Beginning of the semester:

  • Be clear on what you want your students to know and be able to do or demonstrate by the end of the course and why that knowledge is valuable to their lives. (See this resource for assistance in developing learning outcomes for your course.) Help students see that the ways you are assessing their learning are key to understanding what they are gaining from the course and where they may need extra coaching and support. (6)

  • Talk to your students about how relying heavily on this tool may interfere with achieving the learning outcomes you hope they will achieve in this course (e.g., problem solving, developing an authentic writing voice, etc.).

    • In particular, “If you can explain to students the value of writing, and convince them that you are genuinely interested in their ideas, they are less likely to reach for the workaround.” (7)

Google suffered a significant loss Wednesday when a European court denied its appeal of an antitrust decision and issued a fine of 4.1 billion euro ($4.13 billion), a record penalty.

Driving the news: Google had challenged an earlier EU ruling that said it used its Android mobile operating system to stymie rivals, but Europe's second-highest court upheld it.

Why it matters: The hefty fine and ruling is a win for top EU antitrust official Margrethe Vestager, who has aggressively prosecuted Big Tech companies, and could set a precedent for future European antitrust rulings covering tech giants.

What they're saying: "The General Court largely confirms the Commission's decision that Google imposed unlawful restrictions on manufacturers of Android mobile devices and mobile network operators in order to consolidate the dominant position of its search engine," the court said.

  • The court did find in Google's favor on one point regarding revenue-sharing with mobile device makers and carriers and slightly reduced the penalty.

The other side: "We are disappointed that the Court did not annul the decision in full. Android has created more choice for everyone, not less, and supports thousands of successful businesses in Europe and around the world," a Google spokesperson said in a statement.

Flashback: This is Google's third EU antitrust fine. Previously, the search giant was fined in a shopping case and an online advertising case.

The big picture: The company is also facing a slew of antitrust suits and inquiries in the U.S.

What's next: Google can appeal the ruling to the EU Court of Justice, Europe's highest court.

[Rambling about linux] [not even drama] Did you know ubuntu mates BASE install size is 8gb?

Fricking bloat!

I'm trying to find a distro that fits entirely in the 8gb so I can fit it entirely in ram on an old dell I fixed so I can use it as a snappy little streaming box (because I don't have a spare harddrive and am too lazy to buy one).

Ubuntu mate (A supposed "lightweight" distro!) BASE install is much too fat to fit (remember I need to fit the whole OS, all installed programs plus firefox/chrome/MPV into 8gb of ram).

Antix is nice at 750mb, but it doesn't include the display drivers out of the box and doesn't include any easy way to install them (and to boot lshw on my dell returns many weird and some outright wrong infomation)

Neither ubuntu or antix managed wifi drivers, or even to detect the card.

My point is devshits have pissed away 10 years of hardware advancement and could u plz recommend a distro
