Game to Discuss?
This week, let's discuss/rate Elden RingDemon Souls VI, and its new DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree. Some prompts to start you off:
Why is this game worth playing for the 6th time?
Did GRRM's presence notably improve the lore?
Should I buy this even though I couldn't beat it the first and second time I tried it?
Are Souls games RPGs?
Is saying git gud homophobic?

Souls games are one of most platinumed games on psn profile. Since they are hard only for normies when in comparison to hard game as NG master difficulty or even hi-fi rush maximum difficulty are harder than souls game
Jump in the discussion.

They're most often platinumed because they're relatively simple to do so while 95% of other games need you to collect 1200 mail letters hidden in trash or some suchb

Souls games have some bs collectables like often you can't get all weapons spells on one go and there are some very abstract timed quests.
But thing what makes souls no that hard is you can overpower the content by lvl up
Witcher 3 is harder than dark souls its also a lot longer game but as you see booth games request same amount of time
I have platinum for Witcher 3 but not for Dark souls 3 because I ain't going to play the whole game again to unlock a stick I never going to use

What's NG and hi-fi rush?
I've been looking for hard games like DS, and that series and Elden Rings is all I could find.

Souls games are not hard, they are tedious.
The only 'difficulty' is 'boss with instakill attack' or 'boss that is really hard to deal with cause there's 2 of them'. None of the PS games are conventionally hard. They just have spongy enemies/instakill attacks that make neurodivergentis go

I don't think it's hard. Just a bit dated and clunky when fighting multiple enemies. If you do all the side quests and level accordingly it's not hard. But I already played it multiple times

DS feels baby difficulty. Once you know all the poorly choreographed boss attacks and instant kill death traps, you can breeze through it.
It took me a while to get to Sen's fortress. It took me significantly less (2hrs?) to make it with a second character. Not difficult; just bullshit deathtraps and instant kill attacks. IWBTG/Cat Mario syndrome.

DS1 is the only souls game I've beaten and I thought the map in that was really cool and perfect for that kind of game.
The open world in ER looks cool. But it just seemed to be padding the playtime. Most open world games are pretty easy even on the highest difficulty because reloading a save from more than 20 minutes ago is infuriating.

You have to give FROM credit where it's due, most open world games are just empty but ER made sure to pour content into every inch of that game and I never felt like going through an area was a chore or just put there to pad game time.

Workers and Resources: Soviet Republic just hit 1.0, so I've started playing it again. Tbh it hasn't changed much since I last played it. The biomes DLC is a little disappointing, I guess I'll need to wait for the community to create more fun maps to play it on, and they never improved the random map generator, but it's still an incredibly detailed game, probably the best successor to TTD to appear yet. The only downside is that it's incredibly slow moving, and everything takes time. Beyond that, it's been League, CS2, and Fallout 4, which stubbornly sits there, daring me to complete it.

same as simcity honestly. I never got hooked til I went to realistic, it's a whole different game, much harder, much more neurodivergent, but much more satisfying. You simply want to grow your republic and become self sufficient.

Finally started Baldur's Gate 3 for real. I'm enjoying the character and dialogue-based part of the gameplay because it reminds me of Mass Effect. On the other hand, while DnD combat is forgivable around the table with your friends (it feels like gambling with a storyline attached), it does not work well in a single player experience. It's lame when your attacks miss half the time, especially if the system depicts every miss with a half-assed dodge animation instead of blocks, parries, etc. Despite the developers giving you multiple ways to deal with most situations, it also still feels very limited compared to what even a novice DM could do in real life. And the save system essentially invalidates the luck elements as much as you want to.
I suppose this is all inevitable, but it makes me feel like the DnD brand does more harm than good for the game. Making an original RPG would let you design a better combat system, while removing the player's expectation to be able to do whatever they want.

When Chris Avellone was pouring his heart out to internet chuds, he said something interesting about Planescape: Torment. Getting all the animations done for every possible combination of weapons and armor was time consuming and expensive, so early on they decided to stick to a few classes of weapon and not let the player wear armor. Which then leads to the tattoo thing which becomes part of the story.

I went back to Tropico 4, the last one that retained any of the whole Caribbean island thing that it's supposed to be all about. It's a great game except way way too easy. Unless you're letting people starve to death they'll all love you and support you forever.
But then I notice in the map editor it lets you write some pretty complex scripts to do just about anything you could ever want to. So I'm going to make a lot of events, especially later in the game, where some people get pissed at you for no good reason and everyone has higher expectations. There's big parts of the game that I never even have to consider using like martial law, so I'm only playing half the game. So I'll put in an event where the army just imposes martial law on its own and you have to deal with all the negative consequences of it. The kind of challenge that leaders in third world shitholes have to face all the time.

play workers and resources. It's very similar to tropico in terms of feeding=love, except that feeding people is a lot harder.
Jump in the discussion.

I've been trying. (That's what got me to play Tropico actually.) It's pretty fricking infuriating though. In order to find out why my electricity wasn't getting to the substation, I had to follow the whole route of the powerlines zoomed in really close. Finally I find it: I have two power poles that are so close together that they're overlapping so it looks like they're just one pole until you zoom in. These two poles were not connected to each other. Now that to me is beyond just having a bad UI, I consider that a bug that it allowed those poles to be built within 1m of each other, and probably another bug for them not connecting.
So I've been trying, but it's about as fun and easy as a vacation in the Soviet Union.
Jump in the discussion.
No email address required.
It's usually pretty good (often too good) at snapping objects to eachother. Poles don't auto connect at all though, like everything else in the game, the electrical network is based on continuous lines. My suspicion is that you attempted to connect lines of dissimilar rated wattages, because in those cases the game will straightforwardly prevent them from connecting. It's not at all like Tropico or simicty though, because nothing is made larger for improved visibility, so sometimes you really do have to zoom in to see what the problem is. While the game technically has a (very rough) 3d tri grid as its basis, that is only used for terrain, which does cause its own problems, and unless you turn on snap to grid, objects can be freely placed, though most buildings have some zone of clearance that you have to take into account (infrastructure does not). Random other infrastructure tips: the game averages the slope of infrastructure segments (including roads) over their total length. This has interesting implications, the first being that if there's a steep drop off, you will use significantly more gravel, as there's more digging that must be done. Secondly, in some situations, the game will allow you to smooth out roads across longer stretches which have some protuberance in the middle. Planning mode helps with a lot of infrastructure related pains, so I highly suggest using it.

Okay thanks. I'll give it another shot. I had no idea terrain worked that way. Or that planning mode existed.

I played Tropico 3(?) years ago, or maybe it was the first one. Loved it decades ago, but when I tried again, I got bored of setting prices at each building. Total pain in the butt. I used to start with getting favor with the Russians to get those cheap tenement buildings, then farm, chop wood, and mine while building an army (having Castro as the dictator was nice because soldiers didn't need a HS education). Pay them well, and you'll stay in power forever. I remember the carpentry factory netting me a loss because I'd have to pay for my own wood which was r-slurred, so my island never really industrialized.

Mullet Madjack. Fast paced FPS roguelite with supercool art, a homage to '80s and early '90s anime before the libertarians and weebs and pillow humpers took over. Everything neon, robots with leather jackets and sunglasses, mohawks, lotsa blood and robot guts. You get 10 seconds per level (with 10 levels per floor and 10 floors in the game), and your kills grant you somewhere between 1-4 more seconds. A successful level will take about 50-90 seconds. Like all roguelites, some runs will go better than others depending on what upgrades you roll between levels. Really into it right now, adrenaline rush goodness.

Still "playing" magical research 2, according to the game I am 95% done. Completed "A terrible mistake" and some challenges "Danger" and "Primary".

I'm at my first loop when you fully unlock poison, and i'm gonna ask, is there any point to running anything but full water mana mage? Automatic combat with non-mage weapons and attack buffs looks too slow compared to normal spellcasting and the Mana rate boost is a godsend

You will hit a wall later that will force you to diversify. You will also eventually unlock the ability to have more than one primary (two to be exact), and mechanics that benefit from non-water elements. Crafting becomes more important later when you unlock the ability to combine items. But water will always be good, and you unlock a build defining item at level 31 or something. Poison is also not the last element you will unlock. You will unlock a mechanic eventually that makes it easier to keep the spells you want on auto cast without having to think too hard about how many wizards to allocate.
The remaining elements are:Mind (Increases mana capacity, has buffs that improve hit chance and unlocks hints for storylines, boosts the ability of your hired mages), Life (built around healing, shapeshifting, and a pet mechanic), Electricity (Gives access to crit, boosts spell damage and improves catalysts), Time (Lets you speed up the game more, letting you get more research and events), Death (Built around a mechanic called "rituals" which give boosts you need to beat the game, prevents your enemy from healing, has a strong instant kill spell for farming), Space (Increases storage space and has the hardest hitting spells in the game) and Holy (Also rituals, has spells that ignore armor and all late game enemies use it)
Also, the bonus you get to research and resources in future runs is based on the progress you have made in the different elements while they were your primary, so you benefit greatly from switching primary between loops.

I'm doing a Fear and Hunger playthrough.
Going mostly blind, but I look up a few things every now and then.
The game is fun in a weird way. I'm really enjoying it.
Shit like getting hit by a random event and then 50/50ing and dying isn't really 'fun' mechanically, but it adds a lot of atmosphere to the game if that makes any sense. It loops back into being fun.
I also sawed off all of the Girl's limbs and used her as a guinea pig and did tons of experiments on her. Mostly feeding her everything and seeing the effects.

