Weekly "What are you playing thread?" #37

Introduction

Yeah, I know this isn't my weekly thread and thread hijacking will not be tolerated but who cares. Before you ask where @loli_esports is he has recently posted a picture of Frieren with a white monster and the caption "alcoholic anime girl save me save me alcoholic anime girl" so he's doing great. The threads will be now under new management with less fun but more autism I hope you'll love it :marseyshy3:

I'm planning on dropping them each Sunday at 4-6pm CET but if someone in a more popular (=better) time zone wants to do it feel free to just do it lol.

Dwarf Fortress Saga

Furthermore, I'll randomly pick a popular game and let drama users rank it and discuss it in the pinned comment. I think this is a good idea and if you disagree I'll be sad.

This week's entry will be HADES

A rogue-lite hack and slash dungeon crawler in which Zagreus, son of Hades the Greek god of the dead, attempts to escape his home and his oppressive father by fighting the souls of the dead through the various layers of the ever-shifting underworld, while getting to know and forging relationships with its inhabitants.

I don't really play roguelikes, so I had a lot of fun with this game for like 40 hours. I didn't 100% it, but I beat it enough to finish most of the character scenes.

I have friends who are way more into the genre and they were less impressed with the gameplay but still enjoyed it in general.

Jump in the discussion.

Personally I didn't really care for it. But I don't like roguelites in general so my opinion on any game in the genre doesn't count for much. Giving it a 3 because I just want to see the votes otherwise I wouldn't rate it.

you have to add a dummy option for people who just want to click something and see results else 90% of the votes are gonna be random

The surveys for my master's thesis had this same problem. First I was happy to get so many responses so easily, until I realized that the reliability of the responses was trash. I took the data anyway because I was already desperate and on sick leave to get an extension (otherwise I wouldn't have used rdrama for scientific work) but for the next time I'll know how to do it.

Basically, dramatards only press

I beat the final boss like 3 times. I very rarely enjoy reconsuming any form of media and roguelites are absolutely not for me because that's what the gameplay loop basically is.

At least I managed to "finish" it unlike Enter the Gungeon which is impossible.

Idk what this type of game is called. Roguelite?

Where it's like there's a starting area then you go into a randomized dungeon.

Hades is like this and Cult of the Lamb is like this.

I hate this kind of game. I think people should stop making them. It's not interesting and it feels lazy.

This is like new trend. Card shit has gotten big and RNG shit has gotten big. I hate both.

That's my opinion. :tayshrug:

This genre allows indie devs to create ok/good games relatively cheaply. Cards games are trash, but complaining about RNG just means you have to get good.

nah, it's not about how hard it is. i was good at cult of the lamb

the random dungeon grid shit just felt lazy. I put a pretty good chunk of hours into it to give it a fair shake, just didn't like it.

don't know this specific game. All my favorite games have a big RNG component, but of course it's possible to do it badly.

Cult of the Lamb actually just drops the rogue part entirely. You are supposed to complete the dungeons and when you do you move on to the next.

I've been playing Cyberpunk 2077 - it's actually very good now even though I have problems with the new level scaling mechanic (and dislike that they removed some more interesting 'preparation' elements of a stealth-hacking playstyle like breach protocol)

(not my gameplay but I'm too lazy to record any :marseyantiwork2:)

Major recommend right now even if it's a bit janky. It's really fun and it's got a great story with loads of atmosphere. Bonus "le epic graphisk" if you have a $500+ nvidia brick

If you want to play a GOAT cyberpunk RPG / immersive sim and haven't played Deus Ex, make sure to grab it on steam while it's $0.97, then use these mods:

https://kentie.net/article/dxguide

https://kentie.net/article/d3d10drv

I've also played Amnesia: The Bunker - which is now my favorite Frictional Games project and the best Amnesia by far. It's a lot more open-ended and feels like an immersive sim + a 'single creature' horror game like Alien: Isolation. It's genuinely excellent and since the gameplay revolves around exploration (of both the environment and the mechanics) I won't spoil it here. Just check it out, even if you're not usually a fan of survival horror.

(It was so impactful to me that I was 'inspired' by many of it's mechanics for my most recent game jam project)

Yay! These threads are back.

