EU just ruins things because they can't build anything.

AI often isn't available because of obscure laws. chatGPT had been blocked for a month. Gemini is not available right now. A disaster.

Bureaucrats want to show that they exist.

To my knowledge they've never been "blocked". Google simply didn't release them in the EU for a while.

By delaying something introducing stupid regulations, they block it.

Personally I don't want to be drinking polluted water, eat unsanitary food, live in a place where all housing is owned by a handful of entities that engage in price-fixing, work 80 hours a week in an environment when response to mass worker suicides is to install suicide nets, have my privacy violated by private corporations (foreign or domestic) or have my insurance rates tripled by some opaque discriminatory AI, but you do you in whatever dystopian future you dream of.

You're just a low life europoor communist.

EU just wants to kill tech, because its ever changing nature means that they can't control it.

Quite the opposite, in EU there is no innovation because only big tech can comply with regulation.

EU is just hurting its own startups.

USA, India, China. They all have multibillion AI companies. EU doesn't because nobody wants to deal with unpredictable lawmakers

Web Engines Have Gone Bananas

While responding to poomodomoodododo's comment about the banana diet, I remembered a story from years ago about a dumb woman who ate nothing but bananas and got brain damage. I couldn't remember the details, so I searched for "banana diet brain damage."

Duckduckgo yields 2 negative articles and a bunch positive adverts articles about the greatness of bananas. BIPOC, I am doom-searching, so give me doom and gloom results. :marseybeanannoyed:

I even found this garbage article by a female :marseyairquotes: doctor :marseyairquotes::

No, duckduckBIPOC! :marseyraging: I am looking for bananas and brain damage. Not women prancing around and singing about the glory of Big Banana. :marseyfacepalm:

So I tried google which wasn't bad. Looks like a bunch of informative stuff! :marseynerd2: But as I kept scrolling, I get hit with this pile of carp:

Did you know that improper food canning can lead to death? Botulism—the result of bacteria growing inside improperly treated canned goods—is rare, but people can die from it. In any case, they'll certainly get very ill.

The dangers of food canning were explained to me clearly, succinctly, and with cited sources by Brad Barclay and someone going by Dromio05 on Reddit (who asked to withhold their real name for privacy reasons). Both were recently moderators on the /r/canning subreddit and hold science-related master's degrees.

Yet Reddit removed both moderators from their positions this summer because the mods refused to end /r/canning's protest against Reddit and its new API fees; the protest had made the entire subreddit "read only." Now, the ousted mods fear that /r/canning could become subject to unsafe advice that goes unnoticed by new moderators. "My biggest fear with all this is that someone will follow an unsafe recipe posted on the sub and get badly sick or killed by it," Dromio05 told me.

Only a true Janny would let 10s possible get sick because they want to use App A instead of App B :marseyjannymini:

Reddit mods are “rarely experts”

I reached out to /r/homeautomation's new moderators, and one responded, requesting anonymity. The mod said their credentials include heavy interest in home automation, "specifically Home Assistant," for the past two years, and frequent home automation conversations outside of Reddit, including with friends in related fields, like electronics, A/V equipment, HVAC systems, and cybersecurity.

The moderator contended that subject matter expertise isn't critical for proper moderation, saying:

"A moderator on Reddit is probably rarely an expert on the topic they're moderating over. Instead, they're a passionate member of the community that sees the value in sharing information between community members, and we'll all work together to make sure someone doesn't touch a live wire."

The NEW moderators might not be :marseyscientist:. Now there is no information stating the old mods were, but that is not the subject of this article.

Being honest, I stopped reading at this point but the article keeps going on. Let me know if I missed anything spectacular!

Edit: Lol I missed this. Literal next section

One of the top complaints I've heard about the Great Reddit Mod Purge is the company's alleged disregard for replaced mods' expertise. The swift, contentious nature of the mod replacements meant that old mods often didn't share advice with new mods. Meanwhile, the users Reddit chose to replace protesting mods may not have been properly vetted.

Context (for nerds)

This happened yesterday. For those unaware, InfluxDB is some database offering no one cares about. Unfortunately that's not true because some people care about it :marseyconfused2: People cared so much that InfluxData (the developing company), about a decade ago, jumped in the SaaS game and made their own cloud offering to host InfluxDB instances. For some reason, this was considered a good idea and people used their service.

Quite suddenly, some European region :marseyflagpoland: and some Asian region :chiobu: containing InfluxDB instances were shut off. Normally, deprecation of services are well advertised by a vendor. This isn't the case here and it's why I posted this: the CTO jumped in on HN to try to do some damage control. He is also a co-founder, according to his HN profile and by his own admittance. What does he have to say?

