BioShock creator is making a game about cancel culture. ResetEra reacts.

If you haven't been paying attention to one Ken Levine, he's undergone a quiet chuddening over the years as he became an enlightened centrist type and started liking the tweets of Quillette writers on twitter, joining Razib Khan rooms on Clubhouse, and going on Colin Moriarty's vidya podcast. We saw a trailer for his new game at last night's PlayStation State of Play:

The keen investigators :marseydetective: at ResetEra suspect something is up:

Does anyone else get irrationally upset when video games or movies do completely the opposite of what you think they're going to do. Like why wasn't the movie Barbie just about Barbie doing fun stuff. It didn't have to be about like stretch marks and being old. All they had to do is make a movie about Ken and Barbie having fun.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

I used to but I got over it when I realized this type of media can't help but gimp itself by making it too preachy or contradictory. Like Barbie. Moans about the patriarchy in the real world and how horrible it is compared to Barbieland but at the end of the movie Barbie chooses to go live there anyways, thus undermining the message entirely. :marseywomanmoment2:

Fun is ironically harder to write than injecting a predictable social message, and also gets less people shilling for you for free.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

I don't care if movies have a message, even a movie like Barbie. What sucks is when they beat you over the head with it. Tell the story and let the audience interpret it, don't just have a scene where one character lectures the message at the audience because you're afraid someone might not have gotten the point.

Fun Fact: Ken Levine hosted an open discussion at my small liberal arts college

Everyone's questions fell into either two categories -- "Why No Women/BIPOC Video Games" or "WTF happened to infinite, man?"

After a few years of that, the chuddening was inevitable

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Infinite had so much raw writing and interlocking concepts that it had to be a somewhat coherent idea at some point.

No idea what the frick that coherent idea was, but it had to be something.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

The TL:DR answer he gave was essentially suffering from success

BioShocks success afforded him huge resources and a team size, but he had too many ideas to coherently organize between different departments

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Nothing was confusing it was just r-slurred.

In order for it to make sense within itself you had to abandon the central "time is a flat circle" jacking off point it was trying to make.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

It felt like the writers got bored of the story they were writing and made it something else 4 times. The story makes sense but it has no idea what it wants to be

It also just wasnt very fun

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

I remember when the Twins were introduced 10 minutes in I was like β€œoh Booker is Comstock obvi wow.”

And then the game spends like 30% of its metanarrative spouting off about how there are infinite possibilities and it's too fractal for anything to overlap, and the Twins only overlapped because they wanted to. So Booker/Commie couldn't be the same person statistically because they're opposed to each other.

And then they just did it anyways. :marseyshrug:

The original gameplay teasers for Bioshock:Infinite we so amazing. You can do all this wacky stuff with plasmids and looked like it was going to play very different. The game we got was alright, but I think ended up being a more stripped down version than what the studio initially planned to release. It came out more like a standard shooter of the time, but with a rail riding mechanic. And having someone follow you around and just constantly heal and feed you ammo eliminated a lot of the tension the previous Bioshock games had.

My point is, it could have been a way better game, and i hate change

Jump in the discussion.
