Game to Discuss?

Being that there's no FOTW to discuss, let's go back to the "classics," insofar as "classic" means Heroes of the Storm - Blizzard's late entry into the ASSFAGGOTS MOBA genre, full of fanservice, designed to turn goodwill and nostalgia into sweet cash.

For what I've been playing lately, it's mostly been minecraft. M$ is a garbage dev, and they've totally failed to improve the game in any meaningful way, but it's hard to frick it up when the core product is so good. Also been playing Civ 6, it's not as good as V, and I still haven't really figured out how to deal with the cities, but I digress. Also more Vicky III. FYI @Losercel I did update the post including all the <details>, so you should be good to work off of this if you make next week's post.

I don't like the new enormous caves, which is ironic, as I was one of many asking for a Cave Update back in 2012/13. I have spent so much time trudging through the tight and claustrophobic caves of older versions, that they became synonymous with the game in my mind. Now all of the expansive caves feel too big and out of place. I wouldn't mind if they were a rare occurrence, which would be pretty cool, but any natural cave system I find eventually leads into a giant space, which would require a stack of torches to light and as soon as I finish cleaning out the resources I take a peek down a tunnel and find an even larger space. It just gets annoying and loses its charm. It's gotten so bad with my Minecraft boomerism, that after trying out the new versions I just immediately retreat back to 1.5 and somehow keep having fun playing it. It's like some nostalgia-induced paralysis I have with this game.

I like the caves tbh, just wish there was more to them. The real problem I have is how content light every update is. Like they added copper ~3 updates ago, and only now are we getting some more decorative blocks to use with it, which is nice, cause there's way too much of it to use for anything else. Also the illager patrols tilt me to no end.

Yeah, there's mods ofc, but right now I'm in realm prison, and it's more demonstrative of Microsoft's general inaction towards making it into a satisfying vanilla experience.

Yeah, 1.12 was the last great update.

At this point modders keep the fricking game alive better than anything, I am hoping a fricking few stick it out pre-1.19 for a fricking while on 1.16 or 1.18. The fricking fact that all your chat goes to Microsoft on 1.19+ for moderation is fricking nuts.

Civ 6, it's not as good as V, and I still haven't really figured out how to deal with the cities, but I digress.

It takes some getting used to, but you generally just have to place cities farther apart and plan ahead where districts and wonders are gonna go.

Unless you meant attacking, then the rule is to try to bleed the AI out of units away from city defenses then move in to take it. tbh it's been so long since I've played Civ V that I forget what the combat really feels like there.

Yeah really the building side of things is my issue. Like I don't know how important adjacency bonuses are for example, and the way siege units were changed to be supporting units doesn't make much sense to me.

Check the Civipedia. It lists all adjacency bonuses for each district.

Siege units, like battering ram, lets you bypass walls, so the defense is much lower. When they get some tech for bigger walls, battering ram becomes obsolete, so you need to use the siege tower to bypass the walls. You can still build trebuchets and whatever to bombard cities and units.

If you got 2 districts next to each other, and place a third to "connect" them, they each get +1 or +2 adjacency bonus. It really builds over time. Trying pairing Dams with Workshops too, since it gives them +2 production. If you got a dam next to some strategic resource like iron, it should yield +3 or +4 adjacency bonus.

Adjacency bonuses will make or break you (well, it's AI, so it'll just take longer to kill them all). Go for minimum +3 to +4, such as library/research district placed among a bunch of mountains. You can then use those policy cards that give you a +50% bonus for all cities that have +4 adjacency bonus for specific districts. It's nice to activate those cards when you want to crank out an army, upgrade it, or push out a bunch of buildings.

Movement rules and adjacency bonuses (board game autismo from famous board game neurodivergent ed beach) really makes 6 a slog compared to V.

Yeah, and social techs tree, that's shit too. And the social cards, another board game min-maxing mechanic that slows the game down.

How does it slow it down? I've never had to "min-max." Pretty much all my cities generalize in everything, and I still kill it.

:marseyagreefast:

On whatever's the highest setting. Deity, right? @Ubie is generally gunning for research and production, with finance as a close second. It depends on the nearby resources and what's happening at that time. Technically, @Ubie's six main cities will "specialize," but they all have military districts, with the workshop, and either research or finance. @Ubie ignore faith, and culture @Ubie usually grab when taking @Ubie's 3rd or 4th civ.

@Ubie do this so that all six cities can crank out a larger army at the same time. It's weird not having a military district for this kind of city, but it makes sense for crappy cities on the fringe.

:marseyshrug:

Maybe that's "min-max'ing," but @Ubie haven't read a strategy guide on Civ since the second one. People are dumb and overcomplicate things.

The adjacency bonus things are just experience. Mountains are good for holy sites and campuses. If you have any coastal reefs, they're really good for campuses - each one is +2, so if there's two next to each other along the coast you can get +4 from those alone.

Even though harbors grant landlocked cities access to water, you normally want to build along the coast anyways, because IIRC you get +2 housing from the harbor if it's next to your city. Maybe it's +2 from a lighthouse instead, either way basically the same.

The best use cases for adjacency bonuses are (IMO):

  • harbors: seaports give production equal to adjacency, and there's a policy card that doubles it, so if you start with +5 bonus on a harbor now it's giving +10 production, like a super factory

  • holy sites: the Work Ethic belief gives production equal to adjacency, and there's a policy card that doubles it as well, so if you can pair it with high-adjacency stuff (ie tundras with Dance of the Aurora pantheon), you can turn your holy sites into factories, and you don't even need to build any buildings in them for this

"Siege units" are like catapults and stuff, not support units. They're basically just archers (ranged units) except they get +power against cities/districts and -power against units. (Archers get the opposite - don't try assaulting a city with crossbowmen, they get like -17 power for attacking the fortification.) The later ones can't move and attack in most cases (there's a promotion to remove this).

If you mean stuff like siege towers, those supporting units can frankly be ignored for the most part unless you're building a strategy around them. If you're busting down city walls with catapults you don't need them. They're mostly useful if your civ has something like an OP special melee unit and you want to build your whole army around it rather than having a standard siege-based army. An exception to this are the mid-/late-game observation balloon and drone support units, they give +1 range to siege units which as you can imagine is really good (I think they might give indirect fire as well, I forget). I rarely use any other support units, they're just not that good and most of the bonuses to building/purchasing combat units doesn't apply to them which sucks.

Ah. So can you take cities earlier in the game (ie ancient era)? Or do you need to wait for medieval for city conquering?

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Early game you can kind of rush them. It's tricky on higher difficulties because the AI gets a decent head start. They're also not dumb - if you start being aggressive they pretty rapidly build walls, and when walls are completed the city instantly gets the full effect of walls so if they finish mid-conquering it's annoying. So you have to really commit to it, or just get lucky (special units etc).

Mid game you can pick off frontier cities without walls pretty easily. Walls cannot be purchased with gold so it's always going to take a bit of time to build them, even if you rush them (which usually isn't advisable, unless you're doing something cheeky like building a forward city right up the AI's butt to bait it). Note: there IS a city state that lets you purchase city center improvements with faith, you can use that to purchase walls with faith, which is actually absurdly OP and pairs excellently with the Monarchy gov.

Late game all cities get "urban defenses" which basically means all cities have walls as soon as they're built (existing cities get them too). You can still destroy the walls w/ siege units like normal. Usually by this point you'd have large enough armies that some city defenses won't stop you.

okay I suspect my problem is that I was teching like an r-slur, then.

E: In Civ V, a lot of wonders required X building to be built in all your cities. Is that still a mechanic?