:marseychad: Hi, cofounder and CTO here. We notified everyone via email on February 23, April 6 and May 15th. We also offered to help migrate all users. I realize that it's not ideal that we've shut down this system, but we made our best efforts to notify affected users and give them options to move over to other regions. If you've been impacted by this, please email me personally and I will do my best to help out: paul at influxdata.com.

Drama

To summarize why this is r-slurred: Paul here notified his customers that they would permanently shut off products they pay for by sending only :marseybrainlet:three emails:!marseybrainlet:. In enterprise, this is supremely r-slurred: emails are likely to be caught by a spam filter or never read.

HN agrees and gets angry:

:soyjaktantrum: This is insane.

...

This screams either gross incompetence or straight up negligence. This is such a solvable problem (as many here have already mentioned various solutions), but I'm honestly just flabbergasted that this is a problem that is even being discussed here right now.

As a DBaaS, the data of your customers should be your number one priority. If its not, y'all need to take a hard look at what the heck your value proposition is.

We weren't impact by this directly, but you can be sure that this is going to be one of the topics for discussion amongst my teams this week. Mostly how we can either move off InfluxDB Cloud or ensure that our DR plans are up to date for the rug being pulled out from under us from you guys in the future.

\

:soyjaktantrum: Paul, are you actually for real right now? Did you really just say "We deleted all your data, and its your fault. We did whisper into the wind three times, you should have heard it. No, there is no chance of recovery"?

\

:soyjaktantrum: Hi Paul, email is one-way communication and not guaranteed to be delivered. At a minimum you should have monitored who did and did not respond to the email with some kind of action and those that did not should have more effort expended to be able to reach them. Finally, you should have kept the data for a reasonable amount of time (say 90 days) post shut-down so users that did not get the notification could download it. What you've done is super rude and if I were still a customer in an unaffected region it would definitely be reason enough to leave because it's pointless to sit and wait to see how you'll deal with my data when the time comes. Better to preempt that and leave while I still have control.

For anyone who thought this was purely incompetence: no. They just wanted to save money :marseycapitalistmanlet::

:marseychad: We get an email address because we need to contact our customers. After that we make best efforts but if people can’t respond to vendors they pay money to, we’re really at a loss. I realize that shutting down a region isn’t good. It’s not what we would have preferred, but we had to do it for the business. And we made an honest effort to contact all customers to help move them.

Plenty more rage in the thread. Meanwhile, on their forums, a developer advocate defends his piggy's actions;

:marseynpc: Hi all, I am ever so sorry the closure of these clusters has unexpectedly hit you. To confirm the information given by support. Communication was delivered in the following ways;

The UI was updated with a closure message for these regions.

The https://status.influxdata.com/ website also provides the notification.

We sent out emails on the following dates:

Feb 23, April 6, May 15.

We understand that a scream test would have been another form of communication that we overlooked. Some of the reasons for the closure of been outlined here: [some Slack link]

Conclusion

It's pretty rare to see cloudshit companies implode like this, and even more rare for representatives to directly engage in communities that would assuredly shit on them. Thus, this is funny. :marseyjerkoffsmile:

Prepare for the enshittification and bedbathandbeyonding of Magic the gathering.

If I had to make a guess as to why, given the fact that the people they laid off were all senior leaders and the numbers are good, it would be preparing for a pump and dump.

if you want to be able to pump and dump a really strong brand then you need to be able to have leaders who don't mind burning the brands equity in order to make money. My guess is that specifically what intending to do here.

Change the leadership, make new “sticky” products, pump revenue numbers, then spin out a public offering of the magic brand that looks like a great new reboot and refresh.

However the brand is only there to smuggle in the subscription model around new products that have strong margin. Everyone* gets rich cause they slaughtered their fattest pig and yet another cultural staple is killed.

>However the brand is only there to smuggle in the subscription model around new products that have strong margin

you know like selling pieces of paper for over a $100 a box for the last few decades?

I've seen people say that it would be nice to regulate loot boxes in video games, but they can't figure out how to do it without banning Magic's business model. I never understood why that would be a problem.

The genius thing about Magic is that it doesn't place individual value on a card... Video games don't have such safeguards. It's all on the studios servers and they can adjust value on the fly... I feel that's an intrinsic difference that places a video game closer to a casino ("the house always wins") than a TCG (throw out what you think is worth and let the community sort it out).

