If any of these exact storybeats ever sound familiar, it's because I plagiarized most/all of it from a longform Afrikaans Calvinist article (which in turn probably plagiarized it from some more famous English sources), which my father had excitedly desired me to read during the 2024 December holidays. The vast majority of the article revolved around a Calvinist introspection about self-deceit, and how History and politics is shaped by how people record and perceive historic events both during and after key happenings. But the incredible and exciting part my father wanted to showcase me, was a chapter regarding the infamous Tulip Mania period, which occurred during 1634-1637 in Holland, during the zenith of Dutch colonial and economic power, when the Dutch was by far the most prosperous nation on earth, when taken into account their meagre population and size, due to the astronomical wealth generated by the Dutch, due to the infamous VOC (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie) or Dutch East India Company, perhaps one of the wealthiest private enterprises in all of human history.

During the period, one of history's 1st and most well documented Speculative Bubbles occurred, when seemingly the entire Dutch nation state was beset by a fervent mania from all sectors of society. Rich merchants and poor farmers would buy the new fad, Tulips imported from Turkey & China, at increasingly outrageous sums of money, for the sake of selling these (at the time) rare imported plants, which the Dutch didn't know how to perfectly cultivate, so it wasn't a gaurantee that you could just make more of them once you bought rare tulips for literal prince's ransoms!

These tulips, which at 1st were bought, because they were the showing-off fad for the turbo wealthy new Merchant-class of the state, were then bought for the sake of selling at ever increasingly higher prices, which in turn made the tulip a fad for wealth accruement instead! Many good historians go to great lengths to decipher primary sources, written during contemporary times about events, to determine how bias from the authors could fabricate or contaminate their view of events. So what exactly was the deal with Calvinists? What the heck do they have to do with anything? Well Calvinists were relatively conservative for their contemporary timeframe, and the feared the new era of Holland having accrued so much unthinkable wealth, more than any nation-state before had ever known to have accumulated so fast and in such an incredible short timespan.

They feared and believed that all of this wealth of the Merchant-class was rotting and decaying society. They feared that this new trend of consumerism and speculation on stocks was leading to societal downfall. In fact only a small fraction of Dutch society even partook in the Tulipmania, and usually only the upper-middle rich Merchant classes. Less than 5% of the whole population even bought a tulip at any point, and when the bubble burst, those whom lost money were those least vulnerable from bankruptcy. While losing half your wealth is a serious hit, these Dutch merchants were so filthy stinking rich by the mid 1640s, they literally didn't care!

Additionally, the reality was that most dutch Merchant-class bought tulips as a show of wealth, it was a demonstration of their cosmopolitan and urbane manner to show off amongst all of their straggy rich merchant friends. Sports Interactive regret to inform that, following extensive internal discussion and careful consideration with SEGA, we have made the difficult decision to cancel Football Manager 25 and shift our focus to the next release.

For the large numbers of you who pre-ordered FM25, we thank you enormously for your trust and support – we're very sorry to have let you down. Please see the FAQs below on obtaining your refund.

Development Update: Football Manager 25

We know this will come as a huge disappointment, especially given that the release date has already moved twice, and you have been eagerly anticipating the first gameplay reveal. We can only apologise for the time it has taken to communicate this decision. Due to stakeholder compliance, including legal and financial regulations, today was the earliest date that we could issue this statement.

We have always prided ourselves on delivering the best value for money games that bring you countless hours of enjoyment, that feel worth every moment and every penny you spend. With the launch of FM25 we set out to create the biggest technical and visual advancement in the series for a generation, laying the building blocks for a new era.

Due to a variety of challenges that we've been open about to date, and many more unforeseen, we currently haven't achieved what we set out to do in enough areas of the game, despite the phenomenal efforts of our team. Each decision to delay the release was made with the aim of getting the game closer to the desired level but, as we approached critical milestones at the turn of the year, it became unmistakably clear that we would not achieve the standard required, even with the adjusted timeline.

Whilst many areas of the game have hit our targets, the overarching player experience and interface is not where we need it to be. As extensive evaluation has demonstrated, including consumer playtesting, we have clear validation for the new direction of the game and are getting close – however, we're too far away from the standards you deserve.

