A Cal Fire captain was found stabbed to death inside of her San Diego County home on Monday and authorities are still searching for the suspect.
Deputies were dispatched to the 20200 block of Rancho Villa Road in Ramona at around 9 p.m. on Monday after learning of an assault that happened in the area, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Office.
Upon arrival, they found the victim suffering from multiple stab wounds, deputies said. Despite attempted life-saving measures the woman was declared dead at the scene.
On Tuesday, the victim was identified by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, as Rebecca Marodi, 49, a 30-year firefighting veteran who was stationed in French Valley just north of Temecula.
Thus far into their investigation, Sheriff's Homicide Unit detectives have yet to identify a suspect or motive in the incident, but they suspect that Marodi "knew the perpetrator and are treating this case as a potential domestic violence incident."
According to Cal Fire officials, Marodi began her firefighting career in 193 as a volunteer firefighter in Moreno Valley. She then served as a seasonal Fire Fighter I from 1994 to 2000 in San Bernardino and Riverside before she was promoted to Fire Fighter II. In 2007, she was promoted to a Fire Apparatus Engineer and to Captain in 2022.
She was previously stationed in Perris, Home Gardens, Indian Wells, Menifee, North Rancho Mirage and Temecula before ending up with French Valley Station 83.
"Beyond her operational assignments, Captain Marodi was deeply involved in Peer Support and Hazmat, always prioritizing the well-being of her colleagues," the Cal Fire statement said. "Her legacy of mentorship, service, and dedication will be felt for years to come. Her passing is a profound loss to her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of working alongside her."
Anyone who knows more is urged to contact SDSO homicide detectives at (858) 285-6330.

I couldn't even tell you the names of any of them. I've never even played as Donkey Kong in Smash or Mario Kart because he's the BIPOC of the Mario universe and sucks.
Carp doesn't want you to know this, but this is what Donkey Kong actually looks like
We should get rid of Donkey Kong December. We should get rid of White Women Wednesdays and just have Wario Wednesdays instead. Look at him

Canada, as it turns out, isn't broken. That was the message coming out of Pierre Poilievre's big rebrand rally, where he tried to reposition himself as a champion of Canada's virtues rather than just another critic of its failures. And while Liberal partisans will look skeptically on this attempted political metamorphosis, the biggest doubters might actually be some of his erstwhile fans: the freedom convoy.
Right out of the gate it clearly is a hit piece on Pierre.
Check the social media accounts of any prominent convoy participant, whether it's Tamara Lich, Pat King, or their dedicated transcriptionists in the alt-press, and their sympathy for Donald Trump and antipathy towards Canada becomes immediately apparent. "Your sudden, newfound, fake patriotism is truly indicative of how stupid you think we are," Lich said. "The entitlement of certain Canadians is humorous," fellow organizer Chris Barber wrote. "If we had leadership in Canada who cared about Canadians like Trump cared about Americans β¦ we wouldn't be in this situation."
Yes the !leafs who like freedom want to be part of a country that unarguably has more rights and freedoms.
They insist the real problem isn't Trump's ongoing threats to our sovereignty but Justin Trudeau's continued existence β and, of course, the injustices and affronts that were inflicted upon them by his government. Rupa Subramanya, one of the most sympathetic chroniclers of the convoy's exploits, suggested that "Canadians have bought into the lie by politicians across the board that Trump wants to annex Canada, when what I believe is that he really wants Canadians to get rid of the Liberal government and have greater economic integration and cooperation with the US."
Trudeau drove the country into the shitter. He is why it sucks here. I don't give a frick about Trump and his "threats", "threats" which amount to "We'll make you a full state and give you all full citizenship in the best country on the gods green earth"
That's right: for these folks, public health orders aimed at protecting them and their fellow citizens are a greater threat to their liberty than an American government explicitly threatening their liberty. Policies like vaccine mandates and mask regulations β most of which, it's worth reiterating, were implemented by provincial governments β are worth resisting, apparently, but unjustified economic warfare is best met with submission and docility.
Yes forcing me to wear a mask that doesn't stop the spread (inb4: well you shoulda worn a kn95! No I don't care they were sold out everywhere and tons of the one in circulation were fake!) and get vaxxed to be able to buy food (This was seriously floated and why I finally gave in, well that and being able to work) is and was a massive threat to my freedom.
Getting to be American is the opposite of a threat to my freedom.
In some respects, the convoy's refusal to join the rest of the country in its fight against Trump's repeated provocations isn't all that surprising.
The convoy is over. It ended years ago. This is some g*mergate in current year shit.
What brought them to Ottawa in 2022 wasn't love of their country but hatred of the government in charge of it
No shit r-slur
hich helps explain the very conspicuous presence of American flags, Trump flags, and even Confederate and Nazi flags. It's why they plotted, at least in the beginning, to overthrow that government. And it's why, in a moment where the country they claim to love is being actively threatened with economic and political subjugation, they're rooting for the person doing the threatening.
I'm getting a stars and bars shirt just to piss off this jslu
They're welcome to believe whatever they want, of course. That's one of the virtues of living in a free and democratic society: you can pretend it's a woke dictatorship if that makes you feel better about your life choices.

