Game to Discuss?
Since the rdrama fortress received another update this week (please check it out in this link 008: Mostibkun, "Orangecat" - an rDrama succession fort: Chapter 8, "Adamantine"), we will discuss Dwarf Fortress this week:
Dwarf Fortress
In this complex construction/management/roguelike simulation, every generated world brings a unique challenge, whether it's dwarves with their own simulated personalities or aquifers. Observe what makes your civilization fall into eventual decline, and learn for next time… until something else inevitably goes wrong. The combat model includes skills, body parts, material properties, aimed attacks, wrestling, pain, nausea, various poison effects, and much more. It's difficult to convey the depth of the generation. Hundreds of animals and monsters, many of which are randomly created for each world, as well as generated poetry, musical forms, instruments, and dances for your dwarves to practice and perform. A dynamic weather model tracks wind, humidity, and air masses to create fronts, clouds, storms, and blizzards. Over two hundred rock and mineral types can appear, in their proper geological environments.

Lots of gaming this week for me, too lazy to write actual reviews.
Finished:
Tyranny (18 Hours): Cool premise, good factions, good execution of its content, fights and combat are a bit boring, a bit too hard imo, lots of useless features (spires + crafting??), companions whatever, seems unfinished as the game ends somewhere in the middle of a larger act, cool concepts, typical words worsd words dialogues and lore, I'll give it a 7.
Pentiment (11.5 Hours): Plays and feels like a VN, very good premise, decent execution, gripping narrative in the first two acts, however overstays its welcome a lot during the last act, very weird tonal shifts, lots of unnecessary shit in this, especially conversations about (i) nothing or (ii) things you already know, not sure if that was intended, another "choice-heavy" game where your choices literally don't matter, at least no religion = bad, well somewhat, I'll give a low 7.
Playing:
Tactics Ogre (13 Hours): Much of the same as previous week. Level cap is r-slurred doe.
DMC 3 (5 Hours): Killed Leviathan and the Succubus boss. Will probably finish this week.
Next:
Final Fantasy 8: It's about time honestly.
Catherine: Will play after finishing DMC 3 as I always play one controller + one mk game.
Quit CS2 because valve is r-slurred and my friends switched to Valorant or PUBG - both of which I dislike.

Pentiment has a really clear theme of understanding your roots and keeping in touch with your history, which is a niche predominantly occupied by bipoc (non-slur) narratives today, since either whitey directly disturbed their ancestors' lives, or they had to adapt to whitey's culture and shed some of their own culture in the process. It is incredible how it got made today and if not for Sawyer and a few other writers having actual history degrees I don't think they could justify it to the execs at Obsidian either. You can still tell how the messaging is tainted, as when the young girl (Magdalene?) in the third act is talking about ancestors and how important their ways of living are to us today, you can tell how this is not really about German pagans and their rituals.
The local priest's main crime being obscuring the past and hiding the truth from the people, so much so that he is willing to kill over it, reeks of the still unproven mass graves in Canadian residential schools and the overall idea of powerful structures erasing and hiding the history of minorities throughout the centuries. It's not as forward as I am making it out to be, but you can definitely feel the tone and the message being slightly irrelevant/inconsistent with what is shown throughout the game.
I believe it started out as a real passion project about a quiet town in the HRE going through the troubles of reformation and it slowly acquired the “much-needed” messaging down the line, when diversity consultants noted that the product isn't saying truth to power and challenging our worldview enough. Maybe I am just too cynical, as I agree with the premise that knowing your and your people's history is quite important, but I felt those tonal shifts as well and can't help but feel the long hand of modernity is stirring the pot.

Pentiment is fascinating because you can tell that they had to check the diversity boxes (gay/black/disabled/women/barbarism), but they actually managed to check all of them in a halfway historically appropriate way.
The message about the importance of differing interpretations of history is very welcome and more mature than most games, although that particular point is a little out of place in its setting. Modern historians think this way about the Reformation, people at that time didn't talk about it directly like that. Similarly, if you look at the elaborate descriptions of food during dinner scenes, that feels very modern historian.
Most important though, Pentiment is a game of
where my knowledge of history and Latin, German and French is suitably rewarded.

I agree that it is a great thing that helps us get an idea of the potential reality of past events as well as an explanation of various customs and beliefs.
As you mention, setting it in that time period and especially in HRE is what makes it feel slightly fake. Not only did the people of the region didn't think or partake in this process back during the Reformation years, but neither do modern Germans/Austrians yearn to or benefit from learning and comparing the plural interpretation of their roots. I can't speak for the rural folk, who might still be religious, but the average city dweller of these nations is already pretty removed from their 16th century ancestors beliefs-wise, maybe even more than those ancestors themselves were from their pagan forefathers. Religion had lost its grip and instead of seeking for local and perhaps ancient traditions to revert to or adapt, modern people are erecting new gods and forming new beliefs in the post-modern hellscape of today.
The message speaks more profoundly to those people who are less-removed from their traditions, or who are from cultures that haven't undergone through cultural upheavals that tried to re-contextualise or demonize their history, like most of European nations did from the French Revolution and onwards.

Impressive. Normally people with such severe developmental disabilities struggle to write much more than a sentence or two. He really has exceded our expectations for the writing portion. Sadly the coherency of his writing, along with his abilities in the social skills and reading portions, are far behind his peers with similar disabilities.

Can't say anything about the boring part, you either like it or you don't, but Tyranny is a game that's really front-loaded in terms of difficulty. Taking the first spire is absolutely brutal, but by the end of the game you're so overpowered you can just breeze through everything.
