Through my research, I have developed a five-star rating system to give each hole a rating on how hateful it is. Let's begin!

⭐1 star: Hate free

This means that there is no hate on the hole and the hole has proper moderation infrastructure to prevent hate from developing. All holes should strive to be here. Unfortunately, there is only one hole at this level.

List of 1 star holes: /h/againsthateholes

⭐⭐2 stars: Potential for future hate

While these holes aren't hateful, they have serious flaws in their moderation infrastructure that could allow hate to proliferate. Moderators of 2 star holes need implement new policies to proactively prevent hate. Otherwise, new moderators may have to be added to pick up the slack.

List of 2 star holes: /h/music, /h/furry, /h/moemorphism, /h/changelog, /h/schizocel, /h/ducks, /h/eevee, /h/space, /h/the_ivory_tower

⭐⭐⭐3 stars: Casual hate

3 star holes allow some casual bigotry to slip by. While the moderators may be trying to prevent hate, their moderation is inadequate. In some cases, moderators of 3 star holes may not be fully up-to-date on the latest alt-right dog whistles and are thus unequipped to deal with them. Most of "point and sneer" harassment culture falls into this category. Moderators of these holes need to be quickly replaced, but if that is not enough, the holes must be banned.

⭐⭐⭐⭐4 stars: Systemic hate

4 star holes typically employ the bare minimum moderation infrastructure against hate. This means that while slurs and open calls to violence are usually disallowed, everything else is fair game. Stuff like racist dogwhistles, blatant misinformation, and misgendering go completely unchallenged by moderation staff. Oftentimes, moderators themselves may be participated in the aforementioned chuddery. These holes are very dangerous because while they are full of hate, they still try to maintain a facade of not being hateful so that they can lure in unsuspecting new members. These holes are usually beyond saving and should be banned, although it is possible in some cases for a change in moderation to fix them.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐5 stars: Blatant hate

I like to call these holes "4 star holes without the mask." These holes make little effort if at all to hide that they are hate holes. There are usually no limits whatsoever to the kind of bigotry that can be found on these holes. These holes have a high risk of inciting or even orchestrating violent offline hate crimes. These holes are completely irredeemable must be shuttered immediately. In addition, it is advisable to suspend all participants of 5 star holes.

While these are the current ratings, they can change over time, so be sure to check back every once and a while. Remember: without proper moderation, it is very easy for a hole to move up the hate scale, so don't get complacent!