I beat fnv I didn't 100% it but I did put 60 hours into it so I'm fine.
I don't know what else to play next. I want something story based that makes me want to jump in to see what happens next after work. I might try that persona 3 remake my wife keeps telling me to play. I wish I could play Elden ring or baldurs gate 3 but I can't really stand bad frame rates on steam deck. Maybe I'll just play plan escape.torment again
E: oh I'm playing selaco too even tho I hate gzdoom

Just started playing Elden Ring because I thought the weapons in the DLC looked cool not realizing they're only in the DLC areas (whoops). I think I've done my build wrong (I suspect I should have been pumping up health) and the world is feeling a little too open. Currently in the Siofra river area and the ghost ogres or whatever are nearly one-shotting me.

You will always get your build wrong in every souls game. You can restat after beating the magic academy and keep in mind that powering up your weapons at the smith does a lot of contribution to damage.

Most people recommend putting a lot of points in health. That area is pretty challenging if you visit early, but there are a lot of other places you can go. The hardest part of ER for me is convincing myself to walk away from a fight, but you have more fun if you're willing to do that.

The ghosts are supposed to be hard. Ironically the boss of the area (light the watchtowers) is actually a pushover. One of the coolest areas in the game.

I've been playing:
Spellmasons: It's a cute little indie game and is essentially a spell crafting, deck building roguelike inspired by Transistor and Noita. The later levels can get pretty monotonous when you figure out how to cheese the game. It's great with friends and goes on sale for $5 every now and then.
Destiny 2: The Final Shape: I really only played release (awful) and Forsaken (great) beforehand, and it's been fun for a few weeks now. I might pick up raiding again if they fully undo the raid damage rebalance since D2LFG has been unusually awful.
Tale of Two Wastelands: FO3 is boring enough that I should've just played FNV.
I also played here and there:
Team Fortress 2: The 100 player server has been fun.
Talisman: It's free and was fun to try with friends.
Eventually™:
Space Station 14: I'm trying to get my friends to join.
Abiotic Factor: Beat everything available so far and I'm really, really looking forward to the full release in about a year.
Starsector: When the new update releases.

My Inner Nintendo fan got pogged up at the direct

Plus, I decided to take some advice from /h/kappa and download Fightcade. Right now I only got MvC2 on it, but I'm really excited to try it out! But alas, I actually need to git gud before I hit any sort of public fights

Just snagged Cultist Simulator from the 75% off sale on Steam. That ate most of my afternoon and evening yesterday. It's fun, but I'm having trouble burning off all the restless/dread cards I keep getting and progressing into the running the cult phase.
I could probably look up a tutorial, but it's got a neat feeling going into the game blind.

Dead Space remake. It looks like how I picture the first one looking. The lighting and textures are pretty disappointing.
The game is fine, I keep picking it up which is a good sign, but there's way too much "you're locked in a room with 10 enemies" in the second half of the game.

I have the deepest love hate relationship with souls games, it's like an abusive relationship with a really hot chick who's crazy af. I'm not really good at any of them, never will be, I do whatever I can to cheese the bosses and when I can't I spend hours in misery trying to learn the patterns.
When I finally do beat the game I never go back to it and ever touch it again. But I have to play them and I have to beat them.

Beat the Elden Ring DLC so I'm gearing up to go through it again with knowledge that should (hopefully) prevent me from botching the couple of NPC quests that I did.
Loved the art style of the DLC as well as both the level and overall world design. A lot of the armor/weapons they added are somewhat more grounded than a lot of the more out-there armors in the base game, which I'm really happy with. The Black Steel Greathammer is my favorite weapon they've ever made and wielding it combined with Leda's chest piece and the rest of the Oathkeeper set is
.
I liked or loved most of the bosses, but hated Gaius and I'm still not a big fan of the final boss despite both the amazing OST as well as finally getting to seeMiquella . I liked some of the non-central pieces of the lore/story introduced with the DLC (Bayle , Marika's upbringing , Metyr ) and it was cool to finally see St. Trina in the flesh but the main story still doesn't sit right with me. I'm hoping there's some context that I'm missing, but that's probably just cope.

playin dat Rang game. pretty hard on my NG+3 main but making my way downtown. if I see something I want on an alt I swap to them and get it done, so I've done rellana on 3 seperate characters but it was hard as frick even with Leda and Lhutel (scadutree blessing + revered ash at 2 or whatever).
also playing BG3. I have made it to the githyanki creche and I admit I'm savescumming more than I'd like but even though it was obvious the zaithisk was a murder chair i still put laezel in it and her stats probably went down. so even though I won the fight after (and was expecting to lose) I scummed back and will just put my MC in now.
fricked laezel and made out with shadowheart, told laezel to cool it a bit. mostly party with them and Gale, swapping out for the other three when they're spent
