Dude me and my friend were giving people the emulator hookup and the whole time they were flipping out "NOOO YOU BETTER NOT GIVE MY PC A VIRUS " Ive gotten like one virus off the internet and ive downloaded so many games off sketch sites. Also you can just use myrient which doesnt have any bs or just get an adblocker.

My friend was like "I downloaded a movie and it turned out to be an .exe do I have a virus now" and I was like nah you're probably good just don't run it obviously

All one has to do is hang around /r/roms for a week to see the room temperature IQs on display. It's like a whole generation of speds raised with smartphones in their hands to whom the answer to everything is download an app, or go on social media and bother ask people about how to do basic shit that they could find in 30 seconds with a search. No one knows how to research anything. Then you combine it with poor attempts at translation and you get lots of topics from jeets and brazilians that end up like:

I don't emulate old games because it takes like 10 minutes to DL the emulator, BIOS and roms, and I've usually satisfied my nostalgia for a game after playing it for 10 minutes and then I'm bored. The time spent setting up the emulator feels kind of wasted after that.

I stopped pirating utility software because I no longer need to, thanks to all the great freeware now available (VLC, Gimp, LibreOffice, Paint.net, XnView, etc).

the younger generation is surprisingly less technically gifted than boomers. they grow up with ipads where all you have to do is open the app store and click install, no thoughts in their head thinking about if a website is legit or fear of viruses. take them to a github repo where they have to compile it themselves and they just shut down. technology becoming easy has unironically been the downfall of the future generations. many cant even spell, relying on voice to text or autocorrect. even something simple like downloading minecraft mods which would get kids actually learning about fake popups and how to use a computer has turned into downloading curseforge and clicking install on a modpack.

I downloaded so really old, unheard of game called Cubivore on my shit laptop and finding a working ROM got me some viruses from some fake ones on "reputable" sites.

If you stick to the more popular ones you are fine but the threat is still there
