most people watch the sports they played (or got really into) when they were young. The people who care about sports tend to be poorer and/or working class and a lot of the hipster appeal of soccer is that it's not a 'middle state' sport. Why would the people who actually watch sports care about something that actively dislikes them?

That said, there are some good reasons to watch outside of the US :marseyagree:

25% of American children are latinx.

This article reads like the people involved have some weird fetish making people like soccer.

Hip urbanites in Atlanta are obsessed with "Atlanta United" because they feel just like europe. They have a weird outgroup bias and think europe is some enlightened place just like their progressive part of the city.

this is also why soccer will never be big here

american soccer fans don't really care about the sport, they just want to signal that they're above the plebeian sports like football and basketball

the only real soccer fans here are mexicans

Probably. I never asked them if they went on reddit. They buy the stickers to put on their small SUVs and obsess over the new stadium. They're the same people who romanticize anything foreign and lose their shit over a taco:marseymariachi: truck because its "ethnic". They're way too blatant with it so they come off as patronizing.

They've been saying this since... when did Pele join the Cosmos? :marseywait:

I don't want to call Pele in the Cosmos or Messi now "washed up" but going to play in the US is such an admission their career is over I don't see how they are meant to dazzle Americans into loving soccer

But Messi is washed up? He has been he since moved to PSG, that's when he stopped caring. And I don't mean that disrespectfully. He's just not on a level for top European football anymore. Keep in mind that WC level is worse than CL level.

I mean he is 36.

it ebbs and flows. like when david beckham joined the galaxy and each time there's a world cup. I think pickleball has a bigger following in the US.

The Mexicans I knew as kids liked soccer but the ones I know as an adult love the Cowboys as much as any red blooded American :marseygrilling2:

I believe it.

I think the real problem with American soccer is just that it's not well established. It doesn't have the money that euro soccer has, so if you're an actual soccer fan, USA soccer is third rate compared to Euro soccer.

Like I don't think it's even remotely close to having the same kind of fandom as Hockey in America, which is saying quite a bit.

soccer is also boring. it doesn't fit American sentiments. you have a better chance with rugby if you make it flashier

Yeah I'd watch rugby for sure. I think it's actually been gaining traction lately.

Think it would also be cool if hurling happened here too so I could watch that. It seems way cooler than lacrosse. Won't hold my breath though.

lacrosse seems to be relegated to universities and private highschools so theres no way it would ever become popular.

I remember the push to make disc golf popular. :marseylaughwith:

Soccer in the U.S. is played by little boys and teenage lesbians. The first group is getting smaller, the second larger.

I don’t like the MLS structure, promotion/relegation is the law of the land for 99% of leagues for a reason, it’s by far the most entertaining. The club names are really cringe too. Of course I would love if soccer got more popular here, but I haven’t seen many signs of it except for the big cities. I went to Columbus Crews opener this season and it had genuine energy and enthusiasm.

Also not many seem to know who Messi is here, I would say Beckham was definitely more well known among average Americans.

I have hope one day we’ll see soccer enter the American zeitgeist, after all it is objectively the best sporting product to watch once you know what you’re watching.

Tbh the Columbus Crew seems to be one of the few MLS clubs that seem to have a real fanbase and historic, and not some crappy expansion team with a euro name.

The flop thing will never work with non bugman mayos imo. But it likely will be the most popular sport after all of the illegals populate more area.

Football is so huge because it's uniquely American and a way for people to be proud of it. The moment something has international appeal, Americans aren't interested.
