Game to Discuss?

This week, let's discuss Kenshi, which is arguably the most refined take on the Nu-Bethesda RPG. The story is nonexistant, the world strange, the companions memorable, and the settlement building refined.

As always, discuss below, and vote in the pinned comment

I really need to play this one. I downloaded it like a year ago, but it seems like one of those games with a pretty steep learning curve that you need to prod at for a while before you can figure it out.

Can anyone who's experienced with it give me a rundown of their favorite parts of it?

I play a lot and have enjoyed it greatly. My favorite part is trying to build my own settlement in a desert wasteland while only able to survive on cactus juice.

Rumor has it that GameCube support for retroachievements.org is finally coming tomorrow. I just finished Paper Mario 64 in preparation for finally trying TTYD and I'm exhausted so I decided to do a quick r-slurred bit of vidya today to kill time before GameCube era and I am playing

which apparently exists and is just awful. However I am 5/7 of the way through it already on a no-damage hardmode run so I should be able to 100% it for RA in an hour or so:

I played Disco Elysium. I was very impressed with how reactive the game was to everything you did and how you could go about solving the murder clues in almost any order. I'm going to sue the devs for blatantly stealing my likeness and life events.

I've been using the steam sale to pick up some older games I remembered fondly.

The first is Borderlands 2. I played split screen on an Xbox 360 originally, so playing on PC is one heck of a visual enhancement. The game itself is as good as I remember, which makes me wonder why Borderlands 3 was such a giant wet fart beyond just the bad writing.

The second is Sins of a Solar Empire and I managed to burn most of Saturday playing it, which also pretty much lined up with my previous experience. It really deftly manages to thread the needle on blending rts and 4x without becoming too bogged down by the latter.

Also played a bit of RimWorld; it's pretty much filling the niche left by The Sims for me at this point.

And a little Factorio with a friend. The biome we started in is a pretty lush forest which is completely different to what I experienced playing by myself. The factory we're making is way less spaghetti than the one I made by myself, which is nice!

This week, I played a lot of Workers and Resources. I didn't even do that much, but in realistic, everything takes time. I may have fricked myself over with the starting location, but I'll try to make it work regardless. Also started playing Sunless Seas. It's much less refined than Skies, but I got a solid evening out of it. That did inspire me to have another go at Book of Hours, the somewhat-sequel to Cultist Simulator, though a sorely unnoticed one, which is very interesting, with some rare actual quality writing in it.

I don't know about good, but it's certainly great. It's rough around the edges, but ultimately its grand scale and scope make it something utterly unique in the gaming world. If you enjoy (Open)TTD but find it ultimately a bit meaningless, I'd recommend it to you, as it's probably the closest comparison. All of the other citybuilding cowtools are similar to each other, though all have their own infuriating quirks (electricity has a complex HV/MV system which is challenging to reason with, water has cursed flow issues, sewage must go down slopes, heat pipes are extremely expensive). In sum, you need to have a lot of patience for how the game works, and while you certainly could just turn off certain systems (like fricking crime+justice), it's the most interesting with the full set of cowtools at your disposal (except autobuild). I fully recommend it.

I've been playing a bunch of stuff in an effort to make a dent in my shamefully large backlog.

Slime Rancher: Too cutesy for me but the actual game mechanics are decent so I'll continue on. Suck up a buncha little slime creatures with your vacuum gun, shoot them into pens, then feed 'em shit by blasting carrots and the like at their faces. But the first night I went to sleep in-game, by morning they had somehow bounced out of their pen and ate all the chickens in the neighboring pen! Why didn't the game tell me this could happen! :tayaaa: (the game probably did tell me this could happen and i just wasn't paying attention)

Reus: Seeing it's 11 years old and I bought it then, I'm just a bit late in getting to this one. God game where you give the world oceans and forests and shit so they can thrive or something, I dunno, I'm early on yet. Kinda clunky, almost seems like a mobile game.

Ark Survival Evolved: I did play this way back in its early-early access time and everything was broken and ran at about 5 fps. Now like 7 years later only half the things are broken and it runs at 10 fps, good job. And apparently they have a TV show coming up, as they proudly announce on the title screen of the game. I'll watch if the star of that show looks like a typical Ark custom character at 4'2", 300lbs., and a 6 foot wingspan, otherwise why bother?

Age of Empires 4 and Company of Heroes 3: These aren't backlog picks, just have been continuing on in the excellent campaigns of both these great games. Giving a shoutout to my bros.

Code Vein: Why is every weeby action game like this? I just wanna go slash monsters motherlover, yet of my first hour in the game probably 45 mins was spent in menus and tutorials learning how a needlessly complex weapon system works. Which I'm sure I will forget 90% of by the next time I play this clunkfest.

Necromunda Hired Gun: Some euro jank FPS looter shooter with a really cool H.R. Giger-like setting. Apparently it's Warhammer related but so are half of the video games released in the last 10 years. Also has a fairly elaborate weapons system but approaches it the right way compared to Code Vein: You can frick around with powering up your weapons and other stats, OR NOT. The game isn't contingent of spending a lot of time in menus doing bland shit, but rather shooting weird butt monsters in the face.

Finished the System Shock remake last weekend. I originally had mixed feelings on the game, it has some pretty glaring flaws, but sitting with it since then, I think it's more than the sum of its parts and was a pretty good experience.

System Shock (the remake). Not sure if I really like it yet, seems like half the game is backtracking and yet it's so easy to miss things

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

I just finished this recently and the backtracking gets a little better later on but never really goes away. I will say, the inventory system makes this much worse, so installing mods for that helps a lot. I used the grid size and cargo lift mods here and found it a lot more tolerable. It's easier to pick up important items and carry them around if you aren't constantly having to shuffle your inventory. Other than that, I enjoyed Medical but started to struggle in Research and Maintenance. If you can make it to Storage, the game starts to really pick up. Also, the sooner you can drop the security level on a floor the less of a hassle enemy respawns are, though even at 0%, sometimes Shodan has surprises for you.

I started my own fort for a little more Dwarf Fortress after my turn on rDrama's Mostibkun

I dunno about this GUI deal I am having to drag my mouse all over the place. The old interface was painful for some things like dwarf labor assignments but the core of moving around and building stuff was actually very good if you are capable of exiting vi

I looked in the Dwarf Therapist and I learned some Dwarves are gay now, doesn't seem like it shows in the game unless you check for two husbands in a marriage

Dwarves being gay is whatever, what's worse is that animals can be gay, in which lol gl starting a meat industry from a supposedly breeding pair. Strangely, I probably miss the inspect function the most, as that gave you more information on tiles than you get in the game currently.

Just finished Shadow Tactics, which was a great game :marseychefkiss:. I picked up the DLC as well as a few other games on sale. Just starting Age of Wonders 4, which seems cool so far.

More Elden Ring DLC. I'm getting filtered by some of these bosses but still making good progress. It doesn't help that I started it in NG+

Downloaded the Darkness Falls mod for 7 Peepees to Do and have been fun playing solo. I've cheated a bit because it was pretty difficult at first and wasn't having much fun, also downloaded the Fallout mod but haven't put much time into it.

Last night I bought Crimeboss because Payday 3 has been way worse than 2 since it's release. The roguelike campaign in Crimeboss has been fun so far. Pleasantly surprised as of now.

Bug Fables which is really fun, especially with hard mode enabled. I just beat Paper Mario TTYD remake and wanted to finally beat Bug Fables. Just waiting on College Football 25 so I can take some Podunk State to the playoffs.

Spez: I have been working for you for years, for free. I get abused, harassed, threatened, insulted, given death threats, my family insulted and threatened with harm and death, my personal info found and leaked, stalked, I have to see some of the most horrible shit there is and all to keep YOUR website running.

Where is our compensation? If you want to talk about things being fair and equitable, about how people have been expecting things to be free for too long and now it's time to pay the piper, where is OUR pay? I'll take cash, bank transfer, PayPal, or certain goods.

You can't have it both ways, so pay up.
