A Cal Fire captain was found stabbed to death inside of her San Diego County home on Monday and authorities are still searching for the suspect.

Deputies were dispatched to the 20200 block of Rancho Villa Road in Ramona at around 9 p.m. on Monday after learning of an assault that happened in the area, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Office.

Upon arrival, they found the victim suffering from multiple stab wounds, deputies said. Despite attempted life-saving measures the woman was declared dead at the scene.

On Tuesday, the victim was identified by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, as Rebecca Marodi, 49, a 30-year firefighting veteran who was stationed in French Valley just north of Temecula.

Thus far into their investigation, Sheriff's Homicide Unit detectives have yet to identify a suspect or motive in the incident, but they suspect that Marodi "knew the perpetrator and are treating this case as a potential domestic violence incident."

According to Cal Fire officials, Marodi began her firefighting career in 193 as a volunteer firefighter in Moreno Valley. She then served as a seasonal Fire Fighter I from 1994 to 2000 in San Bernardino and Riverside before she was promoted to Fire Fighter II. In 2007, she was promoted to a Fire Apparatus Engineer and to Captain in 2022.

She was previously stationed in Perris, Home Gardens, Indian Wells, Menifee, North Rancho Mirage and Temecula before ending up with French Valley Station 83.

"Beyond her operational assignments, Captain Marodi was deeply involved in Peer Support and Hazmat, always prioritizing the well-being of her colleagues," the Cal Fire statement said. "Her legacy of mentorship, service, and dedication will be felt for years to come. Her passing is a profound loss to her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of working alongside her."

Canada, as it turns out, isn't broken. That was the message coming out of Pierre Poilievre's big rebrand rally, where he tried to reposition himself as a champion of Canada's virtues rather than just another critic of its failures. And while Liberal partisans will look skeptically on this attempted political metamorphosis, the biggest doubters might actually be some of his erstwhile fans: the freedom convoy.

Right out of the gate it clearly is a hit piece on Pierre.

Check the social media accounts of any prominent convoy participant, whether it's Tamara Lich, Pat King, or their dedicated transcriptionists in the alt-press, and their sympathy for Donald Trump and antipathy towards Canada becomes immediately apparent. "Your sudden, newfound, fake patriotism is truly indicative of how stupid you think we are," Lich said. "The entitlement of certain Canadians is humorous," fellow organizer Chris Barber wrote. "If we had leadership in Canada who cared about Canadians like Trump cared about Americans … we wouldn't be in this situation."

That's right: for these folks, public health orders aimed at protecting them and their fellow citizens are a greater threat to their liberty than an American government explicitly threatening their liberty. When he writes about the COBOL code in the treasury department, I'm confident he's talking to beardy old men who write and maintain that code.

I would also like to clarify some confusion on social media. The issue with understanding and grasping a COBOL system is not knowing COBOL, as a programming language, in the abstract. Nor is it, god help me, something that AI can "do" because you fired one of these chatbots up and got some code that could compile when you asked "write me some COBOL code". The issue is understanding the specific physical limitations of the system, the way that it interacts with the "Business Logic" of the code and a million other contextual factors.

There is specific code which tells you where to direct specific payments in specific ways and the structures, and why they are structured the way they are, requires deep contextual knowledge. This is "business logic". The entire issue with COBOL and why it has been such a struggle to maintain it is that COBOL systems (both private and public) developed for decades with very little documentation, have a million different path dependent coding choices. Mar Hicks 2020 article in Logic Magazine "Built to Last" is worth a read on this topic.

This is what I meant yesterday when I referenced that 30 different COBOL systems at Treasury had developed their own "dialects" and they launched Payment Application Modernization (PAM), which among other things, unified them. What they unified was the business logic of those systems (as well as likely other factors, most notably the physical architecture of the systems they ran on). Part of me wishes they didn't modernize with PAM because those 30 different and distinct systems would have been more secure from their infiltration. PAM processed 4.7 trillion dollars of payments in 2024.

It's also true that some similar issues can emerge with other more recent programming languages and the way "business logic" emerges if a mission critical IT system developed using a more recent programming language. But COBOL is unique; after all it's literally "common business-oriented language". So while knowing the COBOL programming language is better than not knowing it, it does not make that much of a difference with these young Musk programmers mucking about.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution laid out some of the findings on Romain's group and their work with a Kremlin-linked official named Aleksandr Viktorovich Ionov in a recent report.

From the AJC:

Romain left the group in 2018 and returned to Atlanta to form the Black Hammer Party, which they used to conduct often outlandish protests around the city, including an anti-vaccine protest outside the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention during the COVID-19 epidemic, and a demonstration with members of the far-right Proud Boys in front of the CNN Center. FBI investigators said Ionov funded a number of Black Hammer activities, including a demonstration at the California headquarters of Meta, the parent company of Facebook, in March 2022 over its policies regarding content about the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The Justice Department said that in addition to protesting Meta on Russia's dime, Romain posted Russian propaganda to social media at Ionov's direction and sought Ionov's input on a news release from their organization that condemned President Joe Biden's support for Ukraine.

The other co-conspirators in this case are expected to be sentenced next week.

I thought it was common among democrats at this point to have the viewpoint of "oh yeah maybe hammering identity politics isn't a great idea", but nearly every segment on NPR is still about identity. Are they just trying to quell actual leftist ideas and make people hate democrats even more?

Freestyle Chess Players Club wanted to call their tournament a "World Championship" too, but FIDE wasn't having it. They told players to sign a waiver to stay cool with FIDE events if they played in Freestyle.

Things got spicy with both sides throwing shade. FIDE's CEO, Emil Sutovsky, said Freestyle Chess was just protecting the elite players. Freestyle Chess hit back, saying FIDE was pressuring players and even called for the FIDE president to step down.

After all the drama, Freestyle Chess agreed to drop "World Championship" from their promo stuff for the next 10 months. This was a move to keep things chill for a bit.
