Techfoid malds when evil men invade her safe space

Angry :marseychonkerfoid: malds all over tech subs about GHC conference having a few men in attendance. She is _really_ mad - 6 posts in the last day across /r/GirlsGoneWired and /r/csmajors.

GHC, the "Grace Hopper Celebration" (maybe don't call it a celebration if you want to be taken seriously) is "is the world's largest gathering of women and non-binary technologists." Our heroine finds it ridiculous that evil men are allowed to attend.

:marseychonkerfoid: I'm seeing entire groups of just men, at a conference that's sole purpose is to give opportunities to WOMEN and non-binary individuals in a male dominated field. I attended last year and did not say any male identitying student attendees. This is genuinely infuriating.

Continues sperging out in the comments -

Men are minorities there aren't they? U gotta be more accepting :marseyxd:

:marseychonkerfoid: Are you stupid ??? The biggest appeal of grace hopper for the actual women / nb there is to be surrounded by other women. Last year, before men fricked that up for us, it was an extremely empowering and wholesome conference. It was the ONLY place we could celebrate women. It was a safe place for us. Men are the reason we needed it. And now you've come there too.

Lmao u have ten other ppl in here trolling why u comin after me? Is it because uk I'm a man and ur discriminating against me based on gender? Considering I work around women that have as much of an impact on me as I them, I'd consider ur scales before pooping all over men. This isn't a woman vs man thing, it's about working in cohesion

:marseychonkerfoid: I'm mad at all of you. Seriously frick all of you. None of you guys that think this shit is funny know what it's like being the only woman in a class of 50 men. None of you know what it's like being talked down to because you are the only women on your engineering team. None of you understand why we have this conference and why this is upsetting.

The tables are turned as :marseychonkerfoid: can identify valid enbys on sight

It says women and non-binary

:marseychonkerfoid: The men I'm complaining about are not non-binary, they have “he/him” as their pronouns. I don't know a single non-binary person that goes by “he/him”. There are some that go by they/them and he/him but never just “he/him.” And for people who are actually part of the 🏳️‍🌈 community, its not very hard to tell. It's of course possible there are non-binary people that happen to look like cis males, however hundreds of people there being nb and coincidentally looking like cis men is statistically extremely unlikely… it's very clear that is not the case.

You just openly admitted you assume peoples sexually by just looking at them... wow

Lots of pooping on OP in this thread, she wants you to know she is very angry

OP is an absolute bigot for assuming that the people posting about it are not non-binary or identifying as women.

Go back to Alabama OP these days everyone can be a women.

:marseychonkerfoid: Lol they put “he/him” as their only pronouns on their name tags and it's definitely possible that there are some non-binary attendees but not 1/3 of the attendees.

There are plenty of nb people that have he/him as their pronouns rather than making their life even harder than it already is maybe try to lift them up.

:marseychonkerfoid: That is true but that is not what is happening here and it is very obvious

Educate yourself, sweaty

Follow up question, do you think that men who attend Grace Hopper are more or less likely to agree with the statement "Women are unfairly given extra employment opportunities in tech," when compared to all men in tech?

Kinda seems like voting with their feet to me.

:marseychonkerfoid: I think they would think that, yes. Because they don't understand the history and personal experience of women in this industry. They don't understand the reason we have this conference / who create it / who it was created for.

You didn't start the conference, you don't run it. Who are you to say who it's for? Seems like they belong there more than you.

:marseychonkerfoid: Try doing some research about the conference and educate yourself.

More bonus :marseytransattentionseeker: drama

I don't go to this, I don't even live on the same continent, but I do wonder how you are telling which people are non-binary and which are men? because I am a masc-presenting non-binary person and worry you might class me as a man if you saw me there.

edit: Really not sure why I am being downvoted. this sub "welcomes contributions from everyone".

Because it seems you're trying to muddy things for who knows why, possibly a distinctly masculine desire to make every conversation about yourself. Non-binary people are rare, rarer than either of the binary sexes. You see a conference "for women" which is populated distinctly by non-women, it does not make any sense to think "ah, non-binary representation!"

why invite non-binary people then?

That is not the issue here, is it? When there's a room full of people of whom 50% are masc presenting, 98% of those will be men not enbies. Whether any one of them specifically could be misgendered as either male or nonbinary is... well, personally unpleasant, statistically unimportant. It's just not likely to be successful enough to invite enough of the masc enbies but bad enough at inviting women to visibly get the ratio of male seeming people to be very high.

