Dead cat bounce of Concord drama: Supposedly cost $400 million and was internally referred to as "The Future of PlayStation" with Star Wars-like potential

https://x.com/longislandviper/status/1837157796137030141

Someone on /v/ transcribed the podcast and I will take him at his word because I didnt bother listening to it

>Colin Moriarty says that he verified this person worked on Concord and talked with him extensively

>He was shocked to learn that Concord cost $400 million to make

>Concord entered the alpha state in early 2023 before Sony bought them, Sony has been working with the developers since 2020.

>When they hit the alpha state, they have already spent $200 million working on it. Sony spend $200 million extra on it from 2023 onwards.

>The game was in a horrible shape during alpha, Sony felt they had to spend an extra 200 million in order to get the game into a playable state.

>A major expense was needed to outsource the game to other studios to finish building it and fixing it so that it was playable before launch.

>Two major things were not worked on until the last minute. Onboarding, how to get new players in and Monetization, how to get money from the players

>it would cost millions to keep the game going as well

>this is Sony's biggest and most expensive 1st party game in their history, more expensive than Spider-man 2 and TLOU2. They lost all of the money spent.

>They made $1 million gross revenue when the game launched, which was refunded.

>Sony had faith that Concord was the future of PS, it was believed to be a star wars level project where movies, tv shows, comics and toys will be made from it

>code name chaos was it's name in development

>internally you couldnt say anything bad about it due to toxic positivity.

>Herman Hulst was a massive champion of the game and you could not insult his baby.

>Colin Moriarty says that he thought the game would cost $100-200 million but he reconfirms that his source is solid and it actually costs more

>Sony execs believed in the project so much nobody on the ground level could change things. Which is why they bought the team.

>400 million is not included with the costs to buy the team btw.

>this is the biggest lost in PS history

They spent all that money on the game and still couldn't pay their developers a living wage. This is what happens when you don't pay your employees and force them to work inhumane hours. If you make someone work more than 20 hours a week, productivity plummets. This is known, but capitalists refuse to learn. This is why all right wingers are stupid.

Thats simply untrue.

The anime/manga industry underpays and overworks everyone and makes billions and is fueled by angst, alcoholism, depression and passion.

Western game devs were simply not pushed far enough.

Now imagine how much better Anime and Manga would be if the workers owned the means of production and utilized it to create actual meaningful stories instead of bottom of the barrel misogynistic slop whose sole purpose is to exploit women and people of color to maximize capitalist profits to keep the 1% on top and the 99% on the bottom. Actually educate yourself and think critically and rationally about the world around you instead of locking yourself in an incel misanthropic loser worldview. Clean the cheetos off your fingers before you write your angry reply, porkie.

The best manga are those with a strong authorial vision that are allowed to take their time.

The one chapter a week model inevitably leads to uninspired slop as the core concept is good and well thought out but the relentless pace of it all inevitably funnels it into tired tropes with which to milk an audience through the sunk cost fallacy.

Art, be it novels, manga, movies w/e is not meant to be made by corpo commitie. Thats how you get slop.

I think the saddest thing is when one has a good concept but has to follow genre conventions so it ends up mediocre despite the idea since japs are allergic to actual anti-heroes and unlikable protags

Shamo almost did it but the author killed himself halfway through the series

Jump in the discussion.

Interesting, truth be told a problem I find with japs is that if they do give the protagonist some negative traits, they always tend to gloss over them or just make the protagonist a cuck, a simp, or lame in some weird way instead of just playing it straight.

I guess Japanese people either fit the mould or kill themselves...

He's not even wrong though, all the best anime/manga was made by random groups of neurodivergents that wanted to make literally anything that wasn't isekai/romance/teenagerslop

Reminds me of when sonic the hedgehog 2 (genesis) was being made in America and moved sega japan devs into the western offices and the japs all seethed that the western devs went home on the weekends and after the work day was over instead of slaving away 24/7 for their shogunate. :itsoverjapanese: !g*mers

I mean, I was with you until you said four five hour days was the max someone could be productive in a week lol

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

You're right. It should be even lower than that. The less people work, the more that gets done, But in reality, there's no ethical labor under capitalism where workers are forced to work long hard hours while the owners profit by doing nothing.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

In this case, the developers made a predictable income and the owners lost half a billion dollars. That is the trade off being made.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

That's late stage capitalism in full effect. If you exploit your workers, your business is doomed to collapse. Infinite expansion is unsustainable.

It really depends on what you are doing. Mental work seriously declines in quality and productivity after a couple of hours. Simple physical stuff like assembling stuff on a factory line on the other hand you can keep up all day.

More hours equals more productivity

If productivity plummets, look for time-theft allievating measures

Jump in the discussion.

Jump in the discussion.

The eight year dev time is BS. The person said they had the idea for concord 8 years ago, then at some point they founded the studio and began working on it with a handful of people and it has only been in full production for a couple of years.

Sony first party blockbusters (HFW, TLOU2, Spider-Man 2 ignoring the licensing cost) have been fairly consistently around the $200m dev cost mark. There's no way Concord cost twice that much. And if it did Sony would not have charged less than full retail for it. Either that number's made up or it's combined cost of development + an estimate for post launch support for like 5+ years or something.
