Weekly "What are you playing thread?" #40

What a week huh

The day before drama, valve failing at cs again and again and posting coal in dota, e3 officially gone, there's something about skull and bones, vitality winning blast and 40 streamers managed to clear classic world of warcraft content without dying (the hardest feat in gaming) sooooo ...

What are you playing currently? !g*mers

Game to Discuss?

As I've just seen a clip from a S-tier qualifier game where someone lost the final match because they didn't know a 25 year old mechanic (pro RTS players btw :marseyxd:) I'll declare Age of Empires 2 the game of the week!

This week's entry will be Age of Empires 2

Take control of a powerful civilization. Lead them through 1000 years of the Middle Ages to riches and greatness. Will you Intimidate the world into following you by using military force? Rule the world with honor and nobility by using commerce and diplomacy? Or Underhandedly seize power through conspiracy, deception and regicide? There are many paths to power, there can only be one ruler!

200h into DE... It's shit.

Not like "hey they changed this one tiny thing I don't like" shit, but like they messed up basic core mechanics that are needed for a game to function, like pathfinding; units will now get stuck on walls or on gates and get this, walk the opposite direction or completely disregard your orders, stuff like that.

The servers are shit. Constant crashing and delay, players disconnect constantly with no way to reconnect.

I love Age of Empires 2!

It fell into that sweet spot that was after RTS games were super primitive and basic (like the original AoE or like WarCraft 2 or something), but before they transitioned to really ugly 3D (Empire Earth, C&C Generals etc). And in terms of audio, Shamburger is burned into my brain lmao

I really like the Definitive Edition, although I know some people have issues with it. Fortunately for me, I'm simply not skilled enough for the problems to be relevant to me. The only thing I don't like is how the corpses don't decay into skeletons any more! :marseyskeleton2:

Did anybody play Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds? It was basically a Star Wars themed total conversion mod which had some pretty interesting campaigns and ideas.

Did anybody play Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds?

I prefer it to AoE2. The depth that fighters give are great. I do hate that in the expansion they added those stupid air artillery who outranged all air defense and could do a shit ton of damage on the first shot.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Ohhh, I think I remember those. Were they called like battlecruisers or something, or am I misremembering because the Galactic Empire ones looked really similar to the StarCraft unit?

On that note, one thing I really liked about that game is that each faction had visually distinct units. That's one thing I've always found a bit jarring about AoE2.

Were they called like battlecruisers or somethin

I just checked "Air Cruiser". They had cool designs but were just frustrating to deal with.

That's one thing I've always found a bit jarring about AoE2.

I was first introduced to AOE2 through GB, and was shocked that it didn't have unique designs for factions. I also like how quick it is to see what a Unit is based on its blaster. AOE2 its sometimes hard to tell what counters what with what, especially when it comes to mounted units.

I want to get back into AoE2 especially since i bought the fancy new version, but i have to finish RDR2 first. I have too many Christmas and car projects going on right now to even play that.

Best Christmas ever was when I got both AoE2 and The Conquerors expansion -- mom admitted she accidentally bought the expansion before the base game.

I got banned from the MSN servers once because i was under 13 playing multiplayer.

The new versions look good but I hate how they merged all the expansions together so i don't know what order to play anymore. I tried transitioning halfway through a playthrough and didn't know which I'd already completed

Doing my annual New Vegas Christmas playthrough. The tradition started in 2017, when I accidentally chose to replay New Vegas during the holidays and had such a good time, that I've decided to try and recreate it every year. At this point, New Vegas gameplay for me is forever associated with Christmas tunes playing softly in an adjacent room, roasted chestnuts and the smell of a Christmas tree. Going on the sixth year of my tradition, I finally chose to do all of the GRA star challenges, which I ignored during the previous runs. So far it is quite fun and adds a whole new layer of planning to the game. To fully realise my plans for the endgame I need a lot of caps so for the first time ever I am actually doing Dead Money for the gold reward at the end. Usually I just do it for the holorifle, which after being fully modded out is the best energy weapon in the game, but this year my eyes are on a bigger prize. Feels a bit sleazy, but it is also supposed to be the standard motivation for your character. I am currently going through the ghost people nest in the church as I finish writing this comment. Wish me luck!

Since there was no door between the two living rooms my family had, I would often hear very well what my parents were watching on their tv while I myself played video games and it would often imprint on my experience. Seyda Neen from Morrowind and the Bison Steve hotel in New Vegas both trigger Columbo episodes in my head whenever I visit these locations in-game. Cheydinhal in Oblivion always triggers the somber “investigation” music from the original Twin Peaks. The Marrakesh level in 2016 Hitman has that new Fargo season with Martin Freeman playing in the back of my head.

