So first historical context.

The INC, the current principle opposition party, ruled the country practically opposition less till the 1990s. While a few non INC governments did form in this period and some states slipped permanently from their grasp, there was no national level opposition and none of the fragile coalitions that took power in New Delhi could last their terms out. It built this impressive electoral record with the help, principally, of three communities. The upper castes, most prominent among them the Brahmins, who amount to 10-15% of the total population, the Muslims another 10-15% and the Scheduled Castes, the depressed classes as they were formerly called, another 10-15%. Of course, other communities voted for them too. But these three formed the core of the Congress base. For the first group, it was primarily ideological considerations that motivated support. For the Muslims it was gibs and autonomy in civil affairs. And for the Scheduled Castes it was proportional representation in every facet of the economy(which, being a socialist planned economy was very well suited for such engineering) and gibs.

The remaining 50-60% of the population was composed of a wide variety of castes but predominantly they can be classified as land owning small farmers. In the 90s during a period of political instability they mobilized and extracted affirmative action quotas for themselves, calling themselves the Other Backward Classes, of roughly 25%. Alongside prior quotas of 25% for the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, this took the quota figure to 50%. The Supreme Court would freeze it at this figure.

Today, the upper castes have primarily switched to the BJP, which with a 50-60% chunk of the OBCs has attained the former dominance of the INC electorally despite solid Muslim and Scheduled Caste consolidation behind the Opposition. The Prime Minister himself is an OBC, the President is a ST and the former President was a SC(President is a ceremonial post, so max tokenism). Again, consideration for the upper castes was primarily ideological in this shift-or it has become so at this point even if it started out as simple exasperation at the corruption in the INC.

Now for the present

The leader of the INC recently promised he'd remove the 50% ceiling on affirmative action that was set by the Supreme Court(breached in several states already) if voted to power. He has promised proportional representation for all castes after a caste census. This would put this quota at 75-80% today, meaning 80% of capacity in any university or government positions will be determined by one's birth. The OBCs, as I mentioned before, are about 50% of the population and more or less evenly split. So the logic is sound, if the INC can corner even 60% of the OBC vote with this proposition, combined with the SCs and the Muslims they'll carry the day. To counter this, the PM went up and read out loud a letter by the first Prime Minister, Nehru, in Parliament. He opposes the entire affirmative action system in the letter. Now Nehru was the sort of cuckold that despite having absolute power would still cave to such ridiculous demands and then write letters seething about it like he's just a commoner and not the guy literally responsible for it all, a schizo, but the letter seems to have appealed to a lot of right wingers-the more orthodox chunk online-and the sight of the guy 80-90% of us vote for effectively calling his political opponent one of us as an attack is a bitter pill to swallow even personally. But considering the Opposition wants to increase affirmative action we're left with little choice. Of course no one will care about any of this IRL but online its caused some beautiful seethe and counter seethe and a legion of chuds have suddenly begun to idolize possibly the most turbolib bluepilled westoid wannabe midwit in our history.

A Sanskrit grammatical problem which has perplexed scholars since the 5th Century BC has been solved by a University of Cambridge PhD student.

Rishi Rajpopat, 27, decoded a rule taught by Panini, a master of the ancient Sanskrit language who lived around 2,500 years ago.

Sanskrit is only spoken in India by an estimated 25,000 people out of a population of more than one billion, the university said.

Mr Rajpopat said he had "a eureka moment in Cambridge" after spending nine months "getting nowhere".

"I closed the books for a month and just enjoyed the summer - swimming, cycling, cooking, praying and meditating," he said.

"Then, begrudgingly I went back to work, and, within minutes, as I turned the pages, these patterns starting emerging, and it all started to make sense."

He said he "would spend hours in the library including in the middle of the night", but still needed to work for another two-and-a-half years on the problem.

Sanskrit, although not widely spoken, is the sacred language of Hinduism and has been used in India's science, philosophy, poetry and other secular literature over the centuries.

Panini's grammar, known as the Astadhyayi, relied on a system that functioned like an algorithm to turn the base and suffix of a word into grammatically correct words and sentences.

However, two or more of Panini's rules often apply simultaneously, resulting in conflicts.

Panini taught a "metarule", which is traditionally interpreted by scholars as meaning "in the event of a conflict between two rules of equal strength, the rule that comes later in the grammar's serial order wins".

However, this often led to grammatically incorrect results.

Mr Rajpopat rejected the traditional interpretation of the metarule. Instead, he argued that Panini meant that between rules applicable to the left and right sides of a word respectively, Panini wanted us to choose the rule applicable to the right side.

Employing this interpretation, he found the Panini's "language machine" produced grammatically correct words with almost no exceptions.

"I hope this discovery will infuse students in India with confidence, pride and hope that they too can achieve great things," said Mr Rajpopat, from India.

I am seriously considering moving to India - Udaipur or Goa to be exact - from America. I find life in America to be unbearably empty, meaningless, and driven by such gross consumerism that is downright depressing (of course this exists in India as well) BUT obviously there are major issues in India that are concerning. Number 1 is safety - not just physical safety from male feminists and creeps but also ecological safety - water shortages, heatwaves, food shortages possible. I am no fan of the current government and their persecution of minorities and the complete hijacking of media makes things feel a bit dystopian sometimes. But despite it all I just want to come back to India more than anything.

I also have a son and I do not want him to grow up in America either where there are constant school shootings, lgbt and abortion rights are under attack, white supremacists are rising, mental health of youth is circling the potty. Most Indians that are in America seem to me spiritually depleted and obsessed with money and I am just not able to relate to this whole American dream. I want something more meaningful for my son. And yes before anyone says it, i am aware it was a bad decision to bring him into this fricked up world to begin with. So is India really that bad?