We could have pressed on, released FM25 in its current state, and fixed things down the line - but that's not the right thing to do. We were also unwilling to go beyond a March release as it would be too late in the football season to expect players to then buy another game later in the year.

Through the cancellation, every effort is now focused on ensuring that our next release achieves our goal and hits the quality level we all expect. We will update you on how we are progressing with that as soon as we are able to do so.

As a Black woman, the entitlement of white families and the shit they get away with both amazes me-and enrages me.

I'm away on a business trip-kind of my first. They are paying for my hotel room and everything. It's pretty awesome. The hotel I'm at has a swim pool so I decided to bring my bathing suit and go for an evening swim after my conference.

I figured I'd wait till about an hour before pool closing so it'd be less busy. Clearly, everyone had the same idea as me. Fine, whatever. There were 3 parties of us there-myself, solo, a filipino family (maybe 5-6 of them children included) and a big group of white families together for what I assume to be a hockey tournament (I saw them checking in with their sticks and hockey bags in tow).

The white adults were absolutely plastered. They had several coolers in the pool (not allowed) boxes of pizza (also not allowed). The adults were all drinking beers poolside (again, NOT allowed). Meanwhile, their kids are causing an absolute disturbance. Prior, their sons were playing FRICKING FLOOR HOCKEY in the hotel HALLWAY. I could hear them before I left and I saw them on during my time in the pool (they were coming in and out) and on my way back to my room.

At one point, one of the moms is so shitfaced she drops her glass and it shatters. she then starts scraping the glass into the pool where myself and the Filipino families kids were swimming. One of the moms goes "no no dont do that just leave it"

I decide I'm done with the main pool and head over to the hot tub where more of the Filipino family are hanging out. As we're relaxing, one of the front desk staff comes in with one of the boys. The boy goes "guys guys listen-the front desk says we need to quiet down we're being too loud" to which the moms respond "we're being too LOUD?! Tell them to shut the front door!" (Which makes zero sense because the pool door WAS shut-it requires key card entry). They were just that fricking loud.

Just the absolute gall and entitlement of the parents to think they should be allowed to disrupt everyone else was appalling. I lean over to someone in the hot tub and go "have they been acting like that all night?" "Yup, since we got here!" And then we started talking about how rude they were, the disrespect to public space, the glass in the pool, etc. Suddenly all the boys decide theyre down playing hotel hallway hockey and come into the pool. There's a huge sign that says "no diving-shallow pool". So naturally, they all start doing cannonballs. The splashes were so big they were hitting me and the family in the hottub. The parents continued to sit back shitfaced and pleased with themselves.

I'd had enough so I left and went to complain to front staff. I let him know that the family was drunk off their asses, not controlling their kids, the boys playing hockey in the hall, the broken glass, the pizza, the way the mom disrespected the first staff member to go in, all of it. He was very apologetic to which I said it's not his fault and the family would likely retaliate again (all the front desk staff were POC) and he said he'd handle it and escalate to management. I went off to my room.

Some of you are gonna say this is just a shitty parent thing-and it is. However, whiteness does come into play. Watch a Black person act up and see how we're shamed, dragged across the internet, everything. Watch a Black person follow the rules and still get shit. I'm thinking of those stories of Black people getting kicked out of pools in their own apartment complexes cause racists POS didn't think they live or "belong" there.

White people are just allowed to be shameless. The reason that mom was so bold talking back to the staff is cause she felt entitled and knew she held a position of power. She is the white woman, and is offended by the POC staff member politely telling her to get a hold of herself. The staff dare tell them how to behave??? They know at the end of the day they will get a free pass. I want to make sure to include the dads in this too cause they were shit too. I mention the mom cause my time there she was the one mouthing back. The dads were all standing around drunk and smug.

And this is how kids, especially white kids, turn into entitled adults. Mommy and daddy never say no. Of course theyd be allowed to play floor hockey in the middle of a hotel hallway and disrupt other patrons! Of course theyre allowed to break pool rules! Why shouldn't they? They're watching their parents do the exact same shit!

I'm not saying BIPOC should get a free pass to be unruly shits btw, or that we never act up. I'm angry at how different the repercussions are and how white folk are simply allowed to do whatever they please and train their kids to be the same because society has put them so far up on a pedestal.
