Game to Discuss?

This week, let's discuss SpaceChem, Zachtronic's classic zachtronic game. I'm sure with so many :marseyautismchonkertyping: on this site, some of you have played it, and probably either hated it or it furthered you along the path towards a formal autism dianosis, a career in codeceling, and absolutely no b-words. Love spacechem, all the zachtronics puzzle games are good but this one is the best imo. Finally a company that makes actually challenging puzzle games, every other mainstream puzzle game suggestion feels similar skill level where you know the solution within a couple of second of seeing the puzzle. I had some levels on spacechem where I spent an hour coming up with the solution. Gave it only a 9 though because it doesn't have a Solitaire game included

shenzhen io was also really good but feels a lot like an assembly language class. Best solitaire game of all the zachtronics.

I enjoyed this game. I've enjoyed most of zachtronic's games, but I always end up being filtered out halfway through the game, and this one was no different. Still, I would in principle like to go back to this and see if I can't beat more of the puzzles. The difficulty I find is that I dislike putting together inelegant solutions, so in trying to make a good enough solution happen, I fail to actually produce any solution.

Love all the Zachtronics programming games.

Opus Magnum is probably the most mature variant, it gives you infinite space to brute-force solutions but you'll still feel dumb if you do it - and it's the one where it's most satisfying to see your solution run, with the clanking and clicking of your little factory.

But my favorite is Infinifactory; assembling recognizable products appeals to me a bit more than puzzling molecules together, and I like that you've got a 3D space to walk around and build your assembly line in.

(The actual assembly language games, TIS-100, Shenzhen I/O etc filtered me too hard)

Finishing up Kingdom Hearts 1. :marseykey:

Last week I wrote this comment about how the original Sora/Riku dynamic captures the (complex) feeling of being friends with a boy a couple years older than you. The mixture of resentment and admiration. The tension between the warm yet outworn simplicity of childhood, and a "maturity" that's sometimes exciting, sometimes frightening, and may not be maturity at all.

This ties into another aspect of the game. KH1 is also the only game where Disney is really relevant. And no, not because "Maleficent was the bad guy" or "they needed the princesses to blah blah blah." In KH1, Disney is relevant thematically. The use of colorful animated Disney films in a JRPG tie into the conflict between the boyish Sora and the (seemingly) mature, edgier Riku. Disney is, essentially, gay and lame (from the perspective of an older boy insecure about his own coolness). Cool black coats and angst and depression seem more where it's at.

But Sora hangs onto the things of childhood while also growing in strength and bravery, while Riku's edgier persona quickly shows its cracks until he gets replaced by the cartoonishly edgy Ansem, whose "darkness" ultimately becomes far more vacuous and dumb than Sora hanging out with Winnie the Pooh could possibly be.

The game defends the things of childhood, exemplified by Disney, against superficial signs of maturity. Things we may seem to outgrow still have art and value behind them, and when we tire of our demand to be seen as "grown up," the old stories will still be there. We won't see them exactly the way we did as children, but what we see now will be fuller, better, worth sharing with others. While love and friendship can seem like cliches or platitudes, actually following them through to their conclusion is worth spending a life on.

Sure, this theme is deepthroating Disney, and I'm not arguing that the game nails it perfectly, but it's an actual story with characters and a point.

Of course, the later games in the series didn't learn from this at all, and instead they went on to believe that the (child's idea of) dark, mature material was the "good stuff" while the Disney stuff was at most a legacy addition or a weird quirk. You'll notice that the reveal trailer for KH4 depicts no Disney content at all. In the process of trying to create its own "identity," KH turned to the darkness. And the darkness is cringe. :marseyweeb:

I couldn't do this for the other KH games because the stories become detached from anything people feel or do in real life.

Take Roxas, a sort of alternate self to Sora. Roxas must disappear from the world so that Sora can live again. It's pretty sad. But what IS Roxas? Is he the foreign child slave mining cobalt so you can enjoy techslop in peace? Is he the child Sora's mom aborted to focus on her career, allowing Sora to enjoy a privileged yet lonely childhood years later?

Nah. But it's sad that Roxas has to disappear. The end. :marseydisintegrate:

Late to the party, but...

The brief (but glorious) return of Donkey Kong December :diddykongboombox: :dixiekongguitar:...sparked me into brushing off my (lightly used) SNES mini (a generous Thanksgiving gift from a cousin of mine) and check out all the nice games on that console again! :marseyzeldalinkpast: :yoshismallwaddle: :marseykirby2:

TL;DR - I'm playing stuff on my "old" SNES mini, and I wanted to see if anybody here has any reccomendations for me to, uh, :marseyairquotes: "check out" :marseyairquotes:. Any of the fallouts worth playing in 2024?

With everyone hyping up the show may wanna give it a go.

Other “classics” I've never played include Bioshock, MassEffect, Elder Scrolls. Which of the 4 franchises is best to get into first. I have access to all of them through gamepass or having had purchased them on sale through steam.

And I promise this isn't bait I just generally didn't want to be associated with the cute twinks playing these games in high school and college when these games were coming out mid to late aughts.

I just finished FFVII remake and P5R so I need a break from nipshit.

New Vegas is the best, Fallout 4 is decent and more approachable/"modern".

Fallout 2 is also pretty good, though very old and pc exclusive.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

It all depends on what kind of g*mer are you. If you are willing to deal with some jank and outdated design philosophies, then New Vegas is definitely a must play out of the entire franchise, existing as a bridge between the ideas and themes of the first two games and the 3D open world environments of the modern entries. If you think you can handle the isometric perspective, the turn-based combat and a stylised UI, then you can try out the original two games. They blow the modern iterations out of the water in terms of atmosphere, but they do require some time to learn the ebb and flow of the game. Fallout 4 are 76 are more fitting if you don't want to learn a new rpg system and just want to shoot things in a post-apocalyptic setting. They are also the closest to the show in terms of style and visual design.

