Game to Discuss?

With carp probably never coming back to rdrama :marseyitsover:, we can now safely discuss his favorite game: No Mans Sky. While rightly found lacking on release, with it's Todd :toddhowardberserk: challenging levels of pre-release hype, it never the less managed to turn into something a little more worthwhile after many enormous updates, to the point where some people find it enjoyable. Include your own opinions below in the pinned comment.

I tried playing it for the first time recently and it seemed to be too focused on resource collection grind so I played something else.

I wasn't dumb enough or plugged in enough to buy it on release, so I don't have any strong feelings about its comeback. I've never found it especially fun, though, excepting that brief thrill whenever you set down on some new exotic planet. The actual gameplay loop is beyond tedious. You could compare its mundanity to that of minecraft, but minecraft lets you have the occasional thrill, of breaking through a wall and stumbling into some new forbidden cave. Overall, I expected little, and was still disappointed.

Loop hero was a lot of fun until you broke it by discovering the meta. No clue if it's been rebalanced. I really recommend Last Spell (diff genre, kinda, but similar feel and fun) if you want something turnbased and a bit more tactical

My straggot friends keep making me play fortnite, when I just wanna dive.

Also puttsing with Victoria 3. I love paradox but their games have such a steep learning curve that anything beyond EU4 (which I have 1k hours in) is like college coursework to learn. But so far I'm enjoying Vicky and I think I'm starting to understand enough of it to make a run

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

EU and HOI are the paradox games I don't get, strangely. Everyone seems to think that EU is straightforwards, but it just doesn't make much sense to me. Vicky is awesome though. I'm putting off playing it again til they implement the new ownership mechanics, but it's a pretty incredibly designed game. Fortnite is garbage and I'm liking the hints that it might be getting less popular :marseysalat:

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

People think EU is straightforward after they've played a ton of it, because it kinda is. But you need to have learned all the little systems first and there are so many that it takes forever.

Hoi I don't get at all. I desperately want to but I end up opening it, getting a ton of pop ups, and closing it again

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Eu4 takes like an hour to learn. HOI4 is extremely easy but still better than EU since it as least has some strategy. If you don't get it I think you just have downs syndrome or something. None of it's systems are more than knre deep.

4/5 through ultra moon right now. The SOS hunts are the most fun shiny hunt gimmick i've done which are decent grinding as well. Gotten 6 so far, probably will start Sword or Shield soonish. The game has the worst plot story, for the most part, but the characters are git or miss and a lot of the tiny pieces of random funny dialogue are pretty funny. Overall, not as bad as I was told but there's way too many cutscenes. The removal of HMs kind of has me split, I dislike when you have a water type that ends up only being HMs, but having none makes building a team a bit too easy. I'm not really having to plan around requiring one thing or another, instead I can just have a silly grab bag that clears every thing, which takes away a bit of the difficulty on that end. The battles themselves are a little harder, but it's a rollercoaster of easy fights then suddenly you'll get slapped by something, then easy again.

Also making a lot of progress towards a living dex from this, oddly enough.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

At the very least I'm going to need to do something to make the 3rd-person mouse view more snappy, because the vanilla view is so laggy it gives makes me almost seasick. It's not bad in 1st-person, but I prefer 3rd.

But yeah, I want to do my initial playthrough with as fews mods as possible. Maybe an inventory mod though, at least. Skyrim got me hooked on mods....

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

oh, I never play TES 3rd person, so that wasn't even a thought for me. Just look up a basic leveling guide because if youre level 30 or so and didn't do it properly, you're going to be fricked with how long it takes to kill an ogre or something due to the scaling. inventory is fine, not great, but idk it was fine back in the day

Finished Death Stranding after 105 hours. Didn't expect to enjoy it this much.

Also finished Resident Evil 7 for the second time, but I still need to play all the DLCs. I've tried the Blackjack gamemode and it was pretty fun.

At the moment I'm playing Watch Dogs 1 with a mod that makes the game more fleshed out and an ENB

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

How does the mod flesh WD1 out? Does it improve any of the mechanics?

