Game to Discuss?

This week let's discuss Lethal Company. While no longer FOTM, it had a brief but strong period where it seemingly took over the internet (or at least my friend group). In it, you explore abandoned "Moons," searching for random garbage to sell to the eponymous company, while avoiding all sorts of horrifying creatures. Discuss below in the pinned comment.

Lethal company is one of those games where you shouldn't expect to get more than a night or two out of it with friends. To me that's a fine proposal since $20 is impulse buy territory anyways.

Balatro is so much fun, how do you and @Fabrico feel about Slay the Spire? That used to be my go-to game for years til it felt like I played every kinda run I possibly could have

Never thought I was much for card games but I might have to rethink that

I have never played StS funnily enough. I'm not huge on roguelikes tbh. I don't see Balatro as one even though it probably qualifies, I like it because it's more like a classic card game reminiscent of Club House Games (the DS one, not the shitty switch one).

They made it too side quest focused just to extend the play time. The levels aren't really fun like the previous games. There's just a lot extra to do for its own sake.

Kingdom Hearts 1 on Proud. Just made it to Hollow Bastion, which is where shit gets real and you can pretend you're playing a serious game instead of just hanging out with Winnie the Pooh and Ariel (which is what the game's actually about).

Setting aside the later games' terrible writing, the original dynamic between Sora and Riku authentically captures what feels like as a child to be a friends with a boy a couple years older than you. Sora gets teased hard, and (from a child's perspective) borderline humiliated. The player gets to feel this themselves wrestling the stiff controls through the sparring and racing mini games while Riku talks shit. The game lets you lose over and over, you never have to win, and it keeps score. "Aw, man, now the score is 0-4..."

Despite the one-sided rivalry, Riku also represents maturity and greater knowledge, and you can see why Sora would hang out with him.

Then this dynamic gets stretched into the surreal as they get caught up in a world-hopping JRPG plot fighting over a macguffin called "the Keyblade." We see that Riku does value Sora's friendship, and feels hurt when Sora no longer needs him. And even as Sora watches his older friend turn to "the darkness" (smoking weed and ditching him to hang out with girls), Sora does still care about Riku, and ultimately builds to the power to save him, transcending the childlike rivalry. It's not exactly realistic, but it accurately captures some of the feelings of childhood that most adults have forgotten. This kind of charm is what KH1 really excels at.

This dynamic basically disappears after KH1 and you're left with an uncomplicated "we're friends because we're friends and we love each other and our hearts are connected" slop that governs the rest of the series.

Been playing mostly Slice & Dice (roguelike dice game that goes hard af) and Tekken 8 :marseypunching:

Been wanting to pick up Lee Chaolan; I was maining Dragunov, who is good, but neither excellent nor marvelous enough. (really I just want to actually play the game and not be carried)

Playing:

  • Catherine (3 Hours): Somehow I have the feeling that this is one of those games where you actually have to know what happens when in order to guarantee optimal gameplay. It's just a shame that Atlus manages to do this with every game and you always think you're about to miss something. A shame really because the puzzle(s) are fun.

  • WoTR (45 Hours): Unironically fantastic.

  • Alien Breed Impact (1 Hour): Slop shooter so I can watch youtube videos (I won't)

Catherine was fun af, just accept that there's a billion things that influence the ending you get and go watch the ending you want when you're done :marseyshrug:

Seriously, Catherine is the perfect game to get sucked into for a weekend

Finally someone will recognize my profile gimmick :marseycry: (and no, I'm not a huge Catherine fan, I literally just played through it one weekend and it was a MASSIVE vibe)

... Obviously I went for the Qatherine ending :marseyteehee:

Tons of balatro. Been kinda addicted to number going up. Highly recommend, my favourite roguelite since Issac.

Also just finished Control, I really enjoyed it even though it has flaws. If you like SCPshit and brutalism like I do it's a good game. Also finally let me flex real time ray tracing, played pretty well 4k 60fps min on a 4090.

Just started the Talos Principal 2. Fun puzzles & very kino.

It's also a pretty well-done approach to expanding the story and growing a concrete narrative from the "found documents" storytelling of the first 1.5 games without retconning the whole thing.

