!oldstrags did you know Metafilter still exists? It does!
Did you know it's a giant circlejerk even more insular than reddit? Of course you did.
(For those who don't know, MeFi is an ancient internet forum that costs $5 to join. It's like SomethingAwful if it were never funny, or rdrama if you losers had jobs and could afford 5 dollars to keep out the thirdies)
Anyway, in 2014 they had a struggle session about thinking the unspeakable wrongs.
Wendy Carlos is a transwoman. Seriously, I mentioned this once and it got instadeleted because WTF? apparently some longstanding flame war of which I wasn't even aware.
I don't know who Wendy Carlos is, but I know that trans women
are
women
. There's no such thing as a "transwoman".
Anyway, after few thousand comments the thread devolves into people getting their fee-fees hurt and demanding apologies
If you want a personal apology for a comment that was not directed at you then you might as well just come out and say so instead of continuing to harp on it despite the fact that sweetkid has explained her reasoning and sincerely apologized to the actual people involved.
Then later on, down the end there's a big argument about whether it's okay to dox a 27 year old dude who really really likes a 17 y/o
This comment does not look to me like an apology or an expression of misunderstanding. It looks to me like an admission he googled the information and intentionally doxxed someone he was characterizing as a "libertarian" and "sexual predator."
So folks are free to read the actual MeTa I am recalling and decide for themselves whether or not I am wildly misremembering anything or mischaracterizing it.
Y'all can't behave!

Refreshers
EmΓlia PΓ©rez
actor ousted as a chudette
called out fentanyl Floyd and Muzzies
I will genuinely never understand what these people see in Emilia Perez, it's shocking how many awards it's winning
Hollywood wants to pat itself on the back for making a movie about a transgender character.
I can find 100s of comments on reddit alone praising the movie before the CHUD reveal
Voting closed prior to the recent drama surrounding Emilia PΓ©rez, so that's something to consider. However, the movie is a piece of trash to begin with and the director is a turd bag to boot
It's so bad. I had unfortunately heard the complaints before I went to watch it, but went in with an open mind. The thing that makes me the angriest is that by all surface metrics I should like a film like this. I have a number of close friends who are trans and who I've been close to during their various transitions. Been a person who was there for them as they dealt with their families falling apart. I'm straight and cis but this is near and dear to me.
But the film is just terrible. I couldn't find any empathy for the characters. Maybe it's the flat acting by some normally amazing people. There's no character building. The songs are also flat, both in expressiveness and tonality. I speak pretty decent Spanish so it wasn't a language barrier. I knew what they were saying for 90% of it and had subtitles for the rest. The melodies, if you can call them that, seem low effort. The lyrics in a few of the songs had me laughing at how inane they were, and I'm not talking about the Thai s*x clinic song that everyone rightfully ridicules. Musicals are known for silly songs but that's on purpose. This is trying to take itself seriously. The cinematography is questionable. I was amazed to see it was nominated for that. It's just uncreative and again, flat. Boring. Not groundbreaking. Not even mildly interesting.
And even with all of that, it could still be salvageable. But you have an old French cis dude writing in Spanish about Mexican trans people?! And then directing it? What is this insanity? I could go on but it's a kick in the face that I (and many others including many in the LGBT+ community) now get to be the buttholes who are saying this apparent masterpiece doesn't deserve any of these nominations. So yeah frick the Academy for their gratuitous self congratulatory bullshit. These are some of the same people who think Roman Polanski did nothing wrong. Frick em.
Emilia still won a lot is interesting. Either votes have been locked for months now or the Hollywood inner circle dont care for the discourse. Wonder how Oscar will do though
I guess the Oscar Jannies LOCKED the thread
Whatever this guy is smoking I will NOT have it
I'm not a fan of the film either, but we just can't ignore that apparently a lot of people see quality in this film and it extends outside the Academy. It's a polarizing movie, with great disparity in the Rotten tomatoes score (72% vs 17% lol) and even though I feel like it's a weird mess, a lot of people find something greatly enjoyable about the film.
For instance, at the Toronto International Film Festival. It has around 480.000 attendees. Regular movie goers. They're not millionaires or Academy members. Of all the films on the program they can vote for the ones they love the most, the People's Choice Award, they voted for Emilia Perez. And it got the runner-up prize there.
The Cannes jury (listed below) awarded it as well, even consisting of J.A. Bayona who speaks Spanish.
- Greta Gerwig, American actress and filmmaker β Jury President
- J. A. Bayona, Spanish filmmaker
- Ebru Ceylan, Turkish actress and screenwriter
- Pierfrancesco Favino, Italian actor and producer
- Lily Gladstone, American actress
- Eva Green, French actress
- Hirokazu Kore-eda, Japanese filmmaker and producer
- Nadine Labaki, Lebanese actress and filmmaker
- Omar Sy, French actor
People keep mentioning the 13 Oscar nominations. Well, it got 15(!) BAFTA nominations. The British Academy consists of over 13000 people.
Denis Villeneuve called it one of the best movies of the year.
"I really loved Jacques Audiard's Emilia Perez. I thought that it was very original and inspiring. Jacques Audiard's movies always give me a boost of energy, he's one of our best filmmakers."
James Cameron loved it.
"What I saw that blew me away was Emilia PΓ©rez. I have seen it three times now. It's just not like any other film that's ever been made, you know? I mean, I think it's bold, it's daring, it's a vision. It's beautifully executed. It's a beautiful piece of filmmaking."
'I Have Seen It 3 Times': James Cameron Gives High Praise to Controversial Netflix Hit
I am equally baffled by it. I can understand some of the praise of it. I gave it a 5/10, but it's nowhere near my top spots in any categories, but we can't just stick to the Reddit sphere and ignore that there is incredible passion for the film.
really neighbor, only now you say this? because of the CHUDening ?
Its winning of Best Foreign Language Film is such an irony when the film has been widely panned for stereotyping Mexico, its actors' poor accents, the inaccurate contexts of its dialogues, and made by a director who doesnt speak the language and apparently said Spanish is a language of poor countries (paraphrased) in an interview.
!kino !chuds if anything Hollywood should start casting redditors