Plenty more drama in those threads, and I wouldn't put it past :marseychonkerfoid: to continue madposting about it until the "celebration" is over.

Abstract

Deep-learning language models have shown promise in various biotechnological applications, including protein design and engineering. Here we describe ProGen, a language model that can generate protein sequences with a predictable function across large protein families, akin to generating grammatically and semantically correct natural language sentences on diverse topics. The model was trained on 280 million protein sequences from >19,000 families and is augmented with control tags specifying protein properties. ProGen can be further fine-tuned to curated sequences and tags to improve controllable generation performance of proteins from families with sufficient homologous samples. Artificial proteins fine-tuned to five distinct lysozyme families showed similar catalytic efficiencies as natural lysozymes, with sequence identity to natural proteins as low as 31.4%. ProGen is readily adapted to diverse protein families, as we demonstrate with chorismate mutase and malate dehydrogenase.

The changes have been about more than just broader support for different inputs, outputs and languages, however. Some of the most fundamental concepts in programming language design are deeply colonized. The ideas and the words ‘true' and ‘false', for example, stem from the strict logic of the nineteenth-century mathematician George Boole and discrete mathematics. Ideas such as false don't always translate cleanly to other languages or cultures. Even choosing symbols to represent these concepts risks giving primacy to one culture over another. The selection of symbols with no widely recognized meaning (⊤ and ⊥, from logic) seemed more inclusive, even at the expense of clarity in a particular language.

This reads like a very on-the-nose parody, something like C-plus-Equality.

Kolektiva is an anti-colonial anarchist collective that offers federated social media to anarchist collectives and individuals in the fediverse. For the social movements and liberation!

In mid-May 2023, the home of one of Kolektiva.social's admins was raided, and all their electronics were seized by the FBI. The raid was part of an investigation into a local protest. Kolektiva was neither a subject nor target of this investigation. Today, that admin was charged in relation to their alleged participation in this protest.

Unfortunately, at the time of the raid, our admin was troubleshooting an issue and working with a backup copy of the Kolektiva.social database. This backup, dated from the first week of May 2023, was in an unencrypted state when the raid occurred and it was seized, along with everything else.

The database is the heart of a Mastodon server. A database copy such as the one seized may include any of the following user data, in this case up to date as of early May 2023:

  • User account information like the e-mail address associated with your account, your followers and follows, etc.
  • All your posts: public, unlisted, followers-only, and direct ("DMs").
  • Possibly IP addresses associated with your account - IP addresses on Kolektiva.social are logged for 3 days and then deleted, so IP addresses from any logins in the 3 days prior to the database backup date would be included.
  • A hashed ("encrypted") version of your password.

Rooted in theories of Intersectionality, reparative algorithms name, unmask, and undo allocative and representational harms as they materialize in sociotechnical form. We propose algorithmic reparation as a foundation for building, evaluating, adjusting, and when necessary, omitting and eradicating machine learning systems.

We make this case in the body of the text above, suggesting a move away from fairness, replaced by an anti-oppressive, Intersectional approach. We intend for this approach to guide algorithmic design and to act as an evaluative standard by which existing algorithmic systems are judged, adjusted, and where necessary, omitted or dismantled. Our proposal is thus geared towards building better systems and holding existing ones to account.

I left this open because there's simply no way of not looking suspicious otherwise.

However, as usual, the comments and general lack of knowledge astound me. Heck, I'm surprised at the shear quantity of scathing comments regarding the pricing. Competition exists, just buy a cheaper brand? Watercool is always cheaper and the quality is solid, why just hate on a brand for no reason if you have no intention of buying their product anyway? Either way, regardless of the outcome of all this, very disappointing news, and very disappointing seeing what this sub can be like.

