Game to Discuss?

This week, let's discuss Elite: Dangerous the latest (and greatest?) sequel to the progenitor of all vidya starshit: No Mans Sky, notably (@MAGAShill), as well as Starfield (I think, haven't played it), Starsector (probably the best successor), and probably in some sense, every single game where you fly a spaceship. I won't go into the whole gory history of Elite, though features in it have made it to most every other space game: shitty procedural generation, the trade of goods of varying and dubious legality, and the seemingly ubiquitous engines - shields - guns power distribution system.

Unfortunately, Elite: Dangerous is hardly what I'd call innovative. While it did have the incredibly large randomly generated universe in common with, and prior to, No Mans Sky, for much of its existence planets were nought but pretty orbs to glance at from the comfort of your spaceship, which admittedly cut down on dev costs. The latest expansion supposedly makes planets into places you can visit, but I haven't, and probably won't purchase it, as it's apparently pretty dogshit. The game also has cosmetics purchasable with real world currency for some bizarre reason, which is pretty offputting. Beyond this, the vast majority of the gameplay loop resembles a simplified take on European Truck Simulator. You mostly travel from station to station, with various cargos, the specifics of which don't matter much. This gets boring real fast, tbh.

Despite all these flaws, this game isn't irredeemable, simply because it has the most detailed model of what a spaceship might look like/function. The asthetics are on point, and it feels properly futuristic in a way that similar games fail at. It even has a :soyjakwow: diegetic interface, which does a lot towards making you feel immersed. Too bad the core gameplay's shit though. Leave your opinions/thoughts below, and vote in the pinned comment.

Elite Dangerous is a frustrating game in that it could have been the pinnacle of space games, but just fell flat. And not in the way a typical AAA game does. The devs obviously care, and they made a lot of deep games for autismos but this one just doesn't have that I wanna play for a month straight to figure it out gameplay. Almost everything you do is pretty straightforward, and the things that aren't are just dumb (engineering). They tried to somewhat fix this with Odyssey but that was a disaster and even now that it's fixed you do one planet mission and wonder why you would ever want to do that again.

The game I will say always looked beautiful, on a pancake and VR. I mean VR was almost a killer app imo, but normies can't handle the spinning. And the draw to just explore is always cool with how big the galaxy is. But it's better left to youtubers

The main issue with Elite is that it has a bunch of gameplay loops that never really overlap with each other and once you've played that loop for an hour you've seen pretty much everything it has to offer.

If you're a big space sperg exploration is probably going to tickle your brain but aside from that other games do what Elite does better.

I will soon start Dragon Age 2. I expect it to be good and just as good as Origins and BioWare is definitely still has good as they were in 2008 :marseyaware:

Honestly I'll probably enjoy it because my expectations are low going in.

I'm also on an rpg kick right now so I'll try other games after. Between the following which would rDrama play first? Greedfall, Risen, or a Fire Emblem like game called Banner of the Maid?

Btw I also have my own idea for a Fire Emblem like game of my own. These ideas have been swimming around in my head for years but I've just now worked out the true meat and potatoes of how it would work. Course it remains to be seen if I can code my own ideas :marseybottom:

I really :marseythinkorino2: enjoyed greedfall my only issue is that I didn't feel a need to replay it. If you're just wanting an rpg to run through it's 100% worth a play. Aesthetically cool as heck too.

I've played Banner of the Maid since it combines my neurodivergent love of history, anime, and tactical RPGs into a single game. It's pretty good for it's pricetag I gotta say. It is surprisingly challenging, definitely not easy, and also you get some pretty huge butt battles. Not a ton of variety in classes but you really have to use them all and fight as a balanced unit or you're fricked. Also it is surprisingly long, it just goes on and on. Only real downsides are that it can get pretty grindy and the menus are butt. If you like Napoleonic-era warfare and everyone from that era reimagined in anime form, check it out.

They fixed the most egregious stuff but the game is still super buggy, including progress blockers. I wonder if you can still glitch into the hotel level after the story mission because that was pretty fun to do.

Finished Pathfinder: Kingmaker. Really nice game, although the kingdom building has much less impact than what I would've liked. Other than some immunity to poison/fear research, all you need is to do the minimum to keep your kingdom floating above the deluge of problems that show up randomly. I would argue that the main plot is tighter than Wrath of the Righteous, but it becomes a bit too dry near the end (after the festival in Pitax). Perhaps they ran out of cash and decided to plow through with the core plot threads. I still think Wrath is the better game (both gameplay and story), but Kingmaker is worth a playthrough or two.

It's because the early access-cels from Kickstarter complained about muh strategy in muh RPG so the devs progressively made it less and less impactful.

I continue with Kenshi. I now have my original moid, a couple lizardpeople, a very darkskin man, and a mayofoid. I have a little house in an area that seems safe and some beginner production facilities. I found out I have to pay tax, and I feel like I better pay, because the government has strapped troops and my guys can only sometimes beat up malnourished hoboes. So far it's holding my attention. Just I don't feel like reading too much in the way of guides and wikis right now, so someone tell me if it's foolish to continue without knowing what I'm doing. It took a while before I realized my original guy was not the Player Character.

I picked up Armored Core VI, the new Tomb Raider games, Signalis, and Worker's and Resources: Soviet Republic during the last steam sale.

Finally diving into the Ultimate Admiral: Dreadnaughts campaign mode.

Ngl kinda mid so far - normal difficulty is comically easy and the AI is really dumb on all difficulties. Game needs some more work before I would recommend.
