I'm convinced that rdrama has shit taste. Try to prove me wrong - Planescape: Torment
This week's entry will be Planescape: Torment
A CRPG set in the Dungeons & Dragons setting of Planescape in which The Nameless One, an immortal amnesiac, sets off on a quest across the infinite Planes and gathers a party of conflicted companions to find out who he is and reclaim his mortality. Throughout it, he faces the consequences of the horrors he committed in his past lives and tries to find the root of all the torment plaguing his companions and the Planes.

Torment is one of the best-written games of its era and arguably still is, with Disco Elysium being the only real competitor. It is also the first time Avellone used his “amnesiac progresses through the game by picking up pieces of his former self” trope so it is still fresh. He would later re-use it for KOTOR II, Lonesome Road in New Vegas and Prey (2017), to the point that it is comical. It is a great plot the first time around, especially since you have to follow-up on multiple of your former selves with each having a distinct personality and a tie-in to the various characters or locations in the game
One of the better depictions of Sigil in media, although it is purposefully hard to envision without conceding to the limitations of your chosen medium
Seeps with ‘90s aesthetics and humour, similarly to the original Fallouts. Has plenty of raunchy sexual content - the Avellonian specialty. Includes a self-insert by the maestro himself, as a wizard who turned himself into a wardrobe in a brothel, just to get his
handsehh drawers on the panties of all the working girls at the establishment. Can perpetually sniff any article of clothing put inside of himselfA great game that is perhaps weighted down by the real time combat aspect of the Infinity Engine. Unlike the original Baldur's Gates or Icewind Dales, you don't get a full party until mid game, so early encounters can absolutely btfo anyone who doesn't know what they are doing
The isometric graphics are nice, but I always thought they aged worse than the Baldur's games or the original Fallouts. I think the character models are bulkier and occupy more space, so you can see the imperfections more clearly
Soundtrack is made by Mark Morgan, who is a hack that managed to fly under the radar due to games not being treated as serious media in late ‘90s. Not much to tell, as there were clearly fewer directions given in comparison with the Fallout soundtrack, so it was harder to get “inspired”. The stand outs are the brothel and the festhall themes, as they cut right through the standard ambience.