If you liked Portal 1 & 2, the first Talos Principle game is essentially Portal 2 (FPS physics-based puzzle game with narrative window dressing), except it's about whether machines are capable of achieving sentience rather than endlessly testing in order to satisfy a rogue AI. TTP1 also has a good bit of hidden content and at least 3 different endings.

Been playing 2 as well, it's been pretty good so far but I'm also only half done, tp1 was one of my favourite games of all time. It is just more of the same though so if you're not into the philosophy of the game it's basically just more puzzles with similar rules

Did you also play the Road to Gehenna expansion?

I thought it had such a cool parallel between the puzzles & story: the story is "outside" the original narrative + you have to keep using the space outside of all the individual puzzles and make them work together in order to solve them

Jump in the discussion.

I actually only played the original for the first time very recently so I just decided to wait until 2 came out so I wouldn't get tired of it. Thanks for the recommendation though that actually sounds more like what I was hoping for for 2, I'll add it to my list.

Replays of TTP1 suffer bc the first 2/3 of the game are designed to slowly introduce you to each new game mechanic right when you've just mastered the previous one. The pacing is really excellent, but once you know everything the first few puzzles are no longer interesting or challenging.

Gehenna throws you right into the deep end, assuming you already know how to use all the puzzle cowtools. The story sections you read in the terminals are way more interesting too, and you can see the genesis of a lot of the 'Interface' stuff they introduced in TTP2. In Gehenna there's even an entire text-based RPG you can play in one of the terminals lol

A friend gifted me Helldivers 2. Now I can officially say I do not understand the hype. Much rather play something like The Finals

Halo MCC is in kind of a sad state which sucks. Took me like 15min to find a match the other night

Practicing on iRacing for Sonoma. Some of the tracks on this game look like early 2000s graphics, but the really annoying thing is the tires are like ice before you warm them up which is absolutely infuriating on a track where the first turn is a blind uphill to the right. Half the time it's a spin and restart

And finally my WoW sub is coming up, I cancelled it but I kinda want to actually play SoD. OSRS is fun but it's a point and click game so it's hard to get really into it

Just beat Megaman Legends. It was pretty cool but very rough around the edges. The controls were awful and the "puzzles" were mostly "find the slightly different wall texture". Atmosphere and appealing visuals can do a lot of legwork.

I tried to install my copy of The Crew on Steam to see what would happen, and yeah, it now brings up an "Insert Activation Code" screen, but there is no code. It also says "You no longer have access to this game" in the Ubishit launcher. Pissed. :marseyraging: Gonna pirate their games in the future now.

Otherwise just played a lot of pinball this week, no vidya. The yearly pinball convention was nearby (Pintastic) which is always a lot of fun, drinking and playing all through the night from Thursday night to Sunday morning. The crowd there is always amusing, like 75% middle aged drunk Facebook boomers (me on the left), with the remaining 25% split between normies/families and various flavors of blue hairs and attack helicopters.

Apparently I'm a week late but No Man's Sky, after years of word of mouth about how it is good now.

The same kind of disappointment as Spore, though not quite as disappointing. Someone tell me if the current main storyline was patched in at some point, because trapped in a degenerate collapsing simulation reads almost like an apology for the shallowness.

I'm in the mid point of hollow knight I think. I need more games like this

I still can't win 8 antes in balatro. Even trying to emulate what some videos do doesn't seem to help. It feels like you need to gimmick it from the outset then rebuild the deck until it's all identical cards or some shit but this doesn't sound like the right way to do it. Seriously how do you win?

I've been playing the StarCraft 2 campaigns. I'm on Legacy of the Void right now.

Perhaps the best rts campaigns ever, but man the Protoss are such dorks. Space rednecks are way better, but I think I had the most fun with just endless zergling waves in HotS

I keep thinking about playing imperator Rome. Apparently it doesn't suck any more. I abandoned my only campaign when it came out playing as Syracuse.

Jump in the discussion.

Regarding I:R it was abandoned and I'd say it's not very good. No DLC sales, so not much in the way of overhauls, maybe worth another shot but I doubt it. Play Old World instead.

Starcraft 2 struck me as a game which could have done so much more but had the misfortune of being a sequel to Starcraft.
