MOSCOW, Sept 27 (Reuters) - Three offshore lines of the Nord Stream gas pipeline system on the bed of the Baltic Sea sustained "unprecedented" damage in one day, Nord Stream AG, the operator of the network, said on Tuesday.

read more Nord Stream AG said it was impossible to estimate when the gas network system's working capability would be restored.

Russia blames faulty equipment at a key compressor station and Western sanctions over Ukraine for its idling.

The project was halted altogether just days before Moscow sent its troops into Ukraine on Feb. 24.

I’d just like to point out that as someone extensive with background in this field, losing 1km of pipeline is something that could realistically be fixed in a couple weeks.

However, the damage that saltwater filling the line will do (there is literally no way to stop it) will be so catastrophic that it’s extremely unlikely this line will ever operate again, even if Gazprom wanted to.

Blowing up your own pipeline to own the yuros is unfathomably based though.

Is there no watertight compartmentalized system to save other parts of the pipeline if there's a leak? Seems like a cheap safety for something this expensive.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

No. There’s almost no way to do it. You can’t just slam a valve shut because of water hammer. There are mainline valves at 10-50mi intervals on transmission pipelines on land, they take 5-10 mins to close. I would imagine for undersea shit they’re hundreds of miles apart. Photos show that it’s still losing gas which means that it’s still being filled with water.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

As someone with expensive experience in the industry (but only above ground transmission lines) I find it hard to believe they don't have remotely actuated valves every 10 or so miles so that the entire pipeline isn't compromised during failure. Even outside of pipeline failure, they would definitely have isolation points so that blowdowns and insitue replacements could be made if needed.

This seems like a more permanent solution to taking out gas service instead of hiding behind a malfunctioning compressor. That could be expedited and delivered asap if needed. Replacing 10 miles of underground pipe and the tie in procedure for the existing lines could take forever.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

It's sort of an issue because obviously having kilometer wide sections of the Baltic venting natural gas is sort of dangerous, and certainly it's not a good thing to have Russia sneaking about in the exclusive economic zones of EU nations, blowing up fricking pipelines, but beyond that, Germany has stockpiled most of what it needs for winter, and it was the only one really using that line as far as I know, others have already been cut off and have secured new gas supplies from elsewhere, or have reserves.

If the US signed off on this or was the one pushing them to do it, it better be layered behind plenty of organizations, agencies, and people because the Baltic Sea is relatively shallow and filled with sensors of all kinds. It's a carefully watched body of water so there are no shortage of ways that evidence can be found.

If it was the US and Germany and/or France caught on, this could be NATO-shattering in terms of significance.

You think any nato 'ally' has the balls to actually accuse USA of doing this publicly? Lmfao.

I just don't see anyone else having military capability to do this covertly, Baltic Sea probably has the most intensive submarine detection infra anywhere in the globe, only one who could pull it off would be the one with control of said infra.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

I never said anything about public accusations.

control of said infra

Multiple countries, including Russia, have lots of eyes on that body of water, not just the US.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

To shatter the alliance it'd have to be public accusations, how else would it be justified to the public?

True but US probably has the best stealth submarines and all three leaks look like they're in Swedish/Danish waters which would be much more closely monitored by NATO than Russia.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

To shatter the alliance it'd have to be public accusations

no

US probably has the best stealth submarines

The US wouldn't use a Virginia, Seawolf, or Los Angeles to do something like this.

they're in Swedish/Danish waters which would be much more closely monitored by NATO than Russia

Ignoring that Sweden didn't join NATO until this year, Russia still has a ton of eyes in the Baltic. Not to mention that the US isn't in a position to control/cover all Swedish or Dutch-controlled monitoring, even with its dominant position in NATO.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

How else would they justify leaving NATO lol? Even assuming they actually have their country's interests at heart and not just personal advancement through licking Atlanticist boots which TBH is the case for most westoid politicians.

Why not?

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Because there's an entire spectrum of signalling and information revelation aside from a giant public announcement? Because it doesn't even need to be public to destroy the inter-agency/military cooperation that comprises NATO? Because an alliance can still exist in name without having any teeth to it (cough cough CSTO)?

Why not?

Why not what? Why wouldn't the US use a fast attack class submarine to do something as unavoidably noisy as sabotage a commercial underwater pipeline in a shallow body of water monitored by multiple countries, including non-NATO ones?

Well, for one, it would be far easier and more expedient for an alphabet soup agency to use a deniable, commercial solution to do the same without exposing major US military assets. That's one of many answers to your stupid question.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Establishments of NATO countries are too interwoven for them to decouple easily. And as for CSTO I think Armenia's case shows quiet clearly how ruthless actual geopolitical logic is no matter what individuals or even populations want. Armenians wanted to former Warsaw Pactmaxx and dump Russia for USA, then they got reality checked by Turks and Azeris pushing their shit in and NATO looking the other way. Russia is effectively the only thing saving them from total destruction right now.

NATOids are in a similar situation, Western Yuros literally have no other option. All the cope about them rebuilding their militaries even after this is just that, cope, you can't make an army out of the absolute pacifist cuckolds that are 99% of their population.

A commercial solution would make loose ends, using a US military asset would reduce chance of news leaking and also signal to 'allies' not to start genuine investigations. And even if Russia does detect it, do you think anyone would believe them if they break the news? Cause again, lol at that.

When you want geopolitical change, you can't just tell people to change, even if you have a lot of power. Large numbers of people have a lot of inertia, and that means they like to keep on doing what they've always done. Instead, you force them to do what you want by artificially constraining their choices. So this makes perfect sense for either the U.S. (forces Europe to tolerate Russian sanctions instead of backing down once their voters start whining about the cold winter) or Russia (gives a plausible excuse to Gazprom to shut down Europe's gas heat during winter without the appearance of reneging on their contractual agreements).

Honestly, I don't know. Somebody sabotaged that line, but we don't have enough information to say whom just yet.
