Nintendo Online used to be free and then they made it a paid "service" which is one of the moments when I was pretty disapointed with Nintendo since, as you said, there's a premium.
Getting nickel and dimed shouldn't be part of a "premium".

Imagine how r-slurred it would be if every PC game launcher made you pay a subscription to play online through their service.

You can still use the Internet with your console without paying. What you're paying for is access to the console maker's online play infrastructure. At a certain point I'm just paying for the virtual console since I don't really play any games online.