Elder Scrolls has a similar situation, where depending on how much you are willing to invest into learning the mechanics of the respective game, determines which entry would suit you best. Morrowind is a high peak of the franchise, but is also employs a lot of extremely outdated practices, such as percentage-based hit chance determined from your skills and attributes, lack of fast travel and mostly unvoiced dialogue. If you are willing to look past these elements, Morrowind presents you with a world filled with adventure, intrigue and a lot of weirdness. If you would rather look at nice vistas and hack-and-slash your way through dungeons without wishing to keep lots of numbers in your head, then Skyrim might be a better entry point for you. It is the game most fans of the series started from, even if they trickled back to older entries. Be aware, that most of the lore and stories that the fan community is fascinated with and repeats ad nauseam are mostly from in-game books or the manuals that came with them. The games themselves aren't that esoteric and present rather straightforward stories.

Bioshocks are best played in order of release, although that is just my personal opinion. The first game might look dated today, but I find it the most cohesive and interesting out of the trilogy. The second game was made by a different studio and focused more on the combat aspects of the game, which some fans didn't appreciate. Infinite looks the best, but it is also a mess in terms of storytelling and gameplay after surviving multiple rewrites and concept changes.

Haven't played any of the Mass Effects, but through osmosis I can tell that it is best to just play the first two games and then pretend that the series ended right there. Those games are from an interesting era of rpgs beginning to be designed with consoles (and console players) in mind, so the mechanics are a bit simplified, the graphics look good and there are a ton of voiced characters with lots of dialogue and cutscenes.

I would suggest the order I have given:

Fallout (big right now, latest entries quite accessible) > Elder Scrolls (I find that the gameplay loop from some Fallout games easily bleeds into Elder Scrolls, due to having the same developer) > Bioshock > Mass Effect

It's almost the order of popularity of these franchises, with Fallout being the most recognisable, although my bias and lack of knowledge of Mass Effect may do it an injustice and put it in the last place. Along with Bioshock, I am pretty sure Mass Effect as a franchise is currently on pause, while both Fallout and Elder Scrolls are cash cows that are still being milked and have new games being developed as we speak.

Thanks @Ninjjer for the ping, although it is weird to be put on the spot like this.

I love Mass Effect! It's like playable Star Trek. The focus on developed locations, interesting characters, and choosing your dialogue puts it way above other space games for me. It captures something of the fun about a traditional tabletop RPG run by a creative DM.

I'm kind of meh on Bioshock, but if you're needing something short as a palate cleanser from a bunch of bloated RPGs, it might be a better option. It's a fun, fast-paced, and decently varied experience. ME1 isn't that long, but if you played the whole ME trilogy (which you should) that would take quite a while.

Bioshock Infinite still holds pretty well. 1 and 2 are very dated but they're worth it just for the location, it's probably the most memorable on any game ever.

Playing the Blood remaster by Night Dive

Kinda runs like shit tho, idk what's going on with the kex engine but much newer games like cultic ran way smoother. Still good tho and I'll get the Dark Forces remaster when it's on sale

Finished punch club two, lazy bear makes games that I would not call good, but that I enjoy too much to say they are bad.

Evil West (co-op :marseyangel: ) has been fun. I really like the combos, and the hardest setting is great.

I left my steam deck on an airplane this weekend while traveling because I am a sub-Forest Gump tier r-slur, so I am no longer playing Talos Principle 2, nor am I still replaying MGS1.

I hate almost everything about modern COD games, but I saw the WW2 one they made a few years ago was on sale. I figured if I am r-slurred enough to forget a $700 electronic on an airplane bc I was hungover then I might actually be the target audience for this game.

We'll see. I installed almost 12 hours ago, and still haven't booted it up :marseyshrug:

It's the best game ever. I am 10/10 recommending this game to others

I did actually look it up. So it's roguelike Poker, but unlike the times I've played IRL roguelike poker in Las Vegas, I don't have to worry about being arrested, overdosing or murdered? Sounds comfy

Edit: Well I already spent $19 today on a COD game I know I will hate. I guess I can spare another $14 because a stranger on the Internet told me something was cool

In the tutorial and it kinda feels like a Stardew Valley minigame so far, but I'll wait it out. I like deck builders so I'm along for the ride.

FYI I am currently playing Balatro on a 75" TV while also playing magic arena on my laptop, while also phone posting on ourdrama, so thanks for helping me curate the single most neurodivergent Sunday afternoon of my life so far.

I finished Dragon's Dogma 2 today. If the game in general is one big wet fart, then the ending is the part where you fully shit yourself.

Playing AI: The Somnium Files to help fill the void of having no more Danganronpa or Zero Time Escape games to play. It's alright

Started playing Fashion Police Squad this week. It's honestly a pretty mid game carried by a fun and silly premise but that might be enough for me to see it through. Also beat Mega Man 5 for the first time. Pretty solid entry in the series.

Mostly Factorio, some helldivers when my brain is too fried. I'm trying to do Space Exploration and I think I might be a little too brainlet for it. I finished the base game and had hoped that would be enough, but man is SE stretching me a bit. Granted, I've made it into orbit and started space science, and it's not the individual mechanics so much as the large-scale logistics that are getting to me, so maybe there's hope.
