I think having a different perspective can really change the narrative. Maybe your tone of voice was not great when asking the employee, and honestly security guards staring at their phones is not that big of a deal. I don't think the security guards have let past anyone that they shouldn't have, at least in my experience. And also, your statement of the business collapsing, and "the city being hostile to anyone but the wealthy" is quite the exaggeration...

If the company removed the current manager (he's been there for years) and put in someone who cared, that store could be a fantastic local place once again. We used to shop there for everything because it was convenient. Now we just swing by when we have to, because we need a specific item ASAP. I'm willing to bet a lot of other customers are like us.

This all makes sense: I do see a lot of people there who look like they're homeless, which doesn't bother me. My frustration isn't even with the staff—it's with corporate, which refuses to give the staff the tools they need to make it a decent place to shop.

Last time I was there, a dude knelt in front of the wrapped beef and zipped a bunch of packages into his backpack before strolling out. Fricker. Time before that, the security guard had his hands full with an addict who was caught trying to shoplift, or something, and who then decided to scream and threaten the security guard who is not paid enough for all that. A manager had to throw out all the baked goods in the case. Earlier this year, some shithead had stuck their finger into every single heirloom tomato. I cannot imagine working there and dealing with the outdoor insane asylum that moves inside to create mayhem. I hate it. I feel really bad for retailers. I think OP is mad at the wrong people
