Game to Discuss?

This week, let's discuss Bethesda's "RPG" Fallout 4. Released in 2015, it has more in common with Skyrim than with earlier games in the Fallout franchise. Previous elaborate dialogue is stripped away, replaced with a simple 4-option response system, and the classical RPG skills system is replaced with a variety of bland perks, which generally provide nothing more than stat bonuses. Despite this radical change in formula, the game was reasonably well received, but I suppose Dramastrags probably hated it, given that they're perpetual contrarians :marseysigh: Ah well. Discuss and voote below in the pinned comment.

Played it at launch and haven't touched it since. I've wanted to reinstall it and play it with some survival mods but I'm not buying the DLC just to do that. I spent a lot of time base building because the main quest/side quests were all pretty shit. I started to get bored of the base building when I realised you never actually got to defend your settlements and all these walls and turrets I was building were useless. Ended my only playthrough by killing Shaun/The Father then uninstalling :marseywholesome:

The problem with settlement defense is that having enough defense makes attacks never happen, instead of rare. If you build right, you will never be challenged.

Ah maybe that was my issue then. I remember resorting to using console commands to spawn Raider armies and seeing how well they would do.

Story is trash, but one of the best looter shooters I've ever played. Love the settlement system, DLC, and crafting. Unironically my favorite Bethesda game in terms of gameplay.

I agree completely. The Survival Mode they added later really ties the gameplay loop together. I think it's one of the most satiafying to play of any looter shooter produced. Consistantly good mechanics, incentive and reward for hundreds of hours.

Story is mid and the RPG elements are laughable.

Unironically my favorite Bethesda game too.

True, Dead Cells is the tits. Games with a similar platformer + combat vibe: Spelunky 1 & 2, Hollow Knight, Blasphemous.

Definitely gonna back up Hollow Knight as well. Fun, challenging, and with great sound + visuals.

Based, its sad the french cute twinks who made this got pissy about evil empire making more content for dead cells and being loved more by the community, that they end up shutting it down because ego and to promote their new game.

I know I'm late to my own thread, but whatever, I had stuff to do. This week I played Sweet Transit, a disappointing transportation game which largely misunderstands why people play transportation games. Hopefully I'll write a proper review of it later this week, but it's likely I won't. Also played a lot of dwarf fortress, and experienced a lot of firsts: had my first siege (I generally settle in distant areas), and actually my fort became the capital. FPS is now hovering in the 50s, but I do have ~200 dwarves now, so it shouldn't decrease much further. Unfortunately, this is tanked by every single baron from the rest of the civilization coming to hang out, which is very annoying. Lastly, I got Fallout 4, and I'm playing through it for the first time. I don't like what Bethesda did to it, with the stripped down dialogue, and extreme gun autism. The settlement building also gets a why? out of ten, it's moderately interesting, probably under detailed, and I don't know why I'd put any time into it, given that it doesn't seem connected to the overarching story, and the inability to do anything really interesting is pretty gay. The random collectibles scattered across the map also don't help, because while they do reward exploration, its just another example of dumb stats autism in a place where it really doesn't belong.

I hadn't heard of Sweet Transit. It's a shame if it's a fail. It's a really cool genre when they actually get it right.

Been playing Spyro on PS1 and hot darn is it a good game. Really tight moveset and neurodivergent collecting (which the game saves at all times) that tickles my brain. Great soundtrack and environment design too. :marseydragon:

As I said I would once I finished up USUm and sorting, here's the legendaries/shinies I've collected (not counting the the one-two (such as both Keldeo forms) of every legendary/mythical sorted into the dex portion of Home. Ignore the Gourgeist, I traded for it and haven't put it in its spot yet.

So far I think I've mostly enjoyed working through all the games I've played (HG, Black, Pearl, Y, OR, Black 2, Sun, and both US and UM. Got 99% of the dex filled in home, which is pretty much just the Sun/Moon and X/Y mythicals (Hoopa, Diancie, Volcanion, Marshadow, Zerora, and whenever I get to using GO, I'll get the free Meltan and Melmetal).

I briefly returned to Starfield, after seeing that Bethesda is planning to drop an update for it around May 15th, which adds quite a lot of quality-of-life improvements that should've been in the game from the start. I thought the awful monotone maps that only show the surface relief of your current planet were a deliberate design choice, harkening back to their analog “NASA-punk” aesthetic they attempted to establish. Now they come out with these colourful and informative maps, which makes me question wether Microsoft rushed the production or if Bethesda seriously thought they can No Man's Sky this by releasing an unpopular beta first and then adding all the logical and nice features down the line as “atonement” instead.

The surface vehicles they teased in the update announcement are also a peculiar thing. On one hand they can make traversing the giant empty spaces of proc-gen planets easier, but they will also make it more obvious how tiny the playable area for the player's landing zone is. Are they going to increase the playable area? If yes, then why was it so restrictive at first? Lots of what I thought were design choices now seem to be just bandaid fixes, which is bewildering considering for how long they were making the game and marketing it as the next step of their design philosophy. Either it was completely remade halfway through (leaks prove this to be false) or they finally understood the true scale of their incompetence and were stuck in a stupor as a result.

Either way, now I have chosen to 100% all of Starfield achievements before the update goes live, so I can proudly beat my chest and proclaim how I did it before the game became “playable” or “good”.

I have spoken at length about Fallout 4 in the past and don't wish to give this game any more of my time.

I've been playing Fallout: New Vegas and Pokemon Colosseum. I picked up my New Vegas playthrough again after finishing the Fallout show. I've just finished Dead Money, incredible DLC. The Vera Keyes "ghost" in the Sierra Madre suites is legitimately one of the creepiest things I've seen in a game. I'm at the end game now pretty much. I have Lonesome Road to do, as well as to the rest of the main quest and that's it. Going to go back to Fallout 1 & 2. Then, maybe, I'll play through Fallout 3 again.

Pokemon Colosseum is my favourite Pokemon game. I go through it every couple of years. It's the only Pokemon game with some semblance of difficulty, and the permanent double battles/no wild pokemon is a fun twist. I'm basically at the end with this as well. I'm at the final colosseum, and I think there's one more dungeon I have to do before I battle the main boss. It's a great game, flawed but still great.

They really should have a ton more doubles in the main games. It's so weird they don't do more than give lip-service to the official competitive format

The new :marseyairquotes: metroidvania :marseyairquotes: that everyone is creaming their jeans about, Animal Well. And so far (~2hrs in) I think it's fine, but I don't get the gush. I'm early but one problem I have so far is it's not really a metroidvania, it's more of a precision/puzzle platformer, and that's not what I was looking for. But maybe combat develops later.

Also a lot of Serious Sam 4. Total boomer shooter goodness with blood, guts, mildly crass humor (it's current year after all! can't be saying anything too risque). And like most boomer shooters, the whole game is strafe, strafe, strafe, and more strafe. But if you like the style (I do) it's fun.
