This is very painful to watch in current year and should serve as a reminder to us all of how far we've come, but also how we must never give up the fight against bigotry and hatred. It's an old idea that you must do anything from a digital detox to a disconnect altogether and cabin max.

These ideas have merit but fall short in various ways. In my opinion, there is a specific formula that we can all adopt now to ensure brain health for us and our offspring.

I was watching the linked video and it occurred to me, like so many current cultural analyses, that there is a persistent desire to remain plugged into the system. You are free to call it slop, and brainrot, and make fun of the cast of celeb characters. But there is no notion that remaining plugged in is an untenable course of action.

I submit to you that unless you or your kids want to end up like the BATIN' guy from idiocracy, you must NOT by default be connected to any algorithmic media.

This did not used to be the case. But I think we have reached that point where we can clearly say it is no longer safe for our brains to be connected by default.

I say by default because I think it is safe to dip your toes in the slop. There's a huge difference between sampling whats going on and being part of the feed itself.

For example:

DO know what movie you want to watch based on some personal reasoning and watch it on Netflix if it's there.

DO NOT go to Netflix and watch whatever is there to be watched. This is going to addict you and eventually you will be watching complete trash/propaganda and not realize what's happened to you.

DO pop into tiktok and scroll a couple vids and get the heck out.

DO not scroll and participate in tiktok/insta/youtube/facebook short video culture.

It's sad, but you used to be able to safely exist in mainstream culture, but I think that time is done. I think there's a real risk of brain health decline. We will see more and more symptoms that look like dementia in young people.

We laugh about how the brainrot gives us ADD and dopamine addiction. But why is this funny? Someone has to be the first to say "ok let's stop, then."