This is going to be a post where the one guy from New Mexico on rDrama gets really mad, like when Texas people get pissy because you added some kidney beans to your chili or whatever. Hey hypothetical future New Mexico angry guy, it's all good, you should be mad. I am literally raping your culture on purpose.
This post is about making something that's relevant to the state of New Mexico where they venerate a specific type of non-spicy pepper called the Hatch Green Chile. New Mexicans have made this product a point of cultural pride for their state and have done a pretty good job of exporting it all over the country during the brief window they're harvested (late August through part of September if you're looking for some). Now I said "non-spicy" but nowadays clever growers have created new varieties that are pretty spicy, although not much more so than a Jalapeno or something similar. If you want your green chile stew to be spicy, you can either look for those hot varieties, or just add some other peppers for heat. Personally, I don't like using the spicy Hatch peppers in this recipe because you need to add a LOT of peppers (like 30 or 40) which can get INSANE if you use the really spicy ones. It's up to you and your colon, though.
If you buy fresh peppers during the harvesting season, the grocery stores will roast them for you on site. Whole Foods likes to do this in some places. Otherwise, somebody in your town will probably get on the bandwagon. They bring a big roaster out in front of the store and sell the peppers by the pound. You'll probably need in the area of 1 - 2 pounds of peppers to make this recipe. If you go nuts for these things and buy a whole 25 pound case, make sure you have a vacuum sealer and a big freezer because these will not stay good in your fridge for more than a week. They're very wet after roasting, so you can only imagine how fast they're going to grow mold.
On to the stew. This recipe is dead simple to make. It's all just prep work. Hope you enjoy cutting things. You'll need:
1 to 2 pounds of pork shoulder, cut into 1 inch cubes (actual size of the cubes is up to what you like to eat, but if you make them too big you'll have to cook everything longer)
1 to 2 pounds of green chiles (I didn't weigh them or count them when I made this last night, but it looked like there were 25 - 35 peppers)
A big russet potato or a couple red potatoes
2 big carrots (not traditional, but my favorite version of this had them so I use them too)
A big white onion
Lots of garlic
Chicken or beef stock
Onion powder, cumin, oregano, black pepper
MSG in the form of Sazon Goya (totally optional)
Plenty of salt
First, you need to process the chiles before cooking them. You need to chop off the seed pod that's on one end and scrape the skins off. The skins aren't exactly inedible, but they have a bad texture that will make you look like an idiot in front of your guests while they try to pretend they don't hate you and your lousy dinner. You don't need to be careful about removing all the seeds, they really won't hurt anything, you just want to remove the seed pod because it's hard as a rock.
You could scrape the skins off the peppers using a fork or a butter knife, but I suggest you use the back of your relatively new, extremely sharp chef's knife. That way, you can talk on the phone with a friend while you're doing it, get distracted while turning the knife over in your hand again and again (using the sharp side to cut out the seed pod and the dull side to scrape, naturally) and then nearly cut the end of your index finger off when you grab and squeeze the sharp side of your knife.
Once you get back from the emergency room, start by browning then removing the pork cubes, then saute the onions, garlic, and chiles a little with the dried spices, before adding back the meat, potatoes, stock and everything else. Cook for about 2 hours (45 min covered and the rest uncovered). If you want to cook longer, don't add the potatoes right away or they'll turn to mush. Add the MSG right at the end or it will lose some of its potency.
Real New Mexican recipes I found online don't have carrots, but the first place I ever had this stuff at was in Provo, Utah (Black Sheep Cafe) and it was so good that I have always tried to imitate it.

I'm astonished support for Nenshi is that high, you'd think the dippers would have figured him out and obviously the rest of AB doesn't know who he is - he's divisive, when he left Calgary as mayor this city was in shambles, he had an approval rating in the 40s and dropping. In his first go he campaigned as a conservative, said all the right things but governed as a high taxing, high spending liberal. When he won his first mayor, from his mother's basement where he lived he said Calgarians weren't racists but when it looked like he was gonna get booted he said Calgarians were racists. He'll say anything to get elected but when in office look out. (6)

Absolutely zero surprise. Smith has tapped into Alberta's 'renegade' mentality made popular by King Ralph which appeals to many. Nenshi should reassess his approach and adopt some of that feisty Albertan spirit. As we've seen, embracing Ottawa is a poor strategy for any Alberta political party. (39)
Also embracing victim culture is not interesting for many Albertans (26)
