Game to Discuss?

Since the rdrama fortress received another update this week (please check it out in this link 008: Mostibkun, "Orangecat" - an rDrama succession fort: Chapter 8, "Adamantine"), we will discuss Dwarf Fortress this week:

Dwarf Fortress

In this complex construction/management/roguelike simulation, every generated world brings a unique challenge, whether it's dwarves with their own simulated personalities or aquifers. Observe what makes your civilization fall into eventual decline, and learn for next time… until something else inevitably goes wrong. The combat model includes skills, body parts, material properties, aimed attacks, wrestling, pain, nausea, various poison effects, and much more. It's difficult to convey the depth of the generation. Hundreds of animals and monsters, many of which are randomly created for each world, as well as generated poetry, musical forms, instruments, and dances for your dwarves to practice and perform. A dynamic weather model tracks wind, humidity, and air masses to create fronts, clouds, storms, and blizzards. Over two hundred rock and mineral types can appear, in their proper geological environments.

Started Yakuza 0 last week upon my sister's recommendation. Completely slated my desire to play the foiddew valley 1.6 update.

Can't believe I hadn't played this game series sooner. Absolutely loving it and the ability to switch between fighting and stupid bowling/arcade minigames.

I love the Yakuza series but by the end of each one I'm pretty tired of beating up random goons in the street and just ready for the convoluted story to wrap up. Also, I love how many of the characters, especially in 0, were played by guys who'd had a long career playing yakuza characters in movies.

Finished all of Skyrim's achievements, so I set out for new horizons. I saw that the Stalker trilogy got ported on consoles, which struck me as incredibly funny, considering how often those games sit on PC Master Race lists. As a fan of torturing myself, as evident from my obsession with Bethesda games, I chose my first time with Stalker to be on console, despite owning the trilogy on GoG for years and never booting them up.

Already finished SoC and I can definitely understand why these games are beloved by many. The atmosphere of desolate post-soviet living is really strong and the various groups trying to make something out of the terrible situation has a certain charm to it. The shooting is fun, although I am playing on vanilla and apparently it is one of the first things people mod out, so I guess I am in a minority yet again.

Currently finished the swamps in Clear Sky, so can't say much about the game yet. Some things they changed I like, the others I already miss. The ratings board was a nice thing to waste some time over as your character is catching their breath after a long run and it pleased one of the neurodivergent parts of my brain quite nicely, so I am sad to see it go. The nights are also way darker than they were in the first game, realistically so. Now roving packs of dogs are an even larger threat, as you might not see them before too late.

Dwarf Fortress was a lighting in a bottle, which was kept in for so long that it began to fizzle out. It feels like Rimworld has unironically taken over in popularity both in mainstream and niche spaces. Easier to learn and mod, I assume, but also more comprehensible. After a while of reading the epic Dwarf Fortress sagas, you begin to notice how about 40% of what happens in them is player head-canon and rationalisation of what happened, as the game didn't telegraph or even mention what truly took place.

I'm playing Tunnet, an extremely neurodivergent game about network packet routing. You dig underground tunnels to build your own internet between a series of buried bomb shelters. Figuring out how to connect all the shelters to each other in an efficient way that minimizes packet loss is an enjoyable puzzle in the managing chaos and cleaning up your own messes genre. You have to optimize your network around the different characteristics of each subnet's traffic so that, for example, you don't have a big clog of outbound traffic that prevents packets from getting through, sensitive data doesn't get sent to the wrong endpoint, packets with a limited number of times you can check their characteristics get where they're going without degrading, etc. Unfortunately the game is programmed in Rust so you do have to choose your pronouns, and there are minor jumpscare horror elements that just detract from the experience. You can turn the horror monsters off, and I recommend doing so. A solid 7/10, worth it considering it only costs 8 maplebucks. You should play on the steam beta branch as it has several important quality of life features such as different cable colours.

Lots of gaming this week for me, too lazy to write actual reviews.

Finished:

  • Tyranny (18 Hours): Cool premise, good factions, good execution of its content, fights and combat are a bit boring, a bit too hard imo, lots of useless features (spires + crafting??), companions whatever, seems unfinished as the game ends somewhere in the middle of a larger act, cool concepts, typical words worsd words dialogues and lore, I'll give it a 7.

  • Pentiment (11.5 Hours): Plays and feels like a VN, very good premise, decent execution, gripping narrative in the first two acts, however overstays its welcome a lot during the last act, very weird tonal shifts, lots of unnecessary shit in this, especially conversations about (i) nothing or (ii) things you already know, not sure if that was intended, another "choice-heavy" game where your choices literally don't matter, at least no religion = bad, well somewhat, I'll give a low 7.

Playing:

  • Tactics Ogre (13 Hours): Much of the same as previous week. Level cap is r-slurred doe.

