Rdrama's best and worst games of 2022 [official annual thread]

Post your top 2 (or, if you really have to, 3) best games of last year. The only rule is they have to have been released in 2022 (there are actually no rules, I'm not a janny I can't delete your comments). You should also post the worst or most disappointing games of last year, the most overhyped meh games and stuff you didn't play but suspect it might be good.

Top 2:

1 Dwarf Fortress

2 Dwarf Fortress

Most disappointing:

I didn’t play anything else so:marseyshrug:. Maybe Dwarf Fortress because it still needs to some minor tweaks for the UI to make sense.

If it hasn't been out for at least 8 years I won't even think about it :#marseydisagree:

On a serious answer the only new game I played was V Rising. Cool game, but the crafting is so slooooooooooooooooow

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Aside from minecraft crafting in general is obsolete gameplay.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

It can work if the game is built around it, tedious otherwise. Factorio and RimWorld work, Ubisoft's newest trash doesn't.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Tbh RimWorlds crafting is annoying. I hate quality in crafting.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

I pretty much ignore quality, because the game lets you do so for the most part. The important part it does right is getting out of the players way, the "make until you have x" craft order is awesome and helps prevent crafting from being tedious imo.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

With a production specialist you'll be pumping out masterworks quickly but it's also a completely rng based game r-slur, holy frick I hate you people.

The game has a million problems but item quality is not one.

Rimcel.

What do you think the games problems are?

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Depends on which perspective.

Game is very poorly balanced and incredibly exploitable

Techtree is poorly made and make some things like basic guns functionally useless

Incredibly basic economy

Ideologies are poorly implemented

Event generation is so random that no real story exists (suddenly somebody has a child never seen before in an enemy raid and there is literally no interaction to be had aside from a mood penalty if they die)

World interaction is incredibly basic

Even basic kill boxes makes most of the game boring

Been a while since I've played and I'm not very up to the newest problems that the newest dlc surely added nor are all my gripes fresh in my mind but really all parts of the game would benefit from being improved and expanded upon but they've been focusing more on making the pool wider rather than deeper.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

There are a lot of things I enjoy about RimWorld, but after getting into Dwarf Fortress, it really pales in comparison. The graphics make it more accessible than DF, but once you get into DF, it becomes way more satisfying.

Event generation is so random that no real story exists (suddenly somebody has a child never seen before in an enemy raid and there is literally no interaction to be had aside from a mood penalty if they die)

It’s so silly and stupid when you’ve crash landed on a RimWorld, only to have a colonist’s son and brother-in-law show up as some unga bunga tribal. And unless you down them and imprison them, you just have to eat the mood malus.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Yes, if it's a crafting game fine, but outside of that it's a major drag. I just played dying light 2, of course it had to have crafting and it's completely r-slurred. As an example, you have to craft medkits but the game always places all the needed components right next to each other for you to pick up, devs just went "how can we slow down the gameplay with pointless chores?"

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Yeah dying light is a great example of shit crafting mechanics. If the system doesn't influence how the player plays the game, then why have it?

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

the early game crafting is fine, but by the end there were mats that took like 8 minutes each to craft. Even running ten crafting station side by side it still took a considerable amout of time to craft stuff :marseysleep:

Neat concept agreed but not really new, it's just a more polished version of the devs last game, i forget the title. As for fun, the combat really didn't work for me since all the moves just blurred together to the point i just spammed dodge and mashed attacks. I see the potential for high level players but I just didn't care enough to git gud.

Power wash simulator was a lot of fun, I really enjoyed power washing and watching kill tony.

I actually like the new Madden, it doesn't have the franchise features we've been missing since the mid 2000's, but the game play is good.

So

From 2022 releases, I honestly only played GOW Ragnarok, Horizon Forbidden West, and RE8 DLC. So I guess those are my nominees.

Worst release of 2022 is RE:Verse. I never expected it to be good and I was still shocked at its terribleness.

Idk why they try with them multiplayer games no one wants, the only multiplayer in an RE game should be co-op (I unironically love 5)

Civ5 multiplayer was a fun time. A friend of mine wanted a luxury resource from me, but as a joke I countered with an offer for him to just give me all his cities. Apparently there is a glitch where the player modifying the trade deal is allowed to unilaterally accept it instead of sending the proposal back to the original player.

Most disappointing might be Sports Story. I didn't play Elden Ring because I wanted to beat Dark Souls first. I didn't really play many games released this year. I guess Portal RTX is my GOTY.

