Game to Discuss?

This week, let's discuss Teardown, which made the rounds a few years (iirc) ago for its crazy voxel design, and immense levels of interactivity. The engine is very cool, at least, but I found the central gameplay mechanics somewhat limited, and failing to make the best use of the voxels in the game. Leave your votes in the pinned comment, and discuss below (if anyone else on this shithole has even played this game)

Played through the Case of the Golden Idol. Had it on my radar for a while after hearing multiple people describe it as an "Obra-Dinn~ish" experience. Was really surprised with it, even though it does the formula of frozen murder scenes slightly different. Delightful throughout the whole length without too much of a challenge. The DLCs were somewhat underwhelming, but the systems and designs within them show potential for a sequel, which is supposed to come out later this year. Very cohesive game deserving of the comparison with Lucas Pope's opus. Considering it as a debut game from two Latvian brothers, it is a great indie vidya worthy of the awards and praise.

Due to heavy workload can't squeeze much more than an hour or two of civ6 or ck2 sessions per evening.

Booted up GTA4 recently on the Xbone to relive some memories and the emulator Microsoft has makes everything in the distance look like a pointillist painting. Don't remember 360 having these issues, but might be my nostalgia.

Any bethesdrone worth their salt should get familiarized with this gdc talk that came out recently. Confirms a bunch of fan theories about why the games they make are so jank and admits that Starfield's development was hellish because of the bureaucratic hierarchy that Microsoft imposed on them after the acquisition. Had to approve every decision with higher ups and forced to work with lots of other studios from across the globe. Too many cooks spoil the broth and make it extra bland.

The plush I believe represents Michael Kirkbride, the author of much of the Elder Scrolls lore who gets insanely glazed by nerds nowadays.

wb king. Have you played any of Old World/Humankind/Millennia? Very interesting civ-likes, all.

Among civ-likes, I've only played Endless Legend after it was recommended here, which I believe has the same developer as Humankind. The setting was cool and I've enjoyed the variety of possible factions, but the combat was really dreadful. I've nothing against using the world terrain for battles, but to turn it into a turn-based little mini-game is a stretch too far for me. Only have about 4 hours in that game, mostly messing with the different civs and seeing their gameplay quirks.

I think there's mods that just remove most of the combat mechanics and the game is better for it. Once you know what you're doing its utterly broken because of the build your own unit mechanic.

Yea I tried Endless Legend and it didn't grab me the same way most civ likes do. Maybe because the setting was too strange, idk. I don't know why the dev insists on using world terrain as battlemaps, and unit stacking in 2024 is a little unusual, but the game is otherwise great (Humankind). Old World is the best put together of the trio - very sharp game design and a pretty competent AI.

More foids than I'd have guessed. I watched the Valve Half Life 25th Anniversary docu recently and it was funny that there was only a single woman on the entire team. Something seriously went wrong with this industry in the 2010s.

I liked golden idol a LOT more than obra dinn. Obra involves a lot of time wasting with lead up animations and musical stings and such, while golden idol just lets you get right to the puzzling at a click without all the fanfare

It's largely a question of tone and style, with Obra Dinn being much more serious overall, as well as presenting each scene as a grand event. Golden Idol is more lighthearted and doesn't put the deaths at the center of the scene every time. I enjoyed both approaches and consumed both games in a matter of a few hours.

I believe there is more narrative and design competency involved in setting the entirety of the game in an enclosed space like a ship and pulling it off. It is one big continuous mystery with you having most of the info on hand already with every crewman's name and profession available to you - now it is up to the player to figure out exactly who is who. Golden Idol is unshackled by such limitations and possesses the freedom and variety of scenes as a result, as it essentially starts fresh every time. I was surprised when only one chapter of Obra Dinn turned out to take place outside of the ship, as I imagined the story to have an expedition to an ancient ruin or something among the lines to justify around 60 deaths happening.

To be fair Obra Dinn doesn't really do much with those 60 deaths. There's one or two more unusual ones but the vast majority all just died from (the big event) or from (failing to escape the big event) and filling them in is less a mystery and more just busywork sorting through listing 20 guys as fallen in the water and drowning

I appreciated that it allowed very free-form solutions. For example you can identify people by uniform or language well before the "normal" clues.
