Game to Discuss?

This week, let's discuss Crusader Kings 3, the sequel to the incredibly popular Crusader Kings 2 (duh). Following up on Crusader Kings 2 was never going to be easy, especially with the mass of DLC the original game had accumulated over its lifespan. Paradox certainly made a valiant attempt, but while some of their more recent fixations (custom religions and cultures) made it into the game, the breadth of neurodivergent obsessions available to players in CK2 was cut down significantly. Personally, I'd say I enjoyed it, but it never really grabbed me the same way CK2 did. Share your own thoughts in reply to the pinned comment.

I had played almost 1k hours :marseynerd2:of ck2 and was really hyped for ck3, but after doing a few multiplayer runs I found I had no desire to play it anymore. I think with ck2 I just played our pretty much any possible scenario so I got bored with the whole idea of the franchise

Same scenario? No new mechanics?

There's a few, especially for religion. But as OP says, they didn't include a lot of features that had been added to ck2 over the years via dlc, so it feels like a way smaller game. The small amount of new stuff just doesn't hold my interest

This is typical Paradox tho. They'll be 20 DLC deep and then release the next generation game with zero of the flavor or improvements from the prior. EU5 is going to be a nightmare.

I had similar feels with the Civilization series. I got to idk IV and didn't wanna play another of those.

IV was great at the time and V was an objective improvement, but VI just felt like an overly stylized reskin and I've had no desire to pick it back up since release

I played it for a while. I think I got through 3 characters or something before getting bored. Paradox games have this specific feel to them, like they feel expansive and deep but at some point you realise you're just map painting.

A lot more accessible than 2 but that comes with a lot of dumbing down too. I felt it from Oblivion to Skyrim, but the people before me felt it from Morrowind to Oblivion. Unfortunate, but it's an inevitability with companies trying to reach the widest market.

They tried it with Vic3 and after it had no real impact since people who cheat just use SAM or pre-made saves or even Cheat Engine they rolled it out to CK3, they will probably do it for every new game.

i can't explain enough how i feel about bethesda vs rockstar

I played through FO3/NV/4, then moved to Read Dead Redemption.

Rockstar games feel so empty. You can't be creative. You have to do everything exactly how the developers wanted.

I miss being able to strategize and pick the perfect way to get past the supermutants, versus "ok do I autoscope with the carbine, or autoscope with dual volcano pistols"

A character in Fallout wants (thing). That's either a lead-in for a quest, or a side task. You can ask that person or random people in the world where to find it. They might ask for a bribe then lie to you about it.

Rockstar? [FIND HARMONICA FOR PERSON].

Can't ask the person about it. So you try the general store. Nope, can't ask him about it.

You hear someone playing a harmonica so you try to ask them about it. HEY THERE is all you can say.

Ok, guess we'll kill him and loot his body for the harmonica. YOU'RE SO STUPID, the developers didn't want you to find that harmonica, you're supposed to find a different harmonica hidden in a fireplace in an abandoned shack.

Sure RDR2 never crashes, but you're pressing A until the next cutscene. If you're playing with a controller, it's basically impossible to not use auto-aiming. The enemies are tiny pixels, sniping you from 700 feet away. Plus FRICK that one challenge where you have to shoot someone from 660 feet away, when the game's engine unloads non-hostiles at 600 feet and there's no actual distance indicator.

I really like rdr2 but when it comes down to it I can't ignore the feeling it's more of a movie-game kinda like GoW 4 (even worse if im honest) it has no replay value whatsoever.

You cannot interact with the trapper until 7am.

He is still going to stand there, like he does 24/7, but you cannot interact with him.

I specifically remember a mission on the island, you run to the top of the tower and you're supposed to be wowed by the bigass ship full of hostiles you're about to battle.

Except I missed it because I was looking at the minimap in the corner because that's all you're doing 95% of the time, with the remaining 5% being trying to control your tank of a character around a corner.

One of the worst parts of RDR1 was how every single save point was up a flight of stairs. The camera and character controls don't play nice with tight quarters

I've been playing the paper :marseymap2: mario :marseylueshi: 1K door release.

It's the first :marseywinner: rerelease of a game I've really :marseythinkorino2: enjoyed for a while. One of the few times the game was just as good as I remembered as a kid

It's turn based :marseyhesright: and simple :marseysmug4: so game mechanics don't feel too outdated.

It has a noticeable graphics upgrade (didn't expect because it's paper :marseygift: Mario)

It adds some minor :marseyminer: quality :marseycertified: of life improvements like for switching party :marseyrs: members and pipes :marseylueshi: for traveling to different :marseyvenn3: sections of the world.

