Game to Discuss?

This week, let's discuss Teardown, which made the rounds a few years (iirc) ago for its crazy voxel design, and immense levels of interactivity. The engine is very cool, at least, but I found the central gameplay mechanics somewhat limited, and failing to make the best use of the voxels in the game. Leave your votes in the pinned comment, and discuss below (if anyone else on this shithole has even played this game)

I really liked Teardown. Great art style and atmosphere. My 2 biggest complaints would be 1. the physics not being like Red Faction where buildings will collapse under their own weight after enough destruction (a single voxel can hold an entire building up) and 2. the campaign having too many filler missions in the mid section, someone else already mentioned this and it's a shame because the later missions where you've unlocked all the cowtools, the difficulty spikes and they introduce robots are the best ones.

I gave it an 8. If you're an xbot you can get the ultimate edition for less than $5 by :marseymerchant: from :marseyflagargentina: with a vpn and it's 100% worth that price.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

yeah the issue where a single voxel can hold up a building is unfortunate. The gameplay loop is also less fun than it could've been. I think the repetitive midgame speaks to issues with map creation cowtools/general workflow. Really hope they make another game out of it, because there's a lot of potential there which just isn't met by the final product.

Played through the Case of the Golden Idol. Had it on my radar for a while after hearing multiple people describe it as an "Obra-Dinn~ish" experience. Was really surprised with it, even though it does the formula of frozen murder scenes slightly different. Delightful throughout the whole length without too much of a challenge. The DLCs were somewhat underwhelming, but the systems and designs within them show potential for a sequel, which is supposed to come out later this year. Very cohesive game deserving of the comparison with Lucas Pope's opus. Considering it as a debut game from two Latvian brothers, it is a great indie vidya worthy of the awards and praise.

Due to heavy workload can't squeeze much more than an hour or two of civ6 or ck2 sessions per evening.

Booted up GTA4 recently on the Xbone to relive some memories and the emulator Microsoft has makes everything in the distance look like a pointillist painting. Don't remember 360 having these issues, but might be my nostalgia.

Any bethesdrone worth their salt should get familiarized with this gdc talk that came out recently. Confirms a bunch of fan theories about why the games they make are so jank and admits that Starfield's development was hellish because of the bureaucratic hierarchy that Microsoft imposed on them after the acquisition. Had to approve every decision with higher ups and forced to work with lots of other studios from across the globe. Too many cooks spoil the broth and make it extra bland.

More foids than I'd have guessed. I watched the Valve Half Life 25th Anniversary docu recently and it was funny that there was only a single woman on the entire team. Something seriously went wrong with this industry in the 2010s.

Among civ-likes, I've only played Endless Legend after it was recommended here, which I believe has the same developer as Humankind. The setting was cool and I've enjoyed the variety of possible factions, but the combat was really dreadful. I've nothing against using the world terrain for battles, but to turn it into a turn-based little mini-game is a stretch too far for me. Only have about 4 hours in that game, mostly messing with the different civs and seeing their gameplay quirks.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Yea I tried Endless Legend and it didn't grab me the same way most civ likes do. Maybe because the setting was too strange, idk. I don't know why the dev insists on using world terrain as battlemaps, and unit stacking in 2024 is a little unusual, but the game is otherwise great (Humankind). Old World is the best put together of the trio - very sharp game design and a pretty competent AI.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

I think there's mods that just remove most of the combat mechanics and the game is better for it. Once you know what you're doing its utterly broken because of the build your own unit mechanic.

I liked golden idol a LOT more than obra dinn. Obra involves a lot of time wasting with lead up animations and musical stings and such, while golden idol just lets you get right to the puzzling at a click without all the fanfare

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

It's largely a question of tone and style, with Obra Dinn being much more serious overall, as well as presenting each scene as a grand event. Golden Idol is more lighthearted and doesn't put the deaths at the center of the scene every time. I enjoyed both approaches and consumed both games in a matter of a few hours.