I always liked the atmosphere and aesthetics of the game and it was a shame that it had to be paired with the ubislop open world philosophy of watchtowers and enemy camps. It has a great neo-noir feel that future titles have unfortunately rejected in its entirety in favour of modern tech-cel culture.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

I've never played the game before so I can't compare it to vanilla, but here are the changes

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

These sound like solid improvements and a portion of them is restored features, which is always nice. WD1 infamously has a lot of cut content up to entire mechanics, like a variety of hacking mini-games instead of the whole game of you being forced to “connect the pipes”. Should definitely check it out, thanks!

... But lately I have been playing Slice & Dice a lot, they came out with a major update that added countless characters, enemies, modes, etc., if you enjoy rougelikes, you will at least enjoy S&D, and IMO it is one of those roguelikes that you can always come back to and have fun, new experiences with, similar to Isaac, Slay the Spire, etc. It is really shaping up to be a top 5 rougelike, definitely check it out if you haven't

Finished:

  • Devil May Cry 3: Good time, a bit easier than expected as I played the HD edition and apparently they downgraded each difficulty level to the next lower one, a lot better than 1 and 2 (lol), liked how they allowed you to backtrack (sometimes even necessary), puzzles a bit too annoying, vergil is one of the easiest bosses here, not much else to say, this must have been great when it came out, gonna skip dmc4 and 5 for the time being, maybe in the future (8/10) final ranking

Playing:

  • Tactics Ogre (~18 Hours): Same as last week, getting into the grindy parts now.

  • Catherine (2 Hours): Puzzles are fun, controls are a bit annoying, sadly this pains me a lot to play as truecels cannot relate...

  • Pathfinder: Wrath of The Righteous (30 Hours): It was about darn time, finished Act 1 and most of 2, and the first DLC (or whichever playing before act 1) and this seems fantastic so far, loving it.

Played some CS matches on another account too - just to shit on kids :marseyxd:

Seems interesting. I've been bouncing on and off of HoMM, it's pretty interesting, though I wish there was something newer in its vein, because the lack of explanations in game makes it rather unapproachable.

I myself have been playing Old World, Civ 6, and Millennia, all vaguely similar civilization building games, hopefully I'll have a more in depth review of all of these in a few months. Old World is definitely the best of them, but there's positive aspects to the others as well. Also been playing Deep Rock, and getting close to my first promotion which is pretty hype. I haven't gotten to play as much hypnospace outlaw as I would have liked, because of all the Civ likes eating up my time, but it's a great game. The last thing I've put any significant time into is Captain of Industry, which is a very unique factorio-like game. I hope the design goes a little harder into the survival city builder direction or the factorio-like direction, because it currently sits in a somewhat painful point between those two genres.

Finished Bloodborne. I'd beat it before but never had the DLC. Honestly not too hard after having played the newer From games. I beat Lady Maria first try, and Orphan took like 5-6. I will say I don't really like the beast bosses at all. Just random flailing and ugly hair effects flying around the screen. The humanoids feel more natural and fun.

I also felt like replaying Kingdom Hearts 1. Charming game, but so far the feel is very dated. Shit camera and you don't get a dodge roll or magic until after the first boss (despite choosing magic as my specialty). Though playing on Proud probably creates some early game issues that didn't exist on Standard.

Guard Armor on Proud is OFFICIALLY harder than Orphan of Kos. Bite me.

I'm legitimately too r-slurred for Fromsoft games. I've played DS3 and Bloodborne, but got filtered out almost immediately. It's a sin to engage with mouse products, and Kingdom Hearts was long outside the zeitgeist by the time I got into gaming, so I legitimately have no idea what they're like. I had thought til now they were turn based RPGs ala Final Fantasy, so I'm not sure what to make of the reference to a dodge roll :slimecurious:

Jump in the discussion.

They're actually some of the first modern style action RPGs.

At the base difficulty level you can generally just mash attack and tank enemy hits. But the highest difficulties require something closer to your standard i-frame action games.

The Mobius Machine. Exploration-focused Metroidvania. Was kind of a mess when it first came out but some updates fixed issues with map navigation and checkpoints and it's far better. Still not sure if I like it yet.
