I've spent most of today and yesterday evening playing it, mostly exploring. It's so much better than the base game.
Also the game's getting review-bombed by people seething over getting skill-checked, check the game's steam forums for fresh drama if you're interested link.

what part of the exploration is your favourite, the big empty fields with nothing in it or the big empty copy-pasted ruins with nothing in them?

I think they only introduced the scattree bullshit to have something to put into these vast expanses of nothingness.
Jagged peak, abyssal woods, cerulean/crimson coast, the beginning area, and so on is so fricking empty. Should just admit that open-world is a shit concept for souls games.

almost every game gets worse when you add open world because you just go from a game with x hours of content to a game with x hours of content + y hours of walking over boring nothing to get to the content
and that's the BEST case scenario - usually you end up with less content because time the team could have spent making actual gameplay is wasted making empty fields to pad the game out

Limgrave was literally perfect tho, shit to find everywhere. If the whole game was like Limgrave it's a masterpiece but unfortunately it's not.

Game would have been much better if it ended with Leyndell, and cut everything else or left it as post-game content. It's crazy how bad the fall off after Margit was.
Jump in the discussion.
No email address required.
Do you think they made up to Leyndell, intending it to be the end, then realized the game was too short and panicked?
Jump in the discussion.
No email address required.
I think it was always this ambitious. Fromsoft always overshoots in their games, it's why they're always unfinished towards the end. Sekiro and BB are their only games that don't have a noticeable drop in quality in the final quarter.
Besides, Elden Ring ending at Leyndell would still be Fromsoft's largest game, and a lot longer than most (DS1 is 40 hrs, DS2 is shit, DS3 is 60 hrs, Sekiro and BB are both 30. Elden Ring would be around 60 hours)

The DLC genuinely feels unfinished. Given just how much of a nothingburger that Mesmer was, despite being hyped up as the poster child in all the promos, I get the feeling that there was a significant shift in focus somewhere along the way in development which left a lot of areas being sparsely populated with items or just a bunch of copy-pasted bosses slapped all over the landscapes.

it took them two years to copy paste a chunk of field, open up the paintbrush tool set to "gravestone" and draw randomly all over it, and do ctrl c ctrl v on some existing enemies and bosses including the final boss of the dlc itself

It's really pretty, always something new in the distance that looks interesting and most of the areas I've been to have had things to do. The dungeons, at least the ones I've been too, haven't been copypastes and they all had hidden stuff that I wanted like the one of the catacombs hiding an out of the way lightning miracle.
I wouldn't say it's as dense as I'd like but overall it's a massive upgrade over the base game, especially for boss quality.

Dark Souls 1 is excellent, 2 and 3 were just gilding the lily and weren't great. Sekiro was top notch and definitely worth trying at least. I need to replace my 1070 before I try Elden Ring. It looks pretty slick though.
I would definitely recommend the two games for sure. They're interesting enough to at least be worth an attempt.

Ive thought that elden ring enabled bad players too much, its way too easy to cheese most of the game. This dlc uproar is proving that, too many shitters that never actually had to learn the game

Yeah, which made running through it and replay value nosedive
Elden ring has more BS, but exponentially more cheese to brainlessly negate it. Itt takes all the fun out of r-slur routing if there's no barriers to getting shit.

If you enjoy souls games at all you'll like it. I'm a big souls fan and Elden Ring had me in an almost constant state of "wow look what I found!" and "omg this shitty little crack lead to a huge area and it keeps getting bigger" for a solid 150 hours. Purists may find it mid, Dark Souls 2 was my favorite if that gives you an idea what camp I'm in.

I wish I liked DS2 more because I know it's a good game in its own right, surely a lot better than most games, but it's just so different from my beloved ds1 and 3 I think once I'm done with this DLC I'll give it another shot

2 was built different for sure, I like it because the worlds gave me the most sense of wonder and the main area music is a hum trapped in my head forever. 3/Bloodborne took the movement to the next level and everything before feels bad in comparison.

Its the insane scaling on the DLC. They wanted you to farm the scat tree blessings so they cranked the health and damage on everything up massively. If you farm them out it starts to bring you to a relative parity but until then, you'll be getting killed in 2-3 hits while doing very little damage in turn.
By the time you reach lategame in the DLC you'll have 80% damage resistance and the final boss will still hit you for 1600 damage. If you don't have a ton of blessings by that point, its basically a oneshot on 60 vigour.

It will make replaying it a huge slog too. Give it a month or two for the hype to wear off and people will start to realize just how obnoxious it is as a design choice, especially considering just how far spread out they are across the entire map.

I'd say Bloodborne is easier than DS3 or the DLCS for 1 or 3. Its hard initially cos you have to get used to the new mechanics, but it gives you so many options to control the battle that once you get to grips with it its waaaay easier than even Elden Ring where you literally just have a shitty little slow attack and a trash dodgeroll while every enemy is the Orphan of Kos

Arsey, I hate to break it to you but dark souls "lore" isn't real. Fromsoft leaves it as vague and incomplete as possible so that soultubers can put it together and whichever is the best one gets the jap nod of approval
Jump in the discussion.
No email address required.
yup, every lorebro should have realised when dark souls 3 came out that there was never any lore and the developers don't give even one hundredth of the fricks the lore youtubers do about the story
you thought the "setup" about the exiled son of gwyn was going anywhere or referencing anything in dark souls 1 you can piece together? perhaps some sort of interesting allusion to a mysterious sun-obsessed character the game focuses on massively? no it was nothing to do with anything, he's just some random guy with a dragon.
also there was an additional sister that never got mentioned, she just sits in nowhere with an egg for no reason. also the big ultimate lore is some random girl's uncle fighting you in nowhere for no reason
