For those who don't know The Boy and The Heron is the latest Miyazaki film that was released to critical acclaim but tepid audience reaction because it was too "weird". People here are probably aware of the Spiderverse animated flicks but not how massively overrated they're amongst online "cinephiles". Not only does this film have a rabid capeshit fanbase but it has also managed to rope in the wokes and the film twitter/letterboxd crowd (seriously it was the highest ranked film of all time on letterboxd).

Because Miyazaki's film had a lukewarm audience reception it was a genuine surprise it won over Across the Spiderverse. Suffice to say, these nerds are not taking it well . Some of the reactions.

Spiderverse is still the frontrunner for the Oscars. Still, the meltdown would be 100x this if Spiderverse were to lose at the Oscars. My son has a crush visiting our home for a few days. In typical cringey mom mode, I made an off the cuff remark along the lines of "don't worry--dad and I will make ourselves scarce in case you want to make a move." He looked at me like I had two heads and said: "I would NEVER do that. What if she isn't interested in me? That would put her in a really uncomfortable position." I have never been happier about being called out by my kiddo.

EDIT to add: It's really shocking to me the lack of reading comprehension from male presenting redditors. It's not often (read: ever) that I get to post about drama from my country, but this one is hot off the press and I think you guys might find interesting.

Full info is in the nitter thread, but here's a quick rundown:

Eduards Sizovs is some bloke that organizes and runs several international tech conferences, of those the two that are important to this are DevTernity and JDkon, though there are others

Apparently the organizers of these events do not accept applications from potential speakers, but instead reach out to people they are interested in, thus creating this more of a closed group of speakers.

Well, now as it turns out, there are fake speakers that are signed and advertised at these conferences (and have been in the past). In reality, they are merely fake online personas created by Eduards, and have never actually appeared at any of his events. Currently 4 such personas have been identified, all of them being women.

Here's Alina Prokhoda, a speaker at the upcoming DevTernity conference with prior experience at WhatsApp and Microsoft MVP who has been identified as a non-existent person who has never worked for those companies:

Besides these there's also Julia Kirsina who worked as Uber's software Architect in Estonia, despite Uber not even having such division in that country, and there's also Natalie Standler who (didn't) work at coinbase.

Eduards has pushed back against the notion of him creating fake speakers by saying that a single fake was added by accident, but was quickly proven wrong when it was shown that these 4 fine ladies have been signed up to his conferences on 5 different occasions in total, and yet have given 0 speeches, without anyone ever seeing them in person.

This caused the organizer to go into full damage control mode as other, actually real speakers started pulling out of the conference after being informed of the controversy

But how could this happen? Surely someone would've noticed that these people don't exist?

Well, as it turns out, while the people themselves are fake, they have a very real online presence- we're talking several different social media accounts with over 100k followers, actively posting motivational quotes about girls who code, all while hiding behind what are likely AI-generated pictures of women. In short, Eduards has been quite successfully running several catfish accounts pretending to be women

Even Kiwifarms' LFJ gave her opinion on the matter, which is a complete moment which just shows that fricking everything and everyone is connected

So now for the big question: why would he do it?

Well, the guy who broke this story speculates that the reason behind why every fake persona is a woman is that Eduards, the organizer, has been trying to up his DEI compliance to attract bigger fish to his conferences by making them seem more inclusive than they really are, and probably to get some gibs/shoutouts from the organizations that promote such nonsense in the first place. Oh, and of course to milk attendees who pay... up to 800$ to attend? WTF people?

Well, now he's been caught and his entire life's work will likely go down the drain. Sucks to suck

Context

Shein is a chinese clothing brand thay has exploded in popularity over the last couple of years due to mass producing fast fashion clothing items for very cheap. It's become one of the the largest clothing retailers in the world, bringing in 22 billion dollars in revenue just in 2022.

As may you have guessed with this being a chinese company that sells products for fairly cheap, there's a fair amount worker abuse in the sweatshops where workers have been reported to work 18 hour shifts for as little as 4 cents for each item they produce.

With the company being as large as it is and often partnering with various influencers, they recieved a lot of criticism over this.

The company not fond of the bad press, attempted to circumvent these rumors by paying a few American influencers to come do a tour of one of their factories. Here's the video:

In the video we find that the influencers unanimously agreeing that were no human rights violations and the company actually treats it's workers humanly

A lot of hate directed from people went to this influencer rhat looks like a fat 12 year old boy plus size model that's self described as a "investigative journ*list" and "confidence activists":

Finally, at some point, my wife had little sexual interest in me. We talked about therapy frequently, but we both put it off due to time and money and my inability to see just how bad it was needed and her inability to convey that I was in need of help. We are starting Discernment Therapy and I want to keep the marriage together. I think with individual and couples therapy we can heal and move forward. Now she seems to think these "new love" feelings for him would be lasting and she does not seem able to look at his flaws and consider how they could be a problem in 5+ years. She also does not seem to consider that she has put him on a pedestal, but only spent a few hours with him a week with the occasional weekend when I take the kids to our parents without her (I was unaware that's what she was doing and they tried to hide it). She then compares me to him, but I am the one navigating her anxiety and depression constantly and living the stresses of our careers and caring for our children constantly. I have grown bitter about her relationship and that probably shows. She has become very focused on herself (not all bad), but specifically working with her therapist on "Being happy without feeling guilty". She has always been selfless and family focused, but that has shifted during the relationship with her recent bf. We are starting Discernment Therapy, but I have no idea if she truly wants to figure it out or if she has already made up her mind and is just doing this to appease our Caholic families (who do not know about any of the open marriage or her recent relationship). I am very lost and looking for any helpful advice or resources (already starting individual therapy for myself).