Part 2 Thread: https://old.reddit.com/r/watercooling/comments/1cfeoyg/exposing_corruption_eks_prison_threats_lawsuits/?sort=controversial

Now the :marseyjanny: falls in line

This kind of scandal NEVER ends well in communities as small as these. Larger companies can get away with this kind of shit because most people don't know/care. Spaces as small as watercooling? Word gets around fast because almost everyone is keeping an eye/ear out. A different scandal happened in the home theater space where Lexicon got caught taking cheap products from other companies and slapping their own label on them without changing anything (except the price by a factor of 10x), ruined their reputation permanently and now the brand is essentially dead weight in Harman's lineup. Didn't matter that they had made some of the finest home theater equipment in the past, the brand's reputation was effectively ruined. With the half-assed apology and the fact that EK has already been slipping in terms of quality over the years, I can't see them coming back from this. Will they still be around? Perhaps, but I don't think they'll be nearly as big as they once were in the industry after this and there's no way that whatever crawls out of the ashes is going to be able to offer anything even remotely close to their current catalog. They'll have their loyalists I'm sure but there's no way they'll be able to maintain the brand as it stands.

Now do ya'll remember the LTT Expose he did? yeah the LTTcels haven't stopped coping seething and dilating about it

For some Apple Vision Pro buyers, the honeymoon is already over.

It's no coincidence that there's been an uptick on social media of Vision Pro owners saying they're returning their $3,500 headsets in the past few days. Apple allows you to return any product within 14 days of purchase — and for the first wave of Vision Pro buyers, we're right about at that point.

Comfort is among the most cited reasons for returns. People have said the headset gives them headaches and triggers motion sickness. The weight of the device, and the fact that most of it is front-loaded, has been another complaint. Parker Ortolani, The Verge's product manager, told me that he thought using the device led to a burst blood vessel in his eye. At least one other person noted they had a similar experience with redness. (To be fair, VR headset users have anecdotally reported dry eyes and redness for years.)

“Despite being as magical to use as I'd hoped, it was simply way too uncomfortable to wear even for short periods of time both due to the weight and the strap designs. I wanted to use it, but dreaded putting it on,” says Ortolani, who also posted about returning the device.

“It's just too expensive and unwieldy to even try to get used to the constant headaches and eye strain I was experiencing. I'll be back for the next one.”

This isn't surprising. Every human body is unique, which is a problem when you're scaling wearable production for the mass market. Comfort is inevitably sacrificed — and it affects people disproportionately. With smartwatches, it often boils down to the size and weight of the case compared to your wrist. With smart rings, it's the size of your finger. Many people are unfortunately between sizes or have issues with finger swelling. For smart glasses and headsets, having a low nose bridge can mean the device just slips off your face or fails to adequately block out light.

But the hardware isn't the only issue. Another common complaint is the Vision Pro doesn't offer enough productivity relative to the price. One user noted on Threads that looking at Figma screens made them feel dizzy but that the device also wasn't applicable to their work. Another engineer wrote on the social media platform X that the “coding experience failed to convince [him]” and focusing issues caused headaches.

“If I'm not using this for productivity, and if I don't love it for entertainment, and if there aren't enough games to play on it - I just can't justify keeping it,” one Reddit user wrote.

For Carter Gibson, a senior manager working on community management and moderation at Google, it's the finer details. Things like futzing around with windows and file management are productivity deal-breakers.

“It's difficult to multitask between ‘windows',” Gibson told me in an exchange on Threads. “Several file types simply aren't supported on the Vision Pro. I also can't see how creating a slide in the VP would be less energy than doing so w/ mouse and keyboard — even if does feel like you're in Minority Report.”

It's hard to say how this vocal subset of early adopters will impact the Vision Pro going forward. Many folks who said they'd be returning the device also noted they'd be eager to try a second-gen Vision Pro. Others emphasized that the tech wasn't the issue at hand so much as the lack of a killer app or comfort. It's also hard to say how widespread of a phenomenon this is. While these users are speaking out on social media, we have no idea of the actual return rate — or what Apple's internal expectations for the Vision Pro are.

Can Somebody PLEASE Fix Google Search

Hello Homoweeners

It has come to my attention that Google Search is completely fricking useless in 2023. I am trying to fact-check something I wrote for a web forum and I'm getting absolutely fricking nothing. Five years ago I could google about this niche topic and get good article links, but now it's nothing but useless filler content barely superficially related to what I'm searching. I can no longer pull links to obscure technical documents and hobbyist communities with original research. I'm not having any luck with yandex either, I'm afraid this topic is niche enough that my queries are getting mistranslated.

Should I just learn Russian so I can properly use yandex? The west has fallen, billions must consume SEO slop while the rest of the internet goes unindexed
