Context

Nigeria is one of the highest oil producing countries in the world and a member of the OPEC cartel yet it is very poor because of mismanagement.

The government used to subsidise gas/fuel but can no longer afford to because of said mismanagement and had in recent times had to borrow just to fund these subsidies leading to the country spending 92% of its revenues on debt servicing.

Anyways there was a hotly contested election earlier this year and the new president removed fuel subsidies immediately which caused domestic pump prices, transportation costs, and prices of goods and services to increase.

Sharp increase in prices of goods = fall in demand because most people are poor and live on less than $2 a day, and spend 60% of income on food.

Most affected are s*x workers who have to reduce their prices in the face of dwindling demand for their services.

“This is apart from other incentives like good food, drinks, chicken, Isi-ewu and other goodies that customers provide on their own volition,”

"Unlike now when customers hardly come to hang out in the evening, we used to have customers on day-break ready to offer well above N20,000 and also take care of your accommodation, food and drinks. This is really hardtimes for us,” she said.

Jennifer further stated that most of her colleagues who could not pay for their rooms have returned home with regrets of penury.

"Some of them left without their property as the hotel management seized their cloths and electronics because of the money they are owing. We that are still here are surviving through the grace of God,” she explained.

Narrating her latest experience as a result of the cash crunch, Ms Helen Ediga at Onitsha Road, said she ready to quit the business if given alternative source of livelihood.

I've been at my current job for over a year now and it's got solid pay ~$60k/yr. I've still been bumming it at my parents with the goal moving out by buying my own place - likely with a friend who'd pay me rent.

However, with the housing market as it is with 8% interest rates and low supply it seems I'm stuck kicking back with my parents again.

On today's episode of Redditor's Are Financially Illiterate Morons, our intrepid hero, /u/Pelthail, has lost a... let's say "significant" sum of money by being scammed. How did this happen, you ask? You're not the only one.

How???????

Well, my wife had her credit card info stolen a couple months ago, so I was already on alert when I received a message about fraudulent activity on my account. Then the scammer called me from the Wells Fargo customer service phone number (I later found out that scammers use apps to spoof their phone numbers).

He had me verify my account info and had me set up a new password which now I understand was him just using that info to gain access to my account. And once he was in, he used Zelle to transfer all my money.

Don't worry, I feel very stupid for it all and in hindsight I can see all the red flags that I should have recognized in the moment. I always thought I was too smart to fall prey to these scams but I guess I wasn't.

That's right, after his (presumably) r-slurred wife had her credit card info stolen, our hero was on high alert. So high, he gave his bank account info, including his password, to some jackass that called him up and said, "Hello, I am Rajesh from Banga... I mean, Bob from San Francisco. Your Wells Fargo account has been hacked. Please do the needful and give me all your money."

Fortunately, our hero is taking his frick up in stride. Why, a man like him would never try to foist the blame off on someone else. Nor would any other fine, upstanding Redditor.

This wasn't his only bank account, but it was his primary one, which means he probably has less than $2,000 in the others. And no investments to speak of, since if they were at Wells Fargo, his primary account, the scammer would've got those too. This motherlover is broke.

I made a post the other day about how I was stiffed on a $550 tab by a couple attorneys and followed the advice I received and reached out to the firm on the card to tell them about what happened. Well it completely backfired, the woman on the phone who I think was just a receptionist told me she would follow up with my concern. I made a post on their Facebook page too but somehow it got deleted? They ended up calling my restaurant on a Saturday and told them about it and that if I was not terminated they would be pursuing legal action against both myself and the restaurant.

My boss was very nice about it and said that he actually contacted his family attorney about what to do and unfortunately they had to let me go. I'm just devastated and have never felt more worthless it just sucks how we are so replaceable and people deemed “better than thou” can have our jobs taken from us just like that.

Hello everyone so I currently have 16k in CC debt and my wife has about 25k so I have about 41k in CC debt and with both our cars our total debt is at 85k but that's our only debt. I'm in the military in California and my wife is a stay at home mom taking care of our 10 mo old baby. She was working prior when we lived in NC and living out here is so darn expensive so we've had to resort to using our CCs a bunch to get by since I only make about 3,300 a month. I applied to my banks for lowering our interest rates with the SCRA(servicemember civil relief act). I've sold a bunch of stuff we don't use and even applied for a second job. We also applied for WIC and most likely will get that since according to their website my monthly pay is under what they have listed for a 3 person household. We've cut out our luxury's such as eating out and buying miscellaneous stuff. We are also considering changing our phone plan from Verizon to T-Mobile due to that being cheaper after looking at their rates. We haven't ever missed a payment on any of our debts and have stopped using or CCs all together.

Is there anything I'm missing that could help us pay off our debts faster or assist in saving more money to pay off our debts.
