Apparently Jesse had an episode with another guest (not Katie TERFzog) where they talked about Musk, Rotherdam and made some lame jokes and talked about Elon's interest or something. I didn't listen to the episode....

I suspected that the Substack commenters would be more supportive on this episode but there are ~700 comments after a day over there so, uh ...

I'm 25 minutes in and the jokes and accents are unbelievably cringe and borderline un-listenable, aside from the distastefulness of the jokes themselves being about kids getting gang-r*ped. Bad bad bad. I've never posted on this sub as a 2 year subscriber but felt compelled this time.

The first segment of the episode really annoyed me.

Whenever there's an incident or scandal or story that is able to be used by certain Right-leaning parties to advance their narrative, then many on the Left make it their business to minimize, obfuscate, distract, and just generally draw the focus to things other than the core issue in order to lessen the ability of those Right-leaning figures to use this issue to bolster their position. (To be fair, I can believe that this exact dynamic probably plays out exactly the other way too, but being someone who consumes mostly Left-leaning media, I see it on the Left much more often.)

I feel like that's exactly what Jesse was doing throughout this entire segment. Elon is a bad guy. Elon is advancing certain ideas about Muslims (or certain Muslim immigrants) that Jesse disapproves of. Elon is bolstering the far-right! So Jesse is doing his part to show what a jackass and liar Elon is so as to lessen Elon's influence in spreading those ideas. But the story here should not be about Elon, and making it about him is part of that exact reaction described above to draw people's attention away from the much more important parts of it.

I don't dispute that Elon says some dumb, inflammatory, and even possibly untrue, things. And it's fair for everyone, including Jesse, to point those things out. But I think that Jesse's interest in focusing on Elon's missteps is because drawing the focus to Elon's idiocy allows the focus to be taken off of all the things that the horrific grooming gang scandal brings to people's minds: unpleasant truths about Muslim culture, about unfettered immigration, about multiculturalism, about political correctness, about the hypocrisy of many feminists and #MeToo voices, about the fecklessness of trusted authorities in the face of accusations of racism. About the neutrality and truth-seeking of the press. About police collusion. It takes the focus off of so much stuff that the Left prefers people were not paying attention to (well, I'm sure they want people to know about police corruption) because those things weaken the Left. And Jesse, being a reasonable liberal, still believes in a lot of those things, and doesn't want them undermined by the likes of Elon. That's what this piece was all about. That's why it annoyed me. Because Jesse choosing to focus

Jesse has a really unfortunate habit of doing this. See also the Louden Country schools sexual assault story and the Citibike Karen incident. He bends over backwards trying to dismiss the way the right wing will inevitably spin it, rather than admitting the inconvenient facts.

Jesse did cover the Loudon County school assaults and he did a much better job than right wing media (unfortunately), what the heck are you on about

This episode was awful, I'm a >3 year sub and I'm considering unsubbing over it, I'm legit pissed. It's hard to say "well they do good work and have some bad takes" when you know how the take will land based on the subject matter.

Jesse writing this off as "well covered" is bullshit. It was mostly in the British press, and the British press to this day downplays the fact that the vast majority of the offenders here are Pakistani, and repeatedly insists that CSA is a general problem—vs the particular extremes at play here. Also, it's not well reported in the US press. The NYT had five articles on this, all from the early 2010s. Meghan Markle personally has more coverage by the NYT. If the US had a scandal whereby white gangs in Minnesota had preyed on 1000s of Somalian girls, we would quite literally hear about it for the next 100 years. The NYT would have an op-ed about it at least once a year. Saying that this has been litigated is nonsense.

I don't like Elon. I think he's a dork, his company makes crappy cars, and nearly everything he does makes me roll my eyes. That said, I'm grateful that he used his platform to put a giant spotlight on this, and it's extremely frustrating that Jesse used this episode of all things to (a) make some of the shittiest jokes ever on the pod and (b) go full nuance bro on something that doesn't require or even suggest nuance. Had this been about some gender clinic, the tone would've been very different, and that's pretty much all I need to know about this episode.

It's also about the fact that he has rolled into his response lionisation of the white nationalist grifter Stephen Yaxley-Lennon (stage name Tommy Robinson) AND that this is a very disturbing proof-of-concept of his current level of political power. The politically motivated billionaire used his social media network to set the political agenda of a country on the opposite side of the Atlantic. Details of the particular case aside, we should all be quite worried about his ability to do this.