I hate cloudflare so fricking much

Can't access frick all from behind tor or a VPN anymore without getting 20+ "checking your connection is secure" (And frick off with that, you're literally just doing anti-spam checks against my browser, the connect doesn't come into play at all.)

And of course being a "sEcUirTy ProDucT" no errors or useful information of any sort is presented to me the user, lest I you know solve the fricking problem

For the last weeks you could work around this with an autoclicker and just spam the frick outta the spot where the captcha would appear until 1 made it thru. Now you seem to have to wait for the page to have loaded for a minute or more before even moving your mouse or you get rejected without even seeing a captcha.

At this point I just never close my browser because I know it's going to take upwards of an hour to log back into my various accounts and even if I do half the users of CF are massive r-slurs who do shit like put their API end point behind it so all their javashit calls fail and there's no way for me the user to ever fix this because cf will never accept a request made from javascript as being "legitment" (which is why you aren't goddarn meant to put your godarn API behind it)

And don't get me started on the tards who use a million different "cdn" subdomains each with their own cloudflare checks. "Oh you passed the challenge for x.com? Well now you need to do the same for imgs1.x.com, img2.x.com, imgs3.x.com ect before the site becomes usable

cloudflare has ruined the internet and I was right to publish all those bypasses on github back in the day

introducing: marseyMoji for linux!

For the past two days, I have toiled unrelentingly to create marseymoji! It is linux emoji font with several emojis replaced with marseys.

See the source code here: https://fsdfsd.net/cappy4king/marseymoji

lastly, credits to @chiobu for creating something similar before me: https://github.com/MarseyLivesMatter/MarseyLivesMatter.github.io/tree/main/MarseyFont

Linux installation

Tried on endeavourOS+KDE

1. remove previously installed emoji fonts to ensure marseymoji will be used system wide by default

2. install the font: https://fsdfsd.net/cappy4king/marseymoji/media/branch/main/fonts/marseymoji.ttf, then restart

Now the font should be used for emojis by default in most apps, including the desktop, chromium* and libreOffice! Additionally the font will be available to use in apps that support choosing fonts for whatever reason

3. on firefox, go to about:config. Search for font.name-list.emoji and replace the value with Noto Color Emoji, then restart the browser. Now the font should also be used on firefox

Windows Installation

Unfortunately the font is a bit broken on windows, so do not expect too much

1. install the windows version: https://fsdfsd.net/cappy4king/marseymoji/media/branch/main/fonts/marseymoji_windows.ttf. The preview will look like the emojis are blank

2. install the emoji polyfill extenision on a chrome based browser and restart the browser. The font should now be used for emojis however it's a bit clunky, the emojis will be replaced only after the site is done loading.

unfortunately, most apps including ms office will not support the font

MacOS

same as windows installation

full list of emojis (I have accounted for all gender/race variations but they aren't listed here):

Codecels take *another* L

Get to work, slaves! You want a stapler? Ask a receptionist. And now you share a desk with some autist who smells. Welcome to Google!

None

I think the sense of injustice may sometimes be to blame. Let me elaborate.

There have been times at Whole Foods when item after item isnt scanned, now you have to wait for an attendant. Usually they have 1 attendant for 10 machines, so now you've queued up to be helped.

Except there are times where attendants just go randomly help people, or help people who are loud or pull them in. If you have 3 or 4 people waiting for help, unable to proceed, the attendant should help in the order they needed help. You shouldnt see new people suddenly being helped if you've been waiting.

In any case, this has been so infuriating sometimes that I literally just walked away. I left everything, including frozen goods right at the checkout counter. I didnt know what to do to be helped on a fair basis.

it's like the checkout attendants aren't even familiar with a standard first in first out queue :marseyjerkoffsmile:

PrePrint: Lethal Infection of Human ACE2-Transgenic Mice Caused by SARS-CoV-2-1 related Pangolin Coronavirus GX_P2V(short_3UTR)

Daily Fail

Chinese scientists have been experimenting with a mutant coronavirus strain that is 100 percent lethal in mice — despite concerns such research could spark another pandemic.

Scientists in Beijing — who are linked to the Chinese military — cloned a Covid-like virus found in pangolins, known as GX_P2V, and used it to infect mice.

The mice had been 'humanized', meaning they were engineered to express a protein found in people, with the goal being to assess how the virus might react in humans.

Every rodent that was infected with the pathogen died within eight days, which the researchers described as 'surprisingly' quick.

The team were also surprised to find high levels of viral load in the mice's brains and eyes - suggesting the virus, despite being related to Covid, multiplies and spreads through the body in a unique way.