For anyone unfamiliar, the eponymous "crises" in the title are NOT about the evil orange man who is bad - Notes on the Crises is a political economy newsletter started a few years ago by Nathan Tankus to comment on the intersecting global economic disasters triggered by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Nathan is a @TracingWoodgrains style "truth neurodivergent" not a wingcucked political hack. He's just a big giant dork who does things like FOIA request the minutes from all US Federal Reserve Board meetings from 1967-1973
Nathan looks like this, and I would believe almost anything that he writes, because it is backed by powerful neurodivergent spirits.
When he writes about the COBOL code in the treasury department, I'm confident he's talking to beardy old men who write and maintain that code.
I would also like to clarify some confusion on social media. The issue with understanding and grasping a COBOL system is not knowing COBOL, as a programming language, in the abstract. Nor is it, god help me, something that AI can "do" because you fired one of these chatbots up and got some code that could compile when you asked "write me some COBOL code". The issue is understanding the specific physical limitations of the system, the way that it interacts with the "Business Logic" of the code and a million other contextual factors.
There is specific code which tells you where to direct specific payments in specific ways and the structures, and why they are structured the way they are, requires deep contextual knowledge. This is "business logic". The entire issue with COBOL and why it has been such a struggle to maintain it is that COBOL systems (both private and public) developed for decades with very little documentation, have a million different path dependent coding choices. Mar Hicks 2020 article in Logic Magazine "Built to Last" is worth a read on this topic.
This is what I meant yesterday when I referenced that 30 different COBOL systems at Treasury had developed their own "dialects" and they launched Payment Application Modernization (PAM), which among other things, unified them. What they unified was the business logic of those systems (as well as likely other factors, most notably the physical architecture of the systems they ran on). Part of me wishes they didn't modernize with PAM because those 30 different and distinct systems would have been more secure from their infiltration. PAM processed 4.7 trillion dollars of payments in 2024.
It's also true that some similar issues can emerge with other more recent programming languages and the way "business logic" emerges if a mission critical IT system developed using a more recent programming language. But COBOL is unique; after all it's literally "common business-oriented language". So while knowing the COBOL programming language is better than not knowing it, it does not make that much of a difference with these young Musk programmers mucking about.

Captain America: Brave New World - 51% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Worse than The Marvels.
There have been 35 MCU films and this one ranks 33rd, ahead of only The Eternals and Ant Man 3.
I thought RT was supposed to be rigged. If so, it looks like Marvel has failed to offer up the appropriate number of child sacrifices, or whatever it costs to get good reviews these days.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution laid out some of the findings on Romain's group and their work with a Kremlin-linked official named Aleksandr Viktorovich Ionov in a recent report.
From the AJC:
Romain left the group in 2018 and returned to Atlanta to form the Black Hammer Party, which they used to conduct often outlandish protests around the city, including an anti-vaccine protest outside the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention during the COVID-19 epidemic, and a demonstration with members of the far-right Proud Boys in front of the CNN Center. FBI investigators said Ionov funded a number of Black Hammer activities, including a demonstration at the California headquarters of Meta, the parent company of Facebook, in March 2022 over its policies regarding content about the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The Justice Department said that in addition to protesting Meta on Russia's dime, Romain posted Russian propaganda to social media at Ionov's direction and sought Ionov's input on a news release from their organization that condemned President Joe Biden's support for Ukraine.
The other co-conspirators in this case are expected to be sentenced next week.
Russian election interference status: defeated!

I thought it was common among democrats at this point to have the viewpoint of "oh yeah maybe hammering identity politics isn't a great idea", but nearly every segment on NPR is still about identity. Are they just trying to quell actual leftist ideas and make people hate democrats even more?

what is freestyle chess?
it is a variant created by the legendary racist bobby fischer where the last rank is shuffled up, tossing the opening prep out of the window.
FIDE, the big boss of chess, thinks they're the only ones who can use "World Championship". Freestyle Chess Players Club wanted to call their tournament a "World Championship" too, but FIDE wasn't having it. They told players to sign a waiver to stay cool with FIDE events if they played in Freestyle.
Things got spicy with both sides throwing shade. FIDE's CEO, Emil Sutovsky, said Freestyle Chess was just protecting the elite players. Freestyle Chess hit back, saying FIDE was pressuring players and even called for the FIDE president to step down.
After all the drama, Freestyle Chess agreed to drop "World Championship" from their promo stuff for the next 10 months. This was a move to keep things chill for a bit.
they are planning tennis like tour and F1 like point system.
the first Grand Slam 2025 Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Weissenhaus is going on rn. semifinals would start from tomorrow. would you like to bet?
tourney drama
magnus initially performed mediocre during the round robin phase, leading to people declaring him washed. currently he's playing games at 98% accuracy while eating fruits (banana)
caruana is rumored to have studied all 960 opening maps and has put the current FIDE world champ Gukesh in his place through straight upperhand matchups
sindarov, the last minute entrant, runner up of the qualifier has been upsetting people left & right. he even chose the tough matchup hikaru (the legendary streamer) for the quarterfinal, shocking everyone. currently playing the tiebreaker
prince ali, the topper of the round robin. current playing vincent (the weakest pick) and is losing lmao. edit: bozo lost
