I wore some leggings and a big grey hoodie, with no makeup and a ponytail. I got there first so just sat down and started scrolling on my phone, and I was looking forward to getting to know my date better.
Personally, I wouldn't go to a date in gym clothes unless it's a gym date! If a guy did that I would assume he doesn't put effort in his appearance and therefore would probably not go on a second date. This might be cultural but here gym clothes aren't really appropriate outside of the gym.

Bar dates aren't great because you need to do them at bars you never go to, and you probably don't go there for a reason

I'll take them on walks/hikes or to a climbing gym or something for a first date. Everyone gets looser when they have to move around a bit. I'll do bar dates if we're intending to hop around an area on foot.
I like coffee shop dates when there's already a spark but it's too easy to just miss a connection altogether.
If I need to bail on a date, I'm some degree of honest depending on their personality. Earnest but ugly? Something came up. Boring and ugly? I thought they were hotter from their pics.