It also adds a couple :marsey2commies: of additional boss fights that aren't intrusive on the original game.

Also adds an option to switch :marseyzeldagerudolink: to the OG music :marseysing: if you want the classic :marseyoldtimey: sound.

I played Indika. You play as a nun on the run in 19th century Russia. It's basically a version of Justine by the Marquis de Sade, and it somehow manages to avoid anything controversial. More of a critique of naiveté than virtue. When you get r*ped by the jailer, Indika is portrayed as being stupid for trying to befriend him, but it is pretty clear he was going to r*pe her anyway. So what were her options?

A. do not attempt to befriend the jailer, 100% chance of getting r*ped

B. do attempt to befriend the jailer, 98% chance of getting r*ped, might come off like a bumpkin

Only a Russian would think the answer is obviously A. 5/10

I'm at 110 or 120, and I hate having to use a non-replaceable item to change my stats. I use that giant Guts sword, but I need to rearrange things to whip out something quicker for invaders or whatever they're called, but experimenting is going to cost more than those 3 or so "change your stats" items I found. Why won't those regards let me pay in fake money or XP to reset everything?

!g*mers, this is why I stopped playing Elden Rangz. :marseysigh: (And because it got a bit repetitive; haven't finished the Giants of the Cold Lands or Whatever level).

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

but experimenting is going to cost more than those 3 or so "change your stats" items I found.

I think there are fifteen or seventeen of those total so 3 isn't so bad.

General advice:

Consider what strategy you're going for and grab an ash that supplements it, usually Flaming Srike/Lion's Claw, maybe Bloodhound's Step if you like the teleport.

Greatsword is perfectly viable for invader killing. The crouch+r1 gives you a quick poke like it's a rapier for some ungodly reason.

The mountain area is about the most boring in the game. It gets better after that.

Build advice

This is the first Souls game where a Str/Faith build has actual value as a hybrid since Clawmark Seal makes your incants scale with both Strength and Faith equally.

Try - https://eip.gg/elden-ring/build-planner/ for playing around with numbers.

Pump Vig to 50, End to your mid-roll point, and meet weapons minimums. Then decide how far you want to go with the rest. Faith at 25 gets you useful pre-fight buffs like "Flame, Grant me Strength" and "Golden Vow" plus utilities like "Frenzied Burst" for sniping at max lock-on range to pull enemies over and "Flame, Cleanse Me" to remove rot and poison.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Yeah, I was considering a Faith build. I just wish I could change stats and play around with the 16 weapons I've got to get a real feel for their damage. It sucks coming from that big butt sword because everything else does such little damage.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

I've tried the little dinky weapons a few times but never really liked them.

I'd suggest giving up on them and using a Brick Hammer, Great Stars or Giant Crusher to just bash things to death.

I like it, but it really just feels like an extra special sequel to the Dark Souls trilogy. It's a real treat for fans, but still dated and niche in other respects. If I was coming in from the outside, I think I'd mostly just notice the repetitive mini-dungeons, lifeless world, barely existent characters, etc.

I think the game would have been much better if they'd added a few actual towns (even Majula size) to meet the NPCs and shop, animated the NPCs, and written dialog for Melina at every site of grace. The Lands Between isn't supposed to be a zombieland like Lordran, but it generally feels like one, and this really undercuts the high fantasy adventure vibe.

It's really not that hard bro, there are way more masochistic game series out there. It's just because it's a fantasy adventure with decent and weighty action combat, which was honestly quite rare until the 10s. Up until then a lot of games still clung onto turn based or semi turnbased action combat

I finally got around to trying Stellaris. It's okay but feels like there are too many useless variables that bleed into one another. And the fact that you can exchange one for another so easily makes resource collection feel kind of pointless. The leaders don't feel like real people either unlike in say Crusader Kings. So the game just feels like watching a bunch of random numbers go up and down. But then I've only played for a couple of hours, maybe it'll improve later on idk

There is too much going on at the outset, most 4Xes understand that when DLCs add more features they should be dripfed over a standard campaign so that when you're new you can figure out what is going on bit by bit and not messing with the early game fun. Stellaris just throws mountains of bullshit at you a few minutes in before you even understand how things should interact. You can autism past it and eventually enjoy it but I'd rather just play a different 4x tbh.

Still playing Lords of the Fallen and I beat it for the first time a couple days ago.

Overall a solid 6/10. Could have been higher but there are some glaring design oversights with the quest designs, enemy diversity and especially with enemy placements.

I really loved the concept of the final "fight" where a helpless god is desperately trying to convince you to free him but it felt like there should have been a mechanic for you to actually help him if manages to sway you instead of being forced to finish butchering his little zombie dudes. Link for anyone interested.
