DOES RDRAMA HAVE SHIT TASTE?
If you saw the post a couple days ago, the subreddit /r/backloggd was doing their own version of "best x" social media bait posts. Wherein I was immediately disgusted by what I saw. I thought, maybe rDrama could do better. Maybe.
So basically same thing as those r-slurs are doing. Every day one game will be picked by the most updoots and be added to the chart. You can suggest anything from any era, I don't really care. And to throw my own hat in the ring I'll do personal picks along side each day to show that I am superior to not only redditors, but to rdrama users as well. Not much else to say but here we go.
Best Combat Game
Today's pick is for best Combat Game which I guess just means which game has the best combat. Which I guess can include any type of combat system which is far too broad so for my pick I'll just stick to 3-D melee combat systems, but feel free to choose whatever for your suggestions.
Personal pick
For my pick I'm choosing Batman: Arkham City. Which is a bit of a weird choice because if you've played the game you know it's relatively simple and actually kinda easy but I find it very satisfying. The main issue is if you play it just as a button masher, you can still win the game and you could argue that a game that doesn't require you to fully engage with its system is a bad one but at the same time I get why Rocksteady felt the need to lower the skill floor to make it so any shitter could play their game based on a popular IP. If you take the time to engage with the combat system and all the combos, movement, strategies, all while maintaining a combo, the game really opens up. The game very smartly keeps combat dynamic by throwing in enemy variations that can only be dealt with certain combo moves or specific setups can really elevate the combat. Trying to manage which enemies to take out first, needing to build combo to utilize special moves to take them out, strategizing how best to deal with a certain crowd. It really becomes an entirely different game when played that way and continues to be satisfying in a way I haven't really felt from other combat systems. What I think makes it unique to me is that the game doesn't focus on extensive button combos that you need to memorize, it's entirely more about planning and execution and if you zone in you can really get a ton of enjoyment out of the system.

Best combat: Die by the Sword
Innovative combat system with tons of depth.
Quoting wikipedia: "For example, with the keyboard, to perform a slashing attack with the default key combination, a player would press the '4' and '6' keys on the numeric keypad in succession. This will move the weapon from extreme left to right. The '8'-'2' combination will likewise perform a top-down striking motion. "
Also features a limb system that allows you to hack off an orc's leg and he hops around on the remaining one.
ps: the categories are shit, typical redditor slop selection

RATCHET AND CLANK GLADIATOR
The gunplay and movement is perfected with smooth dodging, strafing and weapon swapping. The custom mods for the weapons also adds a layer of complexity to it. The squad characters with you allow for much larger swarms of enemies to go after you too creating a frenetic and tense flow to the combat. You're ALWAYS jumping, twisting, and snapping to the next target. Never stopping your gunfire too. The last sunstantial soundtrack worked on by Dave Bergeaud forces forward an INSANE industrial heavy cascade to the action the entire time you're immersed only adding to the combat.
I can also recommend the Transformers Armada game for PS2. The combat is really fun and the minicons actually serve as different weapons and abilities. The movement is weighty and added a great feeling of power when you smacked a Deception and he bursts apart and little scraps of metal and sparkling energy.

You know I was never huge on Sleeping Dogs. I actually liked the story but the combat always felt very loose and kinda cheap compared to similar systems.

The thing that ruined Sleeping Dogs for me was the driving, it wasn't a huge chunk of the game but it felt like garbage. I got filtered by one driving mission and wound up dropping the game entirely.

The looseness was good tho- the combat models had 'connect points' so that you could hit enemies in different places and in different ways every time you used the same move. You could also connect with multiple enemies with the same combo if they were close enough
Jump in the discussion.
No email address required.
The combat system is very inspired by my pick in Arkham City and I just felt like it did it so much better. There's just a real lack of physicality I feel from sleeping dogs. Sometimes it just feels like punches don't connect satisfyingly enough. And at the end you can see how he snaps to an attack from being too far away. In Arkham City Batman will actually have dynamic animations depending on distance and it really helps make things feel smooth and flow better.

is dogshit, and the categories in your list already prove it. Just about none of them have anything to do with the game part of the game. Absolute nonsense.
there's certainly more games that deserve on this kind of list, let's just Call to Arms : Gates of Heck, or StarCraft 2. But these r-slurred categories only account for reddit and /v/shit

I thought For Honor was actually pretty bad.
I really really really really wanted to like that game (and I did put like 150 hours into it) but I could never get over the combat being so unfulfilling. It always felt like it was missing something. For one thing the game really wanted you to play defense. Dare to throw out an attack? Get parried, idiot. Actual fighting games feel much better to play. Maybe it's cuz traditional fighting games have execution requirements that for honor is missing?
In any case, having to cope with yet another Warden bash into unblockable heavy feint had me seething so hard I almost smashed my TV.
Jump in the discussion.

There's something special in how angry For Honor can make someone. It's like concentrated rage. I think the problem with For Honor is some moves are just too strong and spam can beat out a good player because of the unblockable attacks meaning that a player only needs to frick up once and be punished despite being of higher skill than the offensive player.

That game was almost good but always a little janky. The power creep from characters you have to pay for is what really ruined it.
I always had the most fun with the team vs team mode where you had to capture the points. It was less sweaty and more shitposty than actual dueling