Least Favorite: Sonic Frontiers :marseysonic:

Mannn whatd they do to Sonic after a 5 year wait I'd expect something at least a little fun, but after playing for 30 minutes :marseywait: it just felt aimless and boring :marseysleep:. And the worst part about it is what everyone thinks about it, they're all like "It's a much needed step in the right direction! :marseysoylentgrin:" but I don't want a "step in the right direction" I just want something that's good!! :marseyraging:

Best: Splatoon 3, Total War: WARHAMMER III (after Immortal Empires released), RimWorld Biotech, Elden Ring, Cult of the Lamb, FAITH, Nobody Saves the World, and The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe.

Worst: Total War: WARHAMMER III (before Immortal Empires released), The Callisto Protocol, Saints Row (the reboot), Ghostwire Tokyo, Warhammer 40,000: Darktide, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, Nintendo Switch Sports, and Mario Strikers: Battle League.

Still haven't played a few games that prob would go on this list, such as XC:3 and Dwarf Fortress.

My absolute favorite was prob Stanley Parable (hot take, I know) and absolute worst has to be Switch Sports (what a huge disappointment).

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

I loved The Stanley Parable when the first remake came out (I also enjoyed the original mod) but now I know what the developers look and sound like and I can't help but see visions of their smarmy faces whenever I hear the dialogue. The Beginner's Guide also sucked a fat one. :derpunimpressed:

I think it's a game that's aged very poorly as the relationship between developer and player has changed significantly. Overall it just feels really pleased with itself.

E: And don't even remind me about Dr. Langeskov or Accounting. Tedious retreads without a speck of the charm of the original.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Oh yeah, Beginner's Guide sucked. The original remake absolutely is a product of it's time and feels like an end cap to a certain way indie devs operated. I felt like Deluxe handled it's existence in about the best way possible, [Spoilers]: by being an absolute piss take of a sequel. The game doesn't even try and hide that the very idea of deluxe is stupid, and manages to not take itself too seriously most of the time. When the game does get serious, it pretty quickly goes back to being a comedy, unlike most indie "art" games that keep hammering home how "serious" the game is. In conclusion: bucket.

Best:

  1. Dwarf Fortress - One true god of colony sims. I loved RimWorld, but I might never go back after DF.

  2. Stellaris - Old, but new DLC dropped and it’s my fave PDX game and I probably spent most my 2022 vidya time playing it.

  3. Dark and Darker Playtest - I legit had such a blast playing this with friends I’d move it up to #1 if it was actually released.

Disappointing:

  1. Victoria 3 - Paradox really really REALLY fricked this one up. It’s somehow jankier than Vic 2. Imo it’s several years away from being good.

  2. Darktide - I just could not get into it like I got into Vermintide 2. It’s just boring in comparison.

Honorable Mentions:

Marauders - Pretty fun Tarkov-like game. Set in a timeline where WW2 kept raging and eventually went to space. It felt like a less sweaty Tarkov.

Warhammer III - I didn’t actually think it was a stellar game, but I had a ton of fun playing an 8 man IE game.

I've been really busy this year and haven't played as much vidya as I wanted. But Expeditions Rome (really the series as a whole) is something I found this year and loved.

Also Factorio. Played it technically Christmas of last year when I had covid and got to ditch the foid and kids for a bit. Amazing game. I think I pumped about 40 hours in over Christmas break.

I also really enjoyed Forgive me Father

Sadly I'ma place dark Tide in the disappointing category. I think it will be really good, and is good as it sits; but I expected it to be a lot better than it was. I figured it'd be way more vermimtide like with maps, stories and characters when it just wasn't. Dragonflight managed to get me to stop playing and I didn't think that would happen.

Warhammer total war 3 was worse than dark Tide. It's a huge step back from 2 and I didn't even get a lot of enjoyment out of it. Which is a huge shame. I took a day off when the first one launched years ago and was hyped for the whole trilogy.

Iron harvest also blew. Shoulda been a return to RTS with a sick theme. Instead it just sucked and mimicked DOW2

Lots of these didn't come out this year. Don't care still my list.

Best:

Stray - 10/10 Meows.

TMNT Shredders Revenge - Flawless tribute/sequel to the old school TMNT arcade games. 6 player couch co-op or with remote play, so only ONE person needs to own the game for 6 to play together, and it runs on a potato.

Worst:

Darktide - Wtf happened fatshark, Vermintide 1/2 were amazing, and then they completely drop the ball w/this garbage.

Diablo Immortal - if you play this you're r-slurred

Postal 4 - I expected bad but this was worse. Thankfully it was redeemed by the retro-style new one, Postal: Brain Damaged
