Freak capybara attack overturns boat full of :marseybong: divers. Trapped divers scared of water, don't want to dive to escape.

Lucianna was one of the last of 35 survivors to be rescued from the wreck of the Sea Story, an Egyptian dive vessel that sank in the Red Sea on 25 November last year. Up to 11 people died or are still missing, including two Britons, Jenny Cawson and Tarig Sinada from Devon.

At the time, Egyptian authorities attributed the disaster to a huge wave of up to 4m (13ft), but the BBC has spoken to 11 survivors of the Sea Story who have cast doubt on the claim. That has been supported by a leading oceanographer, who told us weather data from the time suggests a wave could not have been responsible, and that a combination of crew error and failings in the boat were the likely cause.

As well as describing the terror of being trapped in a rapidly sinking boat, the survivors accuse the company which ran it, Dive Pro Liveaboard, of several safety failings. They also say the Egyptian authorities were slow to react, something which may have cost lives. We have put questions to Dive Pro Liveaboard - based in Hurghada - and the Egyptian government, but not received any reply.

This, for the first time, is the inside story of how the Sea Story sank, as told by those who made it out alive.

Redditor b-words about NFL charitable donations

Light drama, good mix of commies being smug about charity and normies rightly pointing out that they could have done nothing instead.

Something is better than nothing

the bar is on the floor. maybe it's time we start demanding a little better. :soysmug:

The NFL makes on average 22M per regular season game and 42M per post season game.

They can do better. :soysnoo:

Something is better than nothing.

Bad mentality. Expect more.

Eat the rich.

Get a hobby man

(note that this guy is flaired as a Bears fan while OP is flaired as a Vikings fan)

Watching the bears lose is my hobby, but they aren't playing anymore this year so now what

You could try donating to California wildfires

:marseyxd:

OP keeps sneeding in this chain and then tries to make fun of someone else for being broke while continuing to argue like an 8 year old

https://old.reddit.com/r/nfl/comments/1hz9ulb/nfl_donated_5m_to_wildfire_efforts/m6nyb5h/?context=8

Only Reddit could complain about a $5m donation.

It's the equivalent of having $100 and donating 20 cents. Divide that by 31 owners and it's even more ridiculous. It's 100% fair to point out the greed of the billionaire class. :soyjakanimeglasses:

No it isnt. I hate that logic.

The purchasing power of $5 Mil doesnt change based on the source.

It's a percent. Congrats on falling for this narrative that the billionaire class pays its fair share even though they pay the lowest tax rate of anyone.

Who said anything about fair share? Its a fricking charitable donation. They are not obligated to give anything. $5 Mil still goes a long way to helping people.

They sent thoughts and prayers. What else do you need?

And $5,000,000 :marseysmirk2:

The government's job is to regulate the profits a corporation can retain. It's not the corporation's job to choose to donate when its whole founding was with the intention to make money.

Until we elect leaders who hold billion dollar entities accountable, we can't complain because they don't donate "enough"

We should have voted Bernie.

Yes, we should have, brother.

boomer delusions

one of the difficult things about tech morons is

they think that misinformation is a demand problem

and they are not exactly incorrect because people believe whatever the frick they want to believe.

...

the problem with this line of thinking is pretty specifically that it's an inappropriate application of a mental model. not everything is a market.

Not everything is a market.

see the way these frickers think is heartbreakingly limited. linear. broken.

they believe that people have ideas, transmit ideas. that ideas win in a 'marketplace of ideas.'

these are not wholly incorrect mental models. they just have their limits, and their limits are hit pretty quick.

(these people will also tend to believe that people have or attempt to have logically consistent positions. this is how they get broken when they interact with politics, which is largely a matter of feelings, not logic.)

being by general principle darwinian thinkers, they will also tend to believe that the 'best' ideas win, or that 'winning' defined by 'popularity' is to be assumed to be idk one of those evolutionary fitness things.

so not only are they misapplying economics to ideas and rhetoric and discourse

they're also misapplying evolutionary theory.

It's the sort of confusion that could only exist in a free market neoliberal democracy. Because the authoritarian past isn't very far behind us.

An authoritarian society is one in which you are killed for believing something that the monopoly-of-ideas does not want you to believe. You cannot speak ill against the King or you will simply be killed.

And if the King believes something stupid or wrong, that is enforced on everyone regardless of whether there's 'demand' for it.

The marketplace of ideas, then, rests on a stupid notion: that humans exist in some sort of abstract relation with ideas.

Some ideas come from different places. If we're going to strain this broken metaphor further, let's do it: there are brands of ideas, and state-sponsored brands have a certain power through their official nature.

you should be very, very afraid when an authoritarian tyrant enforces his delusion from an official position

and a lot of these tech bros go "it's a demand problem, these people just want to believe whatever delusions come out of Trump's mouth."

It's just that if Fox News acts and speaks officially, and Trump acts and speaks officially, more people are going to treat whatever blanket lies which emerge as normal.

You don't just give up on a drug distribution network because 'it's a demand problem.' You arrest and prosecute the cartels, you disrupt their leadership. (Of the things the incoming administration might do, breaking the power of the Mexican cartels wouldn't concern me.)

And don't get me wrong, the liberal media has a perilous relationship with truth and facts. Its own biases.

But there's a difference between bias, and outright fabrication.

Trump lost in 2020. That's a fact. It's a fact which the authoritarians are already trying to clamp down on. Telling this truth will become more and more difficult to do.

Because when a King cannot be criticized, the Demand for his misinformation goes way up. An authoritarian tyrant is a monopolist in the marketplace of ideas.

And the same people who decried the 'orwellian' nature of the people who wanted you to use pronouns are suspiciously silent on Trump appointees being unable to speak the truth about Trump's election loss in 2020.

So here we are. Prepare for things to get much, much worse.

We failed. We didn't get the boomers out of power.

The only good boomer is a boomer who leaves public office.

If Trump is made president, our government has no legitimacy anymore, but in that lack of legitimacy there is a power vacuum.

Just because John Roberts said some words doesn't mean Trump is not an oathbreaker. He deserves death, but I would have taken banishment from power.
