If you haven't been paying attention to one Ken Levine, he's undergone a quiet chuddening over the years as he became an enlightened centrist type and started liking the tweets of Quillette writers on twitter, joining Razib Khan rooms on Clubhouse, and going on Colin Moriarty's vidya podcast. We saw a trailer for his new game at last night's PlayStation State of Play:
The keen investigators at ResetEra suspect something is up:

I'm finding I get more enjoyment from the reaction to video games than I do from video games themselves.

Does anyone else get irrationally upset when video games or movies do completely the opposite of what you think they're going to do. Like why wasn't the movie Barbie just about Barbie doing fun stuff. It didn't have to be about like stretch marks and being old. All they had to do is make a movie about Ken and Barbie having fun.

I used to but I got over it when I realized this type of media can't help but gimp itself by making it too preachy or contradictory. Like Barbie. Moans about the patriarchy in the real world and how horrible it is compared to Barbieland but at the end of the movie Barbie chooses to go live there anyways, thus undermining the message entirely.

There's no such thing as fun anymore. Everything needs to have a progressive message.

Fun is ironically harder to write than injecting a predictable social message, and also gets less people shilling for you for free.

I don't care if movies have a message, even a movie like Barbie. What sucks is when they beat you over the head with it. Tell the story and let the audience interpret it, don't just have a scene where one character lectures the message at the audience because you're afraid someone might not have gotten the point.
