Bojack Horseman seems like it was the quintessential millenial show

What do you think of it, years later?

I couldn't finish it, it just seemed like it dragged. With some tighter editing I think I would have finished it but I have no attention span.

I thought it was a good idea to make him say normal words instead of horse noises. It made him more relatable to me, a human guy :marseyfamily:

I actually enjoyed it for a couple of seasons but I couldn't finish it. Basically every episode just turned into: "Oh no, Bojack is so self-destructive and has made bad decisions and his life is so sad as a result and he'll never recover and everything sucks and is bad and sad " and then presented that idea in various slightly amusing ways..

Maybe it got better at some point later on but it wasn't good enough to keep pushing through

Not really, but it was a great premise. There were still some great episodes here and there. His mom's funeral was a great scene on the serious side.

A lot of people here are so scared of being labeled redditors that they won't admit when they enjoy something mainstream. It was a good show and that was a cool episode.

I'm disappointed there wasn't a scene where the deer mom tracks him down and he laughs in her face and says "b-word your whore daughter tried to frick me because I'm rich and famous and then I didn't frick her, get lost you have nothing on me" and then she walks outside and gets hit by a truck

The funny parts were good, but the creators were addicted to the validation and awards they got for the dumb sad shit. Sad melodrama is EASY to write, comedy is hard, but melodrama gets you awards. Over time the show became more and more insufferable as a result.

One big issue was how obviously the writers were projecting their ex boyfriends onto Bojack. Everything he does is bad, he can never have growth, nothing good can ever happen to him. Every new season some absurd bullshit has to happen to remind you you HAVE to hate Bojack and if you like him at all or empathise with him you are wrong and chud and bad. Particularly funny because Diane is one of the worst people in the show but the writers seem oblivious to it (because she's a self-insert) and she never gets the aggressive hate they pile onto Bojack

Mr PB was hot and I'd frick him. I'd frick Bojack too, he's the sort of broken chud I'm horny for

I think by the final season the amount of suffering he has to go through just became comical.

Also the Penny thing was ridiculous and nonsensical. It was dumb enough as it was, but the scene where she sees him again and has a panic attack like she got r*ped is insulting. B-word you hit on a celebrity while you were of legal age and he DIDN'T FRICK YOU. That's the most traumatic memory of your life? That's enough to make you hyperventilate and faint?

Speaking of which, Bojack getting crucified by the media and everyone he knew also reminds me of the whole #MeToo thing. And by that I meant #MeToo is only effective against washed out people with no power like Bojack, while the hippo is still untouched.

I like jewish humor usually but there's one kind i don't like: hollywood reference humor. Where the entire :quote: joke :quote: is that someone in hollywood exists and that we know who these people are and wow isnt that crazy how many D list celebrities there are?

Bojack is full of that nonsense. I havent watched much TV lately but when i do i tend to watch a show to completion once I've invested a few episodes unless it's completely boring and unstimulating. The first season is the worst, and it does get a little better, but basically you suffer through 5.5 seasons of not great comedy; for this you get a payoff of 2 or 3 really good episodes on the back half of the final season. The show is at its best when the show takes a serious tone. But 90% of the show is not that, and a lot of the remaining 10% is too self-pitying to enjoy

Jump in the discussion.

It's geniunely hilarious but the whiny "I hate myself everything sucks" mentality of the writers bleeds through waaaaaaay too much, even for a show about a funny depressed alcoholic. Also Diane ( the ghostwriter) is a legit terrible character yet I don't think the writers intended that.

you're meant to side with her in her relationship but what actually happens with mr pb is

  • she starts fricking him because he's hot and rich

  • she sponges off his money to pay for her to frick around with her fake career, uses his connections to get clients

  • she deliberately tries to frick his career for attention despite him being the only breadwinner

  • she cheats on him

  • she is toxic, cruel, bullying and aggressive to him at every moment of their life

  • he constantly tries to show her he loves her and she attacks him for it

  • she lies to him and pretends to be in africa while living at her side piece's house (also a rich hollywood guy she can sponge off)

  • they finally break up when he tries to give her the library she TOLD HIM SHE ALWAYS WANTED, which is apparently some sort of toxic or evil thing to do

also we're meant to hate her family but they were completely right about her, she was an entitled, stuck-up b-word who clearly had no love or respect for them

Balance between comedy and drama is difficult enough (unless you're Scrubs and the setting itself can just provide le deep serious moment on demand), but in the later seasons, the writers really went off the rails and started hitting you over the head with how bad Bojack is and how he's to blame for everything ever