  • DMC 3 (5 Hours): Killed Leviathan and the Succubus boss. Will probably finish this week.

Next:

  • Final Fantasy 8: It's about time honestly.

  • Catherine: Will play after finishing DMC 3 as I always play one controller + one mk game.

Quit CS2 because valve is r-slurred and my friends switched to Valorant or PUBG - both of which I dislike.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Pentiment has a really clear theme of understanding your roots and keeping in touch with your history, which is a niche predominantly occupied by bipoc (non-slur) narratives today, since either whitey directly disturbed their ancestors' lives, or they had to adapt to whitey's culture and shed some of their own culture in the process. It is incredible how it got made today and if not for Sawyer and a few other writers having actual history degrees I don't think they could justify it to the execs at Obsidian either. You can still tell how the messaging is tainted, as when the young girl (Magdalene?) in the third act is talking about ancestors and how important their ways of living are to us today, you can tell how this is not really about German pagans and their rituals.

The local priest's main crime being obscuring the past and hiding the truth from the people, so much so that he is willing to kill over it, reeks of the still unproven mass graves in Canadian residential schools and the overall idea of powerful structures erasing and hiding the history of minorities throughout the centuries. It's not as forward as I am making it out to be, but you can definitely feel the tone and the message being slightly irrelevant/inconsistent with what is shown throughout the game.

I believe it started out as a real passion project about a quiet town in the HRE going through the troubles of reformation and it slowly acquired the “much-needed” messaging down the line, when diversity consultants noted that the product isn't saying truth to power and challenging our worldview enough. Maybe I am just too cynical, as I agree with the premise that knowing your and your people's history is quite important, but I felt those tonal shifts as well and can't help but feel the long hand of modernity is stirring the pot.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Pentiment is fascinating because you can tell that they had to check the diversity boxes (gay/black/disabled/women/barbarism), but they actually managed to check all of them in a halfway historically appropriate way.

https://i.rdrama.net/images/1711600894791938.webp

The message about the importance of differing interpretations of history is very welcome and more mature than most games, although that particular point is a little out of place in its setting. Modern historians think this way about the Reformation, people at that time didn't talk about it directly like that. Similarly, if you look at the elaborate descriptions of food during dinner scenes, that feels very modern historian.

Most important though, Pentiment is a game of :!marseysoypoint: where my knowledge of history and Latin, German and French is suitably rewarded.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

>differing interpretations of history

I agree that it is a great thing that helps us get an idea of the potential reality of past events as well as an explanation of various customs and beliefs.

As you mention, setting it in that time period and especially in HRE is what makes it feel slightly fake. Not only did the people of the region didn't think or partake in this process back during the Reformation years, but neither do modern Germans/Austrians yearn to or benefit from learning and comparing the plural interpretation of their roots. I can't speak for the rural folk, who might still be religious, but the average city dweller of these nations is already pretty removed from their 16th century ancestors beliefs-wise, maybe even more than those ancestors themselves were from their pagan forefathers. Religion had lost its grip and instead of seeking for local and perhaps ancient traditions to revert to or adapt, modern people are erecting new gods and forming new beliefs in the post-modern hellscape of today.

The message speaks more profoundly to those people who are less-removed from their traditions, or who are from cultures that haven't undergone through cultural upheavals that tried to re-contextualise or demonize their history, like most of European nations did from the French Revolution and onwards.

Can't say anything about the boring part, you either like it or you don't, but Tyranny is a game that's really front-loaded in terms of difficulty. Taking the first spire is absolutely brutal, but by the end of the game you're so overpowered you can just breeze through everything.

I've been playing Dragon's Dogma 2. My PC is powerful enough to deal with the performance issues, and the microtransaction stuff is completely invisible. The main problem, as it happens, is that the game just isn't very good. Pretty bummed since that was the only game I'm looking forward to this year.

Its shortcomings are put in more stark relief by the fact that I'm continuing to play through Elden Ring using the seamless co-op mod with my friend and that game is really, really good. Although the coop mod trivializes parts of the game, I am however surprised how quickly we're breezing through it. We killed Radahn on our second attempt tonight. I'm hoping we can get through the entire thing before the DLC drops in late June.

I've also been playing through StarCraft 2's campaigns on my laptop and it also continues to be a very good game, although right now I'm on the Protoss mini-campaign in Wings of Liberty, which I found a bit boring compared to the rest. I'm hoping to finish up WoL soon so I can move on to the later campaigns.

Other than all of the above, I really want to finish up my run of RimWorld before the new DLC and I want to get back into the swing with Assetto Corsa. I've been spending a lot of my downtime making skins for it recently.

