In my guide to interesting chicken breeds I got a lot of comments to the effect of "what about x breed?" My intention for the last post was to showcase truly rare breeds, not breeds I can go down to my local farm store and get. I mean some of the breeds on that list only exist in small backwater towns in eastern Europe and have a population of five hundred birds. However I love all chickens and wanted to showcase the average bird you'd find in a normal backyard flock today. I will try my best to cover most of them but there are a lot of chicken breeds out there so I will probably miss a few, especially the birds used for meat production since I have little experience with them.

Australorp

This breed hails from down under and is a prolific egg layer. They're usually all black. I had some Australorp chicks but they got eaten by a snake (a common theme in this post)

Araucana

This is the only truly rare bird on this list. They have funny beards and have no butt. They are known for laying green eggs. The genes that cause assless-ness and beards are lethal so they're kinda hard to breed. This breed is a common scam, often breeders say that the birds they are selling are Araucanas but usually they are hybrid birds. The average backyard chicken owner doesn't know better and ends up with a misconstrued notion as to what an Araucana actually is. That said they are still pretty common. This is Chile's only chicken breed.

Ameraucana/Easter Eggers

These are the hybrid birds often sold as Araucanas. They still lay green eggs but lack the rumpless feature of the Araucana. Their beards are also significantly less pronounced but they still have them. I have a lot of Easter Egger blood in my flock due to Mango the incel chicken being a fakecel and also having a few hens.

Cochin

These birds hail from China and look like they're wearing pants which is fun. They are mainly an exhibition bird but they still can be found in backyard flocks.

Silkie

By far the most requested bird on my other list, silkies are loved by all chicken keepers. Asides from their fluff, silkies also have five toes as opposed to the typical four. They are a very friendly and docile breed which means the other chickens will bully them if you're not careful. They also tend to go broody a lot and are often used as surrogate mothers if you don't feel like hand raising your chicks. I plan on one day getting silkies.

Leghorn

You usually see these in white but they come in other colors too. They are prolific layers and are often used in commercial egg laying operations.

Polish

These chickens are beloved for the large tuft of feathers on their heads. I love seeing images of them wearing headbands and hair ties to help them see.

Orphington

These are the quintessential chicken. They come in many colors but the most common color you see is yellow. They're generally friendly and hardy. My favorite thing about them is that they have the fluffiest butts of all my chickens. They are also pretty good mothers in my experience.

Sussex

These are a british breed that comes in many colors, I keep the speckled variety. They are on the smaller side and tend to get bullied in my flock but will generally let you pick them up if you so wish. They also seem susceptible to curved toes but I may have just gotten unlucky on that front.

Jersey Giants

These tie with the Brahma for largest chickens by mass, They are usually black and well tempered. I want some in the future because I like big chickens.

Rhode Island Red

These were on my last list but they are also a very, very common backyard bird. They're pretty boring to look at but I have a few so I have a soft spot for them.

Plymouth Rock

These are another very common breed. They come in other colors but most of the time you will see them as barred (striped). Its a wonder that they managed to make other colors because the barring gene is so strong that every chicken I've hatched on my farm with a Plymouth Rock mother has looked like a purebred plymouth rock even through the father was something else. I am also particularly fond of this breed.

Wyandotte

The prettiest commonly kept breed. They are all around a good bird for exhibition and laying. I love laced chickens and plan on getting some soon.

Brahma

Another huge breed. These guys also look like they're wearing pants.

Bantam

These aren't really a breed of chicken more so a miniature version of all other breeds. The roosters generally have very upright tail feathers and are very cute. If they wouldn't get bullied by my normal sized chickens I would have a bunch of bantams too. There are a few "true bantams" that have no large version, the one pictured is a Japanese Bantam rooster.

These are all the breeds I found that were noteworthy. There are a few breeds I'm missing like Isa browns but they're not recognized by the poultry breed organizations so they don't count. There are also tons of essentially just fancy mutts out there that hatcheries try to claim are new breeds but they really aren't. !animalposters !effortposters

When I was a wee baby, I did listen to some mando pop because of my elder siblings. Over the many years, mando pop barely progressed in any way. They were still doing the cheesy ballads and somehow Jay Chou is still like the most famous since I was like born.
