Teleportation Achieved Between Quantum Computers in a World First :shadowchaoscontrol:

https://media.tenor.com/A4usuHWH-TsAAAAx/code-quantum.webp

In a groundbreaking use of teleportation, critical units of a quantum processor have been successfully spread across multiple computers, proving the potential of distributing quantum modules without compromising on their performance.

While the transfer only took place over a space of two meters (about six feet) in an Oxford University laboratory, the leap was more than enough to emphasize the feasibility of scaling quantum technology by teleporting quantum statesΒ across an 'internet' of connected systems.

Teleportation is a quirk of physicsΒ that only makes sense through a quantum lens, where objects exist in a blur of possible characteristics until processes of measurement force them to adopt each state.

By mingling the undecided states of different objects inΒ an act known as entanglement, and then carefully choosing the right kinds of measurements to make on one, it's possible to use the answers to force an entangled object some distance away to adopt (and destroy) the original object's quantum identity.

It might not be the kind of teleportation that would beam passengers through the vacuum of space in a blink, but it's perfect for sharing the blur of information necessary for logical operations in a quantum processor.

"Previous demonstrationsΒ of quantum teleportation have focused on transferring quantum states between physically separated systems,"Β saysΒ lead author Dougal Main, a physicist at Oxford University.

"In our study, we use quantum teleportation to create interactions between these distant systems."

Where classical computers use binary 'on or off' switches to perform strings of computations on bits of information,Β quantum computersΒ use mathematically complex distributions of possibilities known as qubits, typically represented in a simple feature of an uncharged particle such as a charged atom.

To make this process practical, hundreds or even thousands of such particles need to have their yet-to-be-decided states entangled with one another in a restricted fashion, without intrusive objects weaving their own possibilities in and messing up the calculations.

Scaling current technology to this level is complicated by obstacles that requireΒ error-correcting processesΒ orΒ shieldingΒ to preserve the delicate quantum states long enough for them to be measured.

Linking a number of smaller processors across a network to create a kind of quantum supercomputer is another solution. While quantum information can be transmitted in the form of a light wave, the potential for its state to be irreversibly corrupted along the way makes it an impractical option.

Teleportation requires the receipt of measurements the old-fashioned way – through reliable binary data. Once sent, operations at the receiving end can tweak their own entangled particle until it effectively looks like the original.

The all-important quantum blur of the teleported spin state in the Oxford University experiment was an 86 percent match with the original, more than good enough for it to serve as a logic gate for a simple operation known as aΒ Grover's algorithm, which succeeded with 71 percent efficiency across the two quantum processors.

"By interconnecting the modules using photonic links, our system gains valuable flexibility, allowing modules to be upgraded or swapped out without disrupting the entire architecture," saysΒ Main.

Having options for restructuring a quantum network could diversify the applications for such technology, repurposing networks of computers into cowtools that can measure and test physics at its most fundamental level.

This research was published inΒ Nature.

Antiworker asks if he was unreasonably let go; posts explicit list of reasons from his employer

https://preview.redd.it/was-i-unreasonably-let-go-v0-ue65yajntjfe1.jpeg?auto=webp&s=4e624adf5a14341cbee6c766ac517ce1106b9de0

Just received an email from the CEO of the company (not sure if I was supposed to receive this message) that they want to proceed with my termination.

For some context, this is an account management role and I have 4+ years of experience with me being a top seller and performer at the companies I've worked for. The reason I took this role is because I started my own company and wanted something stable in the meantime, and my previous employer lowballed my commission so I left.

I started this new job at the beginning of January and ever since I made a minor mistake in my email, my manager has been micromanaging me about what to say in my emails, how to talk, what time I need to be logged on, and so on. To be honest I've never been micromanaged in this way and it only started happening last week. But I want to know if you guys think this is a valid reason to be let go?

Call center slave self-suck or actually an average Sales r-slur?

:marseysoylentgrin: I'm never going to be strong enough to repel a Nazi, but generalizing here, keep up your health. It is beneficial in so many ways I won't bother to list them. Everyone on reddit hates me because I always bring up cooking your own food, not smoking, not drinking, getting exercise every day, giving up fast food and ultraprocessed stuff. It's all key to keeping your body and teeth healthy over the years.

The effects are cumulative - one day you wake up and you have some godawful chronic disease, or your ticker isn't what it could be, or you need yet another root canal, and you are slowed down and inconvenienced by having to use the medical system all the time, take pills, etc.

Also, get an annual check up if only so you have a record of your own stats. It's actually interesting to compare your numbers year to year.

:marseyauthright: As a nazi myself, this is all really good advice. Regardless of what ideology you have, everyone should abandon unhealthy lifestyles and unhealthy food. Most fast food/door dash and other stuff you get in groceries are deliberately kept unhealthy in order to have a population that can't resist and constantly kept broke and in debt. (not to mention how immoral some of the sources of this food are.) You don't need to be shredded but eating well and working out daily with basic calisthenics goes a long way.

:marseytroll: As someone who's immunocompromised from a COVID vaccine injury, I've learned that sometimes the best choice isn't to fight head-on, but to hide and protect myself. It's a hard reality, but sometimes survival means stepping back, staying safe, and waiting for a time when I'm stronger.