I'm still playing RimWorld! I'm starting to consider the endgame since I have all of the spaceship parts researched now, but my colony is massive. So far I've got 70+ colonists and about 400 animals. Food is getting a bit tricky to balance at this stage; I'm having to put my colonists on vegan diets because the majority of my meat production is going towards feeding my carnivorous animals. I have 20 cougars, 50 wargs, 50 wolves and 30 cats, so it doesn't leave much room - especially since my chickens were almost wiped out by a brutal cold snap with temperatures reaching like -30 centigrade.

Other than that, I'm still playing Grounded with my friend. I kinda just want it to be over, despite how good the game is compared to other entries in the genre.

We also played Crab Champions recently - very fun game, but I feel like we basically saw all it had to offer in a single session.

I also played a little of The Binding of Isaac after getting whatever the most recent DLC was, but bounced off it quickly. I'm too rusty to handle the difficulty level of the save I have and couldn't get past the second set of levels after like 4 attempts.

Been playing SimCity 4 and Star Valor on my laptop. SimCity 4 continues to be a masterpiece and I've been experimenting with weird city layouts, with some degree of success. I'm unsure about Star Valor. I played a few hours and it felt like I'd already seen everything. It seemed like a less interesting Starsector, and if I just wanted a space-themed ARPG I'd play Drox Operative.

I also need to go finish the Spyro Reignited Trilogy. I'm up to the last boss in the last game so really just need to bang that out. I cannot recommend this collection enough. The visuals, audio and just the vibes in general are impeccable.

I also bought Forza Horizon 5 and Anno 1800 in the Steam sale. Excited to play these with my friend. Does anybody have some co-op tips for either of those?

Thinking about buying Songs of Syx, Dwarf Fortress, Kenshin and maybe also SimCity 3000 soon. I also recently uncovered my trove of Skyrim mods and save files, so I might get back into a run I've been playing since 2018.

Recently I played Phoenix Point, an X-Com successor led by the creator of the original. A Lovecraftian mist has covered the land, billions have walked into the sea, they have returned as horrible crabmen, centipedewomen, etc., and the apocalypse is well underway. You lead the Phoenix Project which is militantly opposed to this state of affairs.

It would be amazing if it wasn't so flawed. The key new thing it does is have free aiming for bursts of fire with individual rounds simulated. So you take your guy's POV and have circles indicating your aiming cone. There's location based damage. When it works it's great. Where "flanking" in new XCOM is a board-game-like matter of the relative positions of the two units and the cover on a grid, "flanking" in Phoenix Point means actually getting a good angle to bypass cover or hit a weaker spot.

But it doesn't always work. There's a "quick aim" you should be able to use for dead easy shots, but it's too risky since it does something stupid too often. I had a guy up on a roof behind a low parapet, and aimed down at a horrid crabman. The crabman filled my reticle, a sure shot by all indications, but when I fired my guy simply unloaded his machine gun into the wall in front of him. I had a guy standing adjacent to a stationary target I needed to destroy, so I risked the quick aim. Miss. I used the manual aim. Miss. I figured out that the tip of my guy's barrel was inside the target, so the hits weren't registering. There's a risk of friendly fire, generally cool, but I also once stood two snipers next to each other overwatching a downrange choke point and had one shoot the other directly in the back.

But the most incomprehensible decision with the aiming i that they made the units' idle animations significant to gameplay. They keep moving while you aim, just slowed down. For the typical unit with slow idle animations, this means sometimes you're zooming in and out of the manual aim to advance it to a point where you have a good angle on the head or whatever. Some units have more spastic idle animations, so they're still going pretty fast when it slows down, and then you have a little bit of shitty FPS in your X-Com.

The strategic pacing seemed off to me - I only saw one of the biggest non-boss monstrosity, in the last mission, and of the second biggest enemy, an artillery crab, I only saw a weak harassment version until the penultimate mission. And they were great enemies. I had my guys in a 4 story building defending a moon launch and the full-power artillery crab just knocked down half the building.

It's a shame, there are a lot of good ideas in this game.

I've played and finished Symphony of War: The Nephilim Saga recently and while I have some complaints about it, I genuinely believe this is a great title. In short, it's a fun blend of older titles such as Ogre mixed with Fire Emblem. You can create your own squads by filling them up with named heroes and other units providing them with battle tactics, stats and even artifacts to enhance their performance, and feel like a grand strategist or something. The story and characters are borderline insufferable but you can skip the cutscenes and stuff so the army organization between the battles is actually really fun. It is prone to min/maxxing (especially on higher difficulties and some achievements) although you don't really have to do it.