I recommend skipping to the next segment. In the first segment they are talking over each other, using cringey inappropriate accents, and retelling a story I'm sure many people here have heard before. It's not the right kind of story for Jesse and Jeff. The Meta AI segment is much better.

The accents were so goofy! It's not fun to listen to strangers do accents badly. Maybe it's funny to listen to your friends at it but I had to stop listening.

Jesse and Katie typically make terrible jokes about the most appalling things. The Holocaust, genocide, whatever. Sometimes the jokes land; sometimes they don't. In this case, I agree most of it wasn't particularly funny, but I don't think it's any different than their spectacularly dark humor on many other issues. And they weren't actually cracking jokes about kids being r*ped in this case -- if anything, they were commenting about how horrific and serious the topic was, so they felt the need to insert absurdist humor. And even then, there were several moments where Jesse actually stopped, took a moment and said, "And yeah, this is truly awful and very serious..."

That said, obviously if dark humor makes you uncomfortable, you shouldn't necessarily be paying for it. Just like Dave Chappelle humor, it's not for everyone.

I didn't find the segment particularly funny, but at no point did I doubt that they found the actual events to be horrific.

I think a lot of people have latent misogyny due to the society we live in. I haven't come to this conclusion due to solely this episode, it's a vibe I've picked up from listening over the years. Dark humour doesn't make me uncomfortable, but the approach to this topic did ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I created a reddit account just to say I unsubscribed after this episode. And unsubscribed from Jeff's substack. Jesse & Jeff force cringe-inducing unfunny jokes about accents while lightheartedly skipping over details from atrocious r*pe and murder- yikes. I really don't get why people are saying Jesse butchered the Grooming story. And I don't even believe he put forth the opinion you all are crucifying him for having.

As someone who listens to a lot of true crime, I'm pretty familiar with the crimes mentioned in this story. How it came about, what exactly happened, etc. Truly, horrendous shit. Jesse certainly reiterated again and again how awful it was. I didn't hear him try to "explain away" the severity at all. Nor downplay that race was a factor (as liberals try to do), and he even highlighted that left-leaning outlets didn't want to cover this because of the race elements. Prologue:

Before I can talk about Bungie's current bed-pooping I have to give you the context of yesteryear's bed pooping. During the thirdish quarter of 2023 the full weight of Bungie's massive screw up by releasing one of the dumbest, anti-climactic, and poorly written game expansions (even by destiny standards) had been realized. This gave Pete Parsons the CEO of Bungie, you're going to be seeing a lot of seethe surrounding this guy, the justification needed to start layoffs in the company.

On Monday, October 30, Bungie laid off a sizable chunk of its staff in departments including community, QA, audio, and more. According to a report from IGN, Bungie CEO Pete Parsons cited Destiny 2's declining performance in 2023 as a cause. A report from Bloomberg noted that Bungie's upcoming projects were internally delayed as part of the move, with The Final Shape quietly moving to June 2024.

That underline section is going to be important later.

In an internal town hall meeting addressing a Monday round of layoffs that impacted multiple departments, Bungie CEO Pete Parsons allegedly told remaining employees that the company had kept "the right people" to continue work on Destiny 2.

This tone deaf remark caught Pete a lot of flak, as if he would give a shit, and he was criticized for not taking a paycut to prevent the layoffs. He instead chose to purchase 2.4 million worth of Antique cars and offer to show his female employees his collection.

Speaking to multiple current and recently laid off employees, IGN has confirmed reports that Bungie took responsibility for the layoffs, rather than laying them at the feet of parent company Sony. Parsons told employees that the layoffs were largely due to underperformance of Destiny 2 over the last year, as well as lower-than-expected preorders for upcoming expansion The Final Shape.

As it so happens Lightfall was actually Destiny 2's best performing expansion. The newest expansion The Final Shape failed to break the previous expansions poulation record on steam (although that could also be sttributed to the amount of server issues during the release of TFS. Despite this the expansion still technically "underperformed" because bungie had likely over-promised Destiny 2's performance after releasing expansions during the height of the pandemic when everyone was trapped inside playing videogames.

Employees were also told that Destiny 2 player sentiment was at an all-time low. Sources tell IGN that this issue had been flagged to leadership repeatedly for months prior to the layoffs, with employees begging for necessary changes to win players back.

