For those who don't know The Boy and The Heron is the latest Miyazaki film that was released to critical acclaim but tepid audience reaction because it was too "weird". People here are probably aware of the Spiderverse animated flicks but not how massively overrated they're amongst online "cinephiles". Not only does this film have a rabid capeshit fanbase but it has also managed to rope in the wokes and the film twitter/letterboxd crowd (seriously it was the highest ranked film of all time on letterboxd).

Because Miyazaki's film had a lukewarm audience reception it was a genuine surprise it won over Across the Spiderverse. Suffice to say, these nerds are not taking it well . Some of the reactions.

I feel like many (including myself) were already expecting a steep decline from the first one, but $120M domestic? This is like nearing Flash-levels of bombing. Ant Man 3's performance looks more impressive by the day lol

The fact that the low end OW predictions are only $11M higher than Morbius is frightening for the MCU.

For context, at best, the opening weekend numbers are only half of the original Captain Marvel, with the best domestic gross being only a bit more than a third of the original.

Before people fly off the handle and launch themselves into the sun, it's important to remember that it takes a long time to right a ship. Both in terms of quality and box office. The Marvels is suffering at the box office for a variety of reason. Part of that being because the MCU fricked up movies like Ant-Man and Thor. Quality wise, if it sucks, it's something that sucked when it was made like a whole year ago.

I think the MCU is attempting to turn the ship around, but its not going to hit right away. Even when the quality improves (The Marvels genuinely looks decent imo) it will take a while before the box office #'s bounce back.

I don't have anything to talk about other than finishing Masters of the Air. Was pretty kino.

The movie has a $250mil budget and was marketed to heck and back so it's estimated that it needs at least $625mil to break even (probably even more due to marketing). Problem? Asia hates it's guts, Europe is unimpressed, the movie underperforms among whites in America (the main movie going demographic) and the newest Spider-Man cartoon will come out next week. It currently does well in America but there's a good chance that it won't have legs since apparently only blacks are impressed with the black mermaid. And the domestic audience needs to make up for the international one too