I recently bought Sekiro and so far am really impressed :marseyexcited:

I'm only like 2-3 hours in, so everything is still largely a mystery to me, but I like how different the narrative style is :marseythinkorino:

All I knew going in is that combat is parry-focused, there's a mechanic that kills off NPCs, and that it was more "linear" (as in, not an RPG with complex point distributions).

But once I started noooticing the level of exposition in this game (eavesdropping, way more cutscenes, a lot of NPCs to talk to, etc.) something clicked in my head; FromSoft is trying out all the Western-style themes as well as "genres" with their games. Dark Souls is a Western-themed action RPG, then they do the Gothic Horror (aka western) themed game, then they literally do their own version of a God of War/Uncharted, "cinematic" Sonyshit style game (with their own unique Jap style/charm intertwined), and finally Elden Ring doing the (western) openworldslop style (with their own unique Jap style/charm intertwined).

:marseyautismtalking#:

(and yes, I know Sony isn't "western," but the westerners specifically gobble up their unique brand of wannabe movie-type games, and I think a lot of them are even from western studios)

I don't even think I've gotten to an actual boss yet, but the world is cool and I can see myself enjoying the combat :marseyfluffy:

Lies of P the world, lore, and art design are all top notch.

But the combat is a little too easy. It's missing a certain element that makes FromSoft games excruciating but rewarding

I need to finish Little Goodie Two Shoes so I can get the alternate endings for Freya and Lebkuchen but I feel no motivation to play the Witching Hour bits because they're hard yet I've already done them so it feels tedious. At least I can skip text I've already read.

I want to play the Yohane platformer but I have to finish LGTS first and I have no money since I'm moving.

I've also been forced to play Soda Dungeon 2 since the original was so old it's been removed from the App Store. The original barely counted as a video game but I found it a lot of fun and the second one adds needless complexity I don't really like even if it actually adds a bit of story.

But the real answer is: I haven't really been having time to play anything I've been too busy pumping out chapters so I can get my book contracted so I can make neetbux or working on double math classes.

Nothing. I was playing Terraria not long ago but dropped it.

I did a calamity revengeance (summoner) run and then tried the calamity infernum mod (magic this time), but post moon lord is a slog. The bosses are usually more interesting in infernum, but old duke was "dodge at a regular pace for a few minutes" on the end of the fight, and the next boss, devourer of gods, seemed to be the same thing for much longer.

So I just stopped.

I would say it's biggest strength is that it manages to tell a truly "epic" story without the role playing options breaking down, which tends to happen in a lot of these types of games.

Your player character, can be a literal angel/devil/aeon/etc, but instead of it feeling absurd, the power fantasy feels justified and authentic to scale of what's happening in the story.

Only complaints I'd have about WOTR is the stupid conquest mode I literally had to download a mod and cheat it to enjoy the core game. That and later levels some enemies have armour buffs so high, and you have armour buffs so high, that combat is just a back and forth of misses or low damage.

Otherwise it really is a great game.

I have jumped back into Control. Goddam it's good. Gameplay really hits the spot and blasting foes feels impactful. I love the brutalist design of the Oldest House and the SCP inspired story is just :marseychefkiss: Remedy is beyond based

I replayed Control in my Remedy marathon before Alan Wake 2's release and it really is just a great game, the visual design of the entire experience is so artful and intentional, and the way the story is crafted and communicated is :marseynut:, not to mention how it ties in to the other Remedy games. It's very nice to play triple A games made by devs who actually care lmao

I dunno if I'm r-slurred but I just couldn't beat the first boss the dude that floats around in the stairwell. I tried a hundred times I must've missed something important.

I've recently played this too and liked it a lot. The side content is a bit whatever and at some places the story felt too arbitrary yet contrived, but I've also really enjoyed it.

this game goes on sale a lot, and i get tempted, but most reviews i've read said it's only a ~10hr experience which puts me off. is it really that short?

Nah closer to 15-20, maybe even longer depending on how quickly you learn to navigate the Oldest House. There's also two DLCs that'll add 10hrs to your playthrough.
