Hard determinism is actually my only real belief. If you believe that every force and piece of matter is measurable and calculable, anything else is impossible.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Not everything is calculable though. If you entangle two photons and measure them a million miles away, one of them will be spin up and the other will be spin down with 50% probability. We have no ability even in principle to predict or calculate which will be which even knowing 100% of the information in the system.

Jump in the discussion.

Them not being calcuable is not the same as them not being deterministic though. We just can't show it.

Jump in the discussion.

I'm going off of what @transmission_enjoyer said: measurable and calculable. If you think determinism can exist without being calculable even in principal, then I'd question what your definition of "determinism" is? I think you run into unresolvable philosophical issues if you say determinism can exist without certainty in outcome.

Even the ones that say they don't believe in it, they all believe that God is omniscient of the past present and future, created each one of us, knew everything we would ever do and if we would end up in heaven or heck, and still chose to make us that way.

So yeah, all Christianity is by necessity determinist.

Nope, because if you subscribe to the classical theistic school of thought (as the overwhelming majority of Christian theologians/philosophers did in the past, and the majority in the present still do), God isn't just a being in the universe, but exists outside of it, and therefore isn't constrained by time and causality. Past, present and future are the same thing for him.

This means that even Aquinas, who argued in favor of the complete foreknowledge of God of all things and predestination, can still be interpreted as a free will libertarian.

I mean he's looking at the universe he created and knew how it would all play out based on how he made it. Those theologians just came up with some wordplay so they can always say "nuh uh, you're wrong, God isn't they way you're describing him because whatever you said doesn't apply to him."

It's more like him existing in the future, the present and the past simultaneously.

Basically, think of it as being fundamentally analogous to time travel.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

I can grasp that but being an omniscient and omnipotent Prime Cause, knowing precisely how your present actions will create future events where your mind exists at the same time, and still having chosen to do things that way, it not only makes everything your fault, but it really doesn't give us much leeway to say that we are truly making choices.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

but it really doesn't give us much leeway to say that we are truly making choices.

As opposed to naturalism plainly stating that everything that has happened and will ever happen is determined by the arbitrary arrangement of matter in the Big Bang and the arbitrary set of physical laws that governs the universe?

If one takes such a reductionist view, then free will doesn't exist in either scenario.

knowing precisely how your present actions will create future events where your mind exists at the same time, and still having chosen to do things that way, it not only makes everything your fault

Your free will is contingent on the set of possibilities that's at your disposal; it isn't completely free, but arguing that because of that it doesn't exist at all is a massive stretch.

You know the vast majority of abortions aren't for what one could call a 'baby', but a collection of cells too small to see. No thoughts, no awareness, no senses.

Very, very, very few people advocate for late term abortions. If a woman aborts a fetus that's of an age where it might be viable, something went extremely wrong and the woman is giving up a baby she really wanted

I'm assuming this is an abortion thing. This verse simply shows that God is omnipresent. He knew us before we were born. If we weren't born, then He wouldn't know us. He knew what was going to happen in their life because He already saw it. This has absolutely nothing to do with ensoulment or personhood.

What's the argument here though? A baby is a fricking dumb useless noisy lump of meat until it's not, so I don't see what there point is.

If it's OK to kill cells it's OK to kill a baby by this logic. Both have the same potential.

Think people just need to be honest and move away from this whole debate around at what point does human life begin nonsense.

Its a balance between the mother's rights and the unborn baby's rights with the two sides disagreeing where that balance lies.

My solution is to provide abortions by way of medically-induced deliveries. If the baby survived, the mother has to keep it. If the baby dies, the abortion was a success. This approach solves all the complexity and should make everyone happy.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

If the baby survived, the mother has to keep it.

But that's not true now. Ignoring abortions entirely, if a woman gets pregnant, carries the pregnancy to term, and gives birth to a healthy child, they're still allowed to just dump them at a safe harbor location and sever all ties.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

What's the argument here though?

I understand your pain. Redditors are too stupid to clarify what they're arguing about, so let's try:

tard1: You know the vast majority of abortions aren't for what one could call a 'baby', but a collection of cells too small to see. No thoughts, no awareness, no senses.

Translation: The definition of a baby involves more than just a thoughtless, unaware, senseless collection of cells. [Implied: there has to be something else to fully constitute a "baby."]

tard2: Very, very, very few people advocate for late term abortions [appeal to majority: most do not support late-term abortions]]

tard2: If a woman aborts a fetus that's of an age where it might be viable, something went extremely wrong and the woman is giving up a baby she really wanted

Translation: I partially agree; however, the viability of the fetus and [somehow] the intense desire of the woman wanting the baby are relevant.

That's it. No, I'm not going to look at the thread for additional context. It's an issue of semantics, mainly revolving around "personhood status." No philosopher has figured that out, so the abortion debate will rage on.

My solution is to provide abortions by way of medically-induced deliveries. If the baby survived, the mother has to keep it. If the baby dies, the abortion was a success. This approach solves all the complexity and should make everyone happy.

The "flip a coin" method is nice, but few will appreciate its ineffectiveness. Yeah, the rights of both parties matter, but again you're begging the question by assuming that the unborn baby is a person with said rights. You want to avoid that semantics issue, but ya can't. No one really can. :marseyshrug:

No one in the abortion debate actually gives a frick about convincing arguments.

It's why no one ever bothers with defining when exactly a fetus becomes a sentient human being: libs might as well say consciousness starts outside of the womb while rightoids pretend a zygote is somehow already a fully-fledged human being.

They're both ridiculous bullshit, and that's the point.

Why do you need to be expressive about this type of thing even? Just explaining your stance on it is enough, the emojis add nothing to these types of discussions. If it was talking about things on a personal level I would get it (Even if it’s too many emojis for my liking, we have descriptive words to express how we feel already), but using them in this manner typically leaves people finding it, well I’m not sure what word is the most fitting but I to take a guess, it comes off patronizing. Some of it might be from how there’s a stereotype around those that use an excessive amount of emojis are high school girls who think it’s cute and trendy (From what I’ve seen with the usage of emojis)

Which then further makes it then come off childish in a sense if we go off that, or even simply annoying. Simply put, the average user on the internet, especially on Reddit, finds this type of usage of emojis unnecessarily excessive and adds absolutely nothing helpful in any capacity

It is common knowledge in the church community that the second any church ignores the word of God in favor of their own political opinion the church quickly grows stagnant, dies spiritually, and then closes as people leave and not enough regulars with a will to donate to the Lord come and fill the void. This is happening a lot recently as more and more churches start viewing LGBT Christians as normal and not brothers and sisters struggling with sexual immorality. Before this it was allowing women in positions of power in the church outside of what the Bible sets as the roles for men and women in the congregation.