I believe there is more narrative and design competency involved in setting the entirety of the game in an enclosed space like a ship and pulling it off. It is one big continuous mystery with you having most of the info on hand already with every crewman's name and profession available to you - now it is up to the player to figure out exactly who is who. Golden Idol is unshackled by such limitations and possesses the freedom and variety of scenes as a result, as it essentially starts fresh every time. I was surprised when only one chapter of Obra Dinn turned out to take place outside of the ship, as I imagined the story to have an expedition to an ancient ruin or something among the lines to justify around 60 deaths happening.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

To be fair Obra Dinn doesn't really do much with those 60 deaths. There's one or two more unusual ones but the vast majority all just died from (the big event) or from (failing to escape the big event) and filling them in is less a mystery and more just busywork sorting through listing 20 guys as fallen in the water and drowning

The Robocop: Rogue City game from last year is major frickin' cool. Lumber around a burnt out Detroit shootin' perps and hearing sob stories from other perps, who you can let off the hook for street cred, or bust their butt for law enforcement cred. Lots of attention to slum neighborhood details in the graphics, I took like 30 screenshots in my first couple hours of play. Really enjoying it.

Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite. It's nice, but I hate that fighters at some point became combo spams rather than being able to just rely on good reflexes and good strategy to get you through. But I'm only casually into fighters, so maybe everything I said here is inaccurate.

Also been messing with the Xenia emulator a lot, the Canary branch. Even though it's not as polished as most emulators it's pretty incredible to be emulating Xbox 360 games this well and in 4K. Can't stop messing with it. Still need to keep messing with settings to get Saints Row 1 working well in 4K.

Also been playing a lot of :marseyrobber:Crimeboss Rockay City, which has been surprisingly so much fun. Glad I gave it a shot because Payday 3 just doesn't do it for me. Super Robot Wars 30. Its first one in 15 years to get a Western release. Like most not Original Generations (all inhouse originals) SRW Games the plot is a bit silly, its a mishmash of all the series in it's plots. Lelouch is the Emperor of Earth, the Walguru are attacking, Zanscare is working with the Sleeves, while Char Aznable is Quatro Bajeena and working with the AUEG.

As for the game play: turn based strategy. Missions are a solid length and difficulty is good.

I've heard the previous 3 are better, and did get an official English TL copy.

Yep it's probably bricked, but you can at least have fun doing the campaign for the first time with a shitty build.

I'm most of the way through Doom 64 at the moment. Only took me 27 years. I'm playing it via the Doom 64 CE mod for GZDoom, though, purely because it has the shotgun pumping animation. It always bothered me that there was no shotgun pump on the N64 version. I wish Night Dive would have made their version more mod friendly.

Teardown was fun, but at least when I played it in its development i found the lack of npcs to make everything feel barren.

I've been playing Stellaris after a five year break. They've changed virtually every system and the result is a game that isn't really any better than it was 8 years ago.

The UI is atrocious, the AI doesn't know what it's doing and there are lots of dumb bugs as well.

Its still a shitty 4x you just have like 50 mechanics thrown at you in the first 20 minutes. Last time I tried to play I tried to build a second science ship and found I couldn't hire a second scientist because of some stupid cap mechanic. It would probably make sense if I spent a while relearning everything but why would a 4x make the two scout start not immediately possible.

Still enjoying Cyberpunk - picked it back up a month or so ago and am enjoying it quite a lot. Even the soundt4rack is quite good.

I've been playing roboquest :marseyexcitedexosuit:and it's quickly becoming one of my all time favourite shooters.

The game is a fast-paced FPS rougelike with borderlands style level ups and weapons plus immaculate movement. You can bunny hop, grind rails, rocket jump, slide, ground pound, super jump, triple jump, jet pack, and grapple hook. The weapons are numerous, diverse, and universally satisfying.

In addition, the game is challenging. Even standard difficulty delivers rushing dopamine as the screen fills with killer robots ready to prey on your every mistake. Melting through them with a late game build never fails to fry my brain.

Very good, I recommend :marseyinjured:
