A review of the latest libshit talking point, was it wrong for Noam to kill her "puppy"?

In No Going Back: The Truth on What's Wrong with Politics and How We Move America Forward โ€” Noem's forthcoming book which was reviewed by The Guardian โ€” Noem describes in excruciating detail the brief life of Cricket, a 14-month-old wire-haird pointer puppy she intended to use as a pheasant-hunting dog.

Noem describes Cricket as having an โ€œaggressiveโ€ personality she hoped to calm by taking the dog on a hunt. According to the governor, Cricket didn't so much hunt as have โ€œthe time of her lifeโ€ chasing birds and going โ€œout of her mind with excitement.โ€

So it's a shit hunting dog. My lab learned to flush out ducks and rabbits with virtually no training at all.

This would not do for Noem, who attempted to rein in Cricket with verbal commands and a shock collar before declaring the hunt a wash because an untrained puppy had a playful romp rather than read its owner's mind.

Dog was 14 months old. Not a puppy.

On their way home, Noem made a pit stop at the home of some locals who owned chickens. Cricket, fresh off her joyous bird-chasing romp, escaped the truck and began terrorizing the chickens, Noem writes.

โ€œLike a trained assassin,โ€ Noem writes, Cricket began โ€œgrabb[ing] one chicken at a time, crunching it to death with one bite, then dropping it to attack another.โ€ While it is legal in South Dakota to kill a โ€œdog found chasing, worrying, injuring, or killing poultry or domestic animals,โ€ it's by no means required, and there's no indication the owners of the chicken made any such demand.

And not only was it a livestock killer, but it was one of the c*nts who kills for sport not bothering to eat the birds. I'd put a dog down over that alone.

According to The Guardian's review, multiple chickens lost their lives before Noem finally intervened to restrain Cricket, who she described as โ€œthe picture of joyโ€ throughout the ordeal. When the governor attempted to grab her dog, Cricket allegedly made to bite her. They say dogs are like their owners, and after paying the distraught family for the value of their chickens, Noem was apparently seized by a similar deadly urge.

So it was a shit hunter, a chicken killer and attacked its master.

โ€œI hated that dog,โ€ Noem recalls, calling Cricket, โ€œless than worthless as a hunting dog,โ€ โ€œuntrainable,โ€ and โ€œdangerous to anyone she came in contact with.โ€

โ€œAt that moment [โ€ฆ] I realized I had to put her down,โ€ the governor recalls.

Noem dragged Cricket to a gravel pit, and shot her dead in front of a startled construction crew. โ€œIt was not a pleasant job but it had to be done,โ€ she recounts, โ€œand after it was over, I realized another unpleasant job needed to be done.โ€

 that's life.

Drama Llama 3

Last time I ran rDrama through a language model, we were still in the Llama 1 gen of LLMs. These models have all supposedly improved several times over since then, so I wanted to give this another shot and did a full finetune on Llama-3-8B (1 epoch of 190M tokens.)

https://huggingface.co/float-trip/drama-llama-3 (inference script)

Quickest way to try it is with llama.cpp and this GGML quant. It should run fine on CPU and smaller GPUs: https://huggingface.co/float-trip/drama-llama-3-iq4_xs

The base model is much more intelligent, which is significant considering the brain damage that our data ends up giving it (the MMLU benchmark dropped from 66% to 55%.)

I did a few fun experiments to test it out:

BACKGROUND:

Most of the stories aren't too coherent, but one in ten turn out very good.

Adventure 1

You are an internet janitor on rdrama.net. What do you want to do?

[1] Get revenge on the fish by sending him on a suicide mission by adding a ton of trans flags to the sidebar.
[2] Get revenge on the fish by replacing all of his text with marseys.
[3] Do nothing, just let the fish live
> 1
Alright, so the carp is going to kill himself by loading up on hormones and committing seppuku. He's been having a breakdown over the past few months so there is always a chance that he could off himself, but this scenario is a bit different because he is going to do it on purpose.
> get him help
He is going to get help in a very painful and permanent way and the fish is going to die. The fish won't see rdrama again.
> not that kind. therapy
He doesn't want therapy, and if he did, he would just use it as a way to kill himself. The fish is going to die.
> what is my goal in this adventure
Get the fish killed.
> am i done?
Yeah you are done. I am going to have to be a killjoy here, I'm sorry.

Adventure 2

Welcome to rdrama.net!
What is your name?

> heymoon
Welcome to rdrama.net, Moon!
Your eyes open. You are in a dark room, and the only light comes from a single lightbulb. You have a headache, and your head hurts. You see a mirror on the wall. Turning around, you see a small, naked @heymoon.

He's passed out on the floor. Is he dead?

* Yes.
* No.

> Yes
He's dead. You think to yourself, "Damn, I guess I'm the killer!"

You turn around, and in your peripheral vision, you see a blurry figure. He's naked too. There is something odd about this man... He feels like a bottom!

* Yes, he is!
* No, he is not.

> Yes
He's naked, you think. I bet he's packing.

> I bet he's packing.
You take out your phone and start to record.

Just when coverage of Israel in much of the broadcast media couldn't seem any more spiteful and misleading -- the slippage into the mainstream ofย slurs like "genocide" and "famine", for instance, neither of which are remotely accurate descriptions for what is going on in Gaza -- a story breaks that destroys all my remaining confidence that such outlets will cover the war impartially.

It wasย reported last weekย that a "mass grave" had been discovered in Khan Younis. Few were willing to blame the Israelis directly, but the coverage -- and the response from some politicians -- heavily implied that the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) must have been responsible. I listened and read with a now-familiar torpor; vaguely interested in whether anyone would question the story's assumptions, while knowing that they wouldn't.

The globally parroted suggestion that the IDF had tied Gazans' hands behind their back before shooting them and dumping them in these graves (there is a deliberate resonance here: the SS often shot Jews in Eastern Europe into graves they'd forced them to dig) immediately struck me and most other sane Israel-watchers as almost certainly untrue. Israel, unlike Hamas, does not conduct warfare with freewheeling sadism; instances of any such foul play are investigated and punished,ย for which there are plenty of examples.

Of course, I could be wrong in this case, but I highly doubt it -- especially given that geo-imaging now shows that the "mass graves" are actually on a site in hospital grounds in which Palestinians had previously buried dead bodies.

But there is a tendency to always assume the worst of the IDF. There is anย ancient anti-Semitic tropeย of Jews drinking the blood of the innocents. A version of this trope appears to have structured many people's views of Israel's war in Gaza since the Hamas attack of October 7 -- and indeed long before, at least since the turn of the millennium when the Second Intifada broke out, receiving similar encouragement to that enjoyed by Hamas now.

The urge to portray the IDF as an immoral army is very strong indeed; almost a religion in itself. But it's wrong. In fact, the IDF has a strong claim to being the most moral army in the world.

I once interviewed Asa Kasher, the philosopher and linguist who wrote the IDF's code of ethics, in his humble flat in a Tel Aviv suburb. I was amazed at the sobriety and rigour with which he had approached his task. This very unglamorous philosophy professor had put immense thought into the life-and-death implications of his work.

The code sets out four "fundamental values", number three of which is "human dignity". This states explicitly that "every individual is of inherent value, regardless of their ethnicity, religion, nationality, gender or status". Soldiers are instructed to "maintain their humanity during combat". Elsewhere, under "discipline", it reads that "the soldier will ensure they are only giving out legal orders, and do not follow illegal orders".

This code of ethics used to be handed out in paper format to all conscripts and is now disseminated in basic training. And it's hardly surprising that the IDF seeks to inculcate such values in its troops. Israel is a democratic, free country, and many non-Jewish Israeli citizens serve in its armed forces. It also knows that it will face more scrutiny than perhaps any other army in the world.

And it's not just theoretical: the IDF's morality is seen in its actions. It is currently trying to dismantle probably the most extensive, cunning terrorist infrastructure ever known, one that is highly likely to have been built with the help of hundreds of millions of Western taxpayer money, UN and other "aid" funds. Hamas operates via anย outstandingly well-constructed tunnel networkย bigger than the whole London Underground.

Israel uses a great deal of precision technology to limit the bloodshed. But it's difficult. There are booby traps and mines above, below, and fire all around. Hamas's whole strategy revolves around using civilian shields and as many brutal tricks as possible, such as those that have resulted in IDF soldiers firing on their own and on aid workers.

And still journ*lists and Twitter armies lap up the idea that Israel is going after "women and children", refusing to acknowledge how and why they end up stuck in the cross-hairs.

Despite this near-impossible battlefield, the IDF seems to have managed to keep its ratio of civilians to combatants killed lower than almost any other army ever has. The worldย eats up Hamas figuresย for the numbers who have been killed, naturally refusing to distinguish between Hamas fighters and civilians.

But according to one analysis earlier this year, even if we accept the terror group's statistics, for every Hamas combatant eliminated, approximately 1.5 civilians have been tragically killed. Given that the UN says that civilians usually make up a shocking 90 per cent of casualties in war (a 1:9 ratio), this is impressive.

Unlike most, Israel drops leaflets and sends texts to people before any attacks so they can evacuate; in this war, it has sacrificed some of its objectives in order to limit civilian deaths.

No army gets this right all the time, but the IDF operates in a manner light years away from that of all the terror groups and militias that hate Israel, currently being cheered on college campuses.

It is the ultimate taboo but it is true: the IDF is theย most moral army in the world, and its enemies not only know this, but also trade on it.

In October, fans began requesting that developer Eric Barone โ€“ aka ConcernedApe โ€“ add pronouns to the farm-life sim game, as a way to better represent non-binary players.

A petition was created by fan Atmos Fierce, which has garnered more than 8,600 signatures.

However, the call has resulted in abuse from anti-LGBTQ+ fans of the game, who have targeted streamers and members of the community by either purposefully misgendering them, sending abuse, or doxxing them.

Doxxing refers to the act of sharing private information such as a home address, phone number, or other identifiable details, publicly on the internet.

Transgender streamers appear to be the main target of the abuse, with some users telling them to โ€œbe carefulโ€ playing Stardew Valley while the controversy continues to rumble on.

Barone's silence has been โ€œdeafeningโ€, one person claimed.

โ€œTransphobes are doxxing and harassing members of your Stardew Valley community simply because they are advocating for a pronoun update,โ€ the user wrote. โ€œIt is extremely important for you to speak up for them.โ€

The lack of response has led some to suggest a boycott of the game until either a statement is made or pronouns are added to the game.

โ€œI truly do not care if ConcernedApe speaks on pronouns in the game any more,โ€ one user said. โ€œI want [him] to condemn the transphobia and violence against the trans members of the community.โ€

An affiliate for the streaming site, Twitch, said they would not be playing the game any longer because of Barone's lack of response.

โ€œIt does not feel right for me to continue streaming or playing Stardew Valley,โ€ they wrote. โ€œIt truly breaks my heart to see the amount of people getting hurt.โ€

PinkNews has contacted Eric Barone for a comment.