Bailed on ds3 and picked up hades, and after 10 runs figured out that i need to point at the enemy to attack in that direction not that zagreus has to be facing that direction at the moment. 17 runs later reached hades but died to him. Good game, fanbase is useless so another Ultrakill situation for me.

The Long Dark. I play some of this Leaf Life Simulator each winter to contemplate the cold. Funded by one of their ministries of propaganda, you can drink jugs of maple syrup to stay alive and they call a knit cap a "toque". Years back I played the first episode or two of storyline mode and since then I've played the freeform survival mode waiting for them to finish the whole storyline, maybe next winter.

I appreciate the stylized, bordering on impressionist visual style, and especially the attention paid to weather. I like a game where your ability to see shit is important, here you have vision obscured by fog, snow, or moonless or underground darkness. In pic it's foggy and I can only navigate by following that road, if a wolf chases me off the road or something, then I'm lost.

I didn't get much time to play video games last week, but I've had a bit more time this week!

I've been continuing to pick up where I left off with Skyrim, and have now finished the Dark Brotherhood quests, in addition to the main quest. I was surprised at how quickly the main quest wrapped up - from capturing Odahviing to defeating Alduin is pretty much one straight shot. I also did the Companions questline, but it was pretty short and all told I rushed through it because I didn't like being a werewolf! :marseywerewolf:

This leaves me with just the civil war and a few side quests to finish up, before I do the Dragonborn DLC and finish the game in its totality. So far I've clocked in an embarrassing 300 hours over 5 years with this save, and the crazy thing is I kinda want to do it all over again.

But instead, perhaps I will finally go to the effort of modding Oblivion to the point where it's playable today. I did actually get most of the way there with that project like maybe 7 or 8 years ago, but there was still stuff to do. What I never got round to doing was changing the terrible leveling system, by which I mean both that leveling your skills was completely counterintuitive and that past a certain level, every random bandit would be running around with top-tier gear.

Other than that, I've played a little Assetto Corsa since there have been some pretty interesting mods drop recently (some 90s touring cars and 60s sports cars) - and I played some more Forza Horizon 5 and Anno 1800 with my friends. The difficulty in Forza Horizon 5 seems super uneven, but at least on this go around we didn't have terrible network problems like last time.

Wanna get back to RimWorld as soon as I get a big block of free time, perhaps over the Christmas holiday. But I've got a few other things I really want to check out too.

I'm probably like 30-40% through Rogue Trader. I am pleasantly surprised by the writing so far. I think it's owlcats best written gameso far, at least as far as dialogue is concerned.

The combat is little more meh. The systems work fine, but all the combat encounters seem too similar to eachother. There's way less enemy diversity compared to their pathfinder games.

Still, definitely one of the best RPGs I've played this year

THE FINALS is a really interesting game and it's weird to even be talking about it because I generally hate modern AAA multiplayer games, and THE FINALS is a really unfortunate case of a great game wrapped in awful packaging. :marseyreading:

The game itself looks, sounds and even feels generic at first glance (free to play battle royale gameshow with quirky humor and colorful characters!!! so original!! :marseysoyswitch:) but mechanically it's actually quite unique in the multiplayer space.

First off, it's not a battle royale or extraction shooter, it's (3v3v3) or (3v3v3v3) depending on the gamemode. Objectives in the gamemodes generally revolve around a device you have to get to and use, like a drop point or cash box, etc. The interesting part comes in when you realize:

  • Objectives are physics objects that can be moved

  • Nearly the entire map is destructible, so you could blow up the floor under and objective to move it

  • The environment contains other physics object that interact in interesting ways that you can shoot or pick up with your HL2 gravity gun - as an example there's a bunch of elemental barrels that contain fire, smoke, Prey-style goop, toxic gas, etc. - these interact in a multitude of interesting ways, such as fire burning goop walls, smoke putting out fire, etc.

  • There are character cowtools you can utilize like placable turrets, ziplines, jumppads and many varieties of grenades (and a bunch of other cowtools ranging from overpowered to totally useless) - placing a jumppad for example can actually catapult the objective, a grenade, a player, a chunk of wall, a goop barrel, etc.

To avoid more :marseylongpost:, I'll summarize by saying it feels like fast-paced like Apex/Titanfall and highly dynamic like an Arkane game (Like Prey or Dishonored - not their new shit) with what I'd call light immersive-sim elements. :marseysoylentgrin:

It's free to play with all of the usual battle-pass shit - thankfully you don't have to spend a cent and you start with most of the best items already unlocked.

Highly recommended to try out (if you have two friends that are also interested, soloing this game SUCKS) before the game inevitably dies in a few weeks because it looks generic as frick in an over-saturated market. :marseydepressed:
