Why does VR still not have any amazing high quality games?

The one good exclusive VR title I know of was Half Life Alyx. Since then it has been crickets over there.

VR as a concept has so much potential so why does has it not taken off so far? Especially in terms of worthwhile exclusives of the AAA variety?

At the very least they could try to step up conversion of pc/ps/xbox games to PSVR variants but they don't even do that outside of resident evil games.

VR should be a whole lot bigger than it is today. What is holding it back? The weight of the headset? The price? The image quality and resolution?

Nevermind it's definitely weight. PSVR2 weighs 560 grams.

If they could get VR weight down below 200 grams they have a real chance at selling them in the mass market. No way its happening before that though.

Too gimmicky, like motion controls.

It's a video game control paradigm that's relatively still in its infancy and the market for VR titles is rather minuscule compared with the regular market, at least this is what people funding games cares about. With that underwhelming level of incentive, it's remarkable we even got Alyx.

The Wii had the same hang up when launched, the release of titles that adopted the wiis unique controls and took them to their fullest potential over time had made the persuasive argument that the Wii wasn't a gimmick. Even though it was.

It's one of those scifi concepts that people think would be cool irl but the reality is something else. It's mostly that there's just no good application for it. For work etc, you can buy a monitor for €300 which will be big enough to completely fill your vision. For games, you have the problem of your vision not matching your other senses which makes you wanna vomit. We'll not have true VR until we somehow manage to emulate the effects of movement etc on your other senses which isn't going to be easy.

Full body VR could solve the problem but it is too expensive right now.

I think that part of it is that starting up a VR game requires a commitment to playing VR - you have to put on all the stuff, clear out a play area, etc. whereas with an xbox or playstation you're probably already sitting on the couch and can just grab the controller and go. Same with the computer - you close your last zoom meeting of the day and start up helldivers or whatever.

Another thing is the impressions the first gen of headsets left on the consumers. I had no intention of ever buying a VR headset because I thought you either had to be tethered to your computer the whole time or suffer through whatever the cell phone level gpu in a headset could power. When I found out (thanks to someone on rdrama) that you can wirelessly stream from your computer I bought a headset to try it out and it turns out it works flawlessly and VR is actually really cool.

No Man's Sky is pretty fun in VR.

You're right about the weight though - I can't wear the headset for too long before it starts hurting my face.

I am sure they will get the weight below 500 grams by the time PSVR3 comes out.

Jump in the discussion.

quest 3 is only 515 grams. Weight distribution is more important; I got a battery pack to stick on the back of the head strap and it made it more comfortable even though it doubled the weight.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Why not both?

Average mobile phone is like 200 grams that's why I think that should be the goal for a decent VR headset.

It just doesn't matter that much. As long as the weight is well balanced and the headset isn't levering itself onto your face your eyes will get tired well before your neck/face.

The last big hardware gimmick, motion controls, blew up in everyone's face except Nintendo. Nintendo hasn't tried VR and nobody else wants to take the risk of going all-in on it. AAA games cost hundreds of millions of dollars to make and need millions of sales to make a profit, no company wants to be the first to try. Except Valve, but as far as I know, Half Life Alyx didn't even turn a profit. They should've titled it Half Life 3 imo, would've sold billions. Because there's no standout titles nobody wants to buy VR peripheries and because there's no consumer base nobody wants to make games for them. Also, the big genres right now are battle pass FPS-slop and third person moviegames, neither of which work well in VR.

I really enjoy VR but I usually either lug it out only when friends are over or I am just sitting down at the desk (no controllers). It's really cool, but I can only stand it for 2-3hrs before it's uncomfortable. I kept trying to explain this to """metaverse""" investors but no one wanted to listen to the reality that it's more of an occasional play than an 8hr everyday thing.

What can you play like this? I looked it up a little while ago and didn't find anything good. Or are you just watching videos?

Racing sims, flight sims, etc. By "no controllers" I should've clarified without the VR controllers, not like an Xbox controller or a steering wheel.

Honestly space is the biggest issue. Most people don't have a 10x10 space in their house to dedicate to vidya, other than like the living room. And nobody wants to be the weirdo playing vr in his living room.

In addition to the bulkiness of headsets, making a vr game is exceptionally hard and complicated. I heard testing them is a bit if a nightmare.

What's the demand.

I'm a DINK who plays video games and has plenty of extra money sitting around. Yet, I'm not willing to drop $400 or whatever on a headset that my computer may or may not be able to handle.

That's a good point. VR is a second layer of hardware that requires a first layer of high quality hardware to run in the first place.

Tons of kids play it. It is like any other game console for Gen alpha. They are playing stuff like gorilla tag though.

Jump in the discussion.

Seems like it, and you use the VR controllers to control the gorilla arms and run around. TBH I mostly know about it because of youtube comments. I don't actually own VR. But from both my experience and other people who work with kids, VR is super popular with children right now.