In Harry Potter, Harry and his friends often had to choose between direct confrontation and retreat. Hiding, like when Harry and his allies went into hiding in The Deathly Hallows, was often the wisest choice. It wasn't about surrender, but about preserving their strength for when it was truly needed.

Similarly, Anne Frank showed us the power of survival. She and her family lived in hiding, and though it was painful and isolating, it was their only chance to stay alive. Sometimes, hiding isn't a sign of weakness; it's a strategy to make sure we can continue the fight later.

For me, hiding isn't giving up. It's about protecting my health and holding onto hope for a better, safer future.

:soyjakwow: (OP) this is real and valid, but PLEASE try to avoid citing transphobic authors. Stay safe!

Notes on the Crises | Day Five of the Trump-Musk Treasury Payments Crisis of 2025: Not "Read Only" access anymore

For anyone unfamiliar, the eponymous "crises" in the title are NOT about the evil orange man who is bad - Notes on the Crises is a political economy newsletter started a few years ago by Nathan Tankus to comment on the intersecting global economic disasters triggered by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Nathan is a @TracingWoodgrains style "truth neurodivergent" not a wingcucked political hack. He's just a big giant dork who does things like FOIA request the minutes from all US Federal Reserve Board meetings from 1967-1973

Nathan looks like this, and I would believe almost anything that he writes, because it is backed by powerful neurodivergent spirits.

https://i.rdrama.net/images/1738675390NCetNa1oCGswHw.webp

When he writes about the COBOL code in the treasury department, I'm confident he's talking to beardy old men who write and maintain that code.

I would also like to clarify some confusion on social media. The issue with understanding and grasping a COBOL system is not knowing COBOL, as a programming language, in the abstract. Nor is it, god help me, something that AI can "do" because you fired one of these chatbots up and got some code that could compile when you asked "write me some COBOL code". The issue is understanding the specific physical limitations of the system, the way that it interacts with the "Business Logic" of the code and a million other contextual factors.

There is specific code which tells you where to direct specific payments in specific ways and the structures, and why they are structured the way they are, requires deep contextual knowledge. This is "business logic". The entire issue with COBOL and why it has been such a struggle to maintain it is that COBOL systems (both private and public) developed for decades with very little documentation, have a million different path dependent coding choices. Mar Hicks 2020 article in Logic Magazine "Built to Last" is worth a read on this topic.

This is what I meant yesterday when I referenced that 30 different COBOL systems at Treasury had developed their own "dialects" and they launched Payment Application Modernization (PAM), which among other things, unified them. What they unified was the business logic of those systems (as well as likely other factors, most notably the physical architecture of the systems they ran on). Part of me wishes they didn't modernize with PAM because those 30 different and distinct systems would have been more secure from their infiltration. PAM processed 4.7 trillion dollars of payments in 2024.

It's also true that some similar issues can emerge with other more recent programming languages and the way "business logic" emerges if a mission critical IT system developed using a more recent programming language. But COBOL is unique; after all it's literally "common business-oriented language". So while knowing the COBOL programming language is better than not knowing it, it does not make that much of a difference with these young Musk programmers mucking about.

RTX 5090 Lottery in Japan ends in chaos: buyers climb fence of next-door kindergarten

The situation on RTX 50 launch day looks dire. It seems that the few people who manage to find the cards in stock online will either be powered by fast AI algorithms or simply lucky to be near retailer servers.

We previously reported on the RTX 50 launch day lottery in Japan. The country is known for such draws, which, in order to prevent scalping, give everyone in line an equal chance to purchase limited-supply products. Only those whose tickets are chosen will be allowed to buy the product. While it's hard to call that a win, at least some participants don't leave empty-handed.

According to Japanese media, one of the lotteries at PC Koubou, which started earlier (around 15:00 local time), ended in chaos. People were seen climbing over the fence of a nearby kindergarten, and screams were heard. There's also a photo of a destroyed kingergarten sign (added above). The lottery concluded before many attendees even arrived, leading to frustration and disorder at the venue.

The PC Koubou Parts Hall has started calling for entries for a lottery to purchase the RTX5090, but the situation is currently in chaos.

Angry shouts were heard, and some people even climbed over the fence of the kindergarten next door.

@sarasteam0151 (translation)

Swedish retailer Inet confirms there may not be any RTX 5090 stock at launch. It seems they are waiting for an update from their courier company. Even if any 5090 units arrive, the retailer expects them to sell out immediately. The 5080, on the other hand, should sell "quickly."

According to a Redditor who compiled a list of MicroCenter locations and their expected RTX 5090/5080 stock, only 233 RTX 5090 cards were distributed across all stores in the U.S. Similarly, only 2,393 RTX 5080 models were allocated. This is an extremely low number of cards for launch day, though it's important to note that we cannot verify the accuracy of this list.

https://i.rdrama.net/images/1738312964hhUJRr_Lw4urYw.webp

However, Tustin, California, appears to be one of the few locations where lining up might make sense. The queue is already over 300 people long show messages shared on Reddit, meaning that if the numbers above are correct, the last people in line won't even have a chance to buy a card.

While it's great to see such high demand for new graphics cards, it's difficult to understand why NVIDIA did not prepare a larger stock for launch. The company was not forced to release the cards this early, and there is clearly a significant supply issue. Nothing would have changed if the launch had been delayed by a month, allowing board partners to build inventory. This way, customers wouldn't have to rely on luck, fast reflexes, or being prepared to camp outside stores.