The first few encounters in dragons dogma are fun, but then it quickly sets in that the gameplay isn't going to change for the rest of the experience. It also feels low skill and you're just spamming the attack button over and over.

The game peaked when you fight the first cyclops and you watch it lose its balance which is pretty cool, but beyond that, it gets so repetitive

Finally won a game of civ VI on the vanilla ruleset. Alexander declared war on me (Kongo) when I out teched him, then proceeded to refuse surrender, so I ended up removing him. Two civs worth of cities made for a very easy cultural victory, though it felt pretty cheap. Now to play with the expansion rulesets.

Otherwise, I finally convinced my friends to get DRG, so playing lots of that, and Fallout New Vegas, which doesn't run vanilla on my now, so I installed an extensive set of mods and it works better than ever. Lastly, I've been playing Sixty Four, a rather unique take on the clicker genre.

It was really nice to return to Timberborn after new patch. Some people complain about badtides but for me they greatly improve the game by adding another danger other than droughts. Working around them was engaging.

I played the beaver game when it came out and there was nothing to do. Is this still true?

Depends on what you mean.

There is no goal othar than survival, so it's one of those games where you need to set one for yourself (maybe on hard it's actually hard to stay alive, so it may be different) and that works for some and for others it doesn't.

I try to research everything, build every production chain, and that's fun enough for me (I don't have high standards for city builder games).

Well yeah.

I meant there's nothing to do once you have established a settlement. It doesn't have the necessary depth to make it fun.

That's every colony builders problem. Once you reach a point that you aren't struggling they lose their hook and fun. Even really good ones like Banished have the same problem

How is timber born now? I enjoyed it previously but it did feel light in the danger aspect.

Hard for me to say since I'm quite a casual player, playing it on normal.

The baditides I mentioned are an extra challenge where instead of no water you have to deal with shit water that kills crops and gives beavers cancer.

So the danger and challenge aspects are better, but I wouldn't say it's a drastic change (despite what incessant whining you can read on Steam Forums where people complain that it's super hard now, it's not).

Beat dino crisis

Dropped olliolli world because despite being good the stage goals got really insane 2/3s through the game basically ruining the game for me

Dropped strange horticulture halfway through too repetitive but okay game

Beat Pokemon Uranium fun

Beat bloodstained curse of the moon 1, good call back just as frustrating as castlevania 1

Beat pokemon flower jam a 3 hour fan game where only flower pokemon exist with 5 fakemon including a cool grass dragon which of course i named weedragon.

unicorn overlord switch emulator

Unicorn overlord isn't getting much buzz because it's only on consoles atm but it's basically tactical game of the century. More or less ogre battle but with kino high quality sprites inspired by fire emblem. This game has like 60 classes. I've been playing for like 16h and I'm only 25% done according to map completion. You can hire more of the same unit and just as an example be all wyvern riders or swordsman or beefyboys or thieves if you really want. You can even pick their voices, colors and name. It's kinda sick ngl. Also there's no real point but you can execute your enemies instead of telling them to join you. You get money but the unit is always better than that. I assume it's just a roleplay thing since no one has discovered any genocide run secrets. But yes genocide and replacing them with hired mercs is basically a hard mode genocide run any% speedrun category probably.

Also the voice acting is top notch. This game is shockingly good.

In a dark fiber cable, cool memes in the air

Warm smell of mtn dew , rising up from my hair

Up ahead in the distance, I saw a couple chuds

My eyes grew heavy and my DC grew light

I had to stop for the night

There krayon (sister toucher) stood in my DMs

I saw the little red bell

And I was thinking to myself

"This could be marsey or this could be heck"

Then they lit up that soyboy and they showed me the gays

They were flaming up and down the board

I thought I heard them say

Welcome to the homosexual :marseytrain: cat site

Such a lovely place (Such a lovely place)

Such a lovely face

Plenty of room at the gay :marseytrain: dating cat site

Any time of year (Any time of year)

You'll find festive our cheer

Her mind is stuck on the dogpill, she got the marsey41 loaded up

She got a lot of big butt neckbeards she calls simps

How they screech in her comments, begging for a tap

Some beg for attention, some beg to forget

So I called up Aevann

"Please bring me my awards."

He said, "We haven't had that discount here since October 24th"

And still those chuds are flaming from far away

Wake you up in the middle of the day

Just to hear them say

Welcome to the homosexual :marseytrain: cat site

What a nice surprise

I only saw goatse twice

UwUs on my haters

The Olde english on ice

And he said "We are all just visitors here, on your own device"

And in the Jannie groomercord

They gathered for the beast

They stab it with their ban awards

But they just can't kill the OGs

Last thing I remember

I was doxxing chtorr

I had to find the passage back to the clique I was in before

"based," as the moon man says

"We are programmed to hate,

You can log out any time you like

But you can never delete!"