One former Bungie employee recalled that they were repeatedly assured following the 2022 Sony acquisition of Bungie that there would be no layoffs, and cited an item from a Sony quarterly report that claimed $1.2 billion of the $4 billion acquisition was going explicitly toward staff retention. Multiple employees confirmed that money was distributed to employees who were fully vested, with money split into multiple payments over time and varying based on discipline and seniority.

The first round of layoffs targeted those who had stock in the company cutting a lot of senior workers including the lady that designed the flipping Halo logo and Michael Salvatori the composer of pretty much the entirety of the music of the 10 year Destiny Saga ever since they canned Marty O'donnell. Around 100 workers got axed, some very high notoriety, and this isn't even including workers who got shifted into sony positions.

As of writing this 3 days ago another hundred or so Bungie employees had found out they had just been uncerimoniously laid off in the same darn community update that any redditor can read for patch notes. This time the layoffs were centered around shuttering all projects that weren't Destiny or Marathon related. This means those projects that were delayed in the underline section before were all cancelled. This time around a lot of leadership roles had been hit as well. Mark Noseworthy and Luke Smith, two guys known for almost killing the game at least 3 times, and one of which had been with the company since before Reach, had been let go. These guys were responsible for side projects and bringing Destiny into other mediums such as T.V Shows. With them gone there's nothing left in the works besides Marathon.

• 155 moving to Sony

On top of the layoffs the annual plan for the release of Destiny content has been alterd, and the consensus is looking like future releases are not going to live up to the previous standards. In other words this 7 year old game might actually die this time, for real...maybe. Idk tbh.

This leaves Marathon, as the sole entity for Bungie to rest its future on. Bungie has to hope an extraction based looter shooter, a reputably anticasual gaming experience. As well as a hero shooter which have become comically despised by gaymers in the current day (see Concord) will be enough to save them from complete collapse.

This is all that exists of Marathon right now. If I'm not mistaken the studio behind these cgi trailers and cutscenes for Bungie got shutdown too. Little else is even known about this game.

Could be worse though. They could be DICE.

It's been 2 years since Russian retreat from Kherson. There are a lot of "technically" stuff like it wasn't a battle, Wikipedia don't call that event a battle, Russian retreated from Kherson earlier and etc. But if we go very technically we will end up with Ukraine winning 0 battles.

Russian would be able to relatively easy capture Pokrovsk and mirnohrad (combine their population is 160k) since there won't be any danger to get hit from flanks for Russian and after they capture pokrovsk there is nothing on Russia way until Dniper river since Ukrainian didn't build any defensive lines. Why because they are at media war where them building in dnipor region defensive lines will be seen as losing.

They of course love to lie since why would Russian blown up something that they without doubts will capture, they could had destroyed it long time ago but according to Ukrainian statements it happened in last days of that city being under Ukraine

So the main question becomes what's Ukrainian goal in Kursk oblast. As you see in the maps, that place has no named settlements beyond Sudzha.

We heard their goal was to capture NPP, didn't happened.

To trade some soldiers, happened but Russia ended up capturing more Ukrainian soldiers in that Ukraine did and exchanging all their conscripts and now have an no prisoners rule in Kursk. Reason for it that Ukraine wants to trade only their elite soldiers and far rights.

Then other goal was to pull Russian soldiers from Pokrovsk, also didn't happened and it's seems they pulled soldiers from North Korea.

Then to humiliate Putin, that's a childish argument especially when Putin act like the good guy. Ukraine send all their elite stuff to Kursk to capture some 5k people town and ended up losing all its mines in Pokrovsk and from country that export coke/coal to a country that will import it. On top of it giving Putin an example that Ukrainian ain't good guys since they been telling about defensive war and then invade.

Western media in September already told Kursk invasion was a mistake and Ukraine should pull out side they are at hard disadvantage and wasting their best soldiers against Russian cops and soon against NK.

So why they still in Kursk ? Just to save face. Or mb hoping to hold it until Trump will be official president and get some trading chip. But it won't work out especially when Republicans showing sign they want election in Ukraine. Putin also pointed he won't deal with an unelected person.

Zelenskyy is mad at Trump because Zelenskyy won't survive without a war. The peace deal will be for Ukraine worse than one from 2022 and people in Ukraine already questioning why he didn't signed it.

But Trump is saving Ukraine because Ukraine now has no power to stop the grinding and no weapons will do it. Zelenskyy still has one fantasy though, getting nuked since it mb can bring burgers boots to Ukraine.
