Ever since the Endurance update I have had idle fancies of doing a freighter-only run. Initially it was going to be one of the huge capital ships because those have the highest possible inventory and stats, but the regular smaller freighters come in much cooler designs and so two years later when I finally got around to doing that freighter only file I have opted for one of those; to my detriment, but there are much cooler ones.

After thinking it over for a few days, I decided on the parameters for the freighter only save file. It's permadeath of course (max stack sizes remain the only real challenge in PD, and they're more of an annoyance than anything). Freighter only does mean freighter only.

  • There will be no other ships aside from the default Radiant Pillar which I will slowly upgrade to max slots and S class. Repaired crashed ships can be salvaged and scrapped for cash and tech though.

  • There will be NO terrestrial bases at all including farms and mines (stellar extractors and cultivation chambers make these technically unnecessary on the commodity crafting path anyway).

  • I will buy nothing aside from tech modules which can't rightly be acquired otherwise.

  • No use of hubcoin or exploits.

  • All transportation between systems is done via freighter. This is particularly frustrating because since Endurance, even otherwise basic freighter technology (i.e. the hyperdrives for different stellar classes) is only accessible via research with Salvaged Frigate Modules and these are an absolute nightmare to obtain. Even a Cadmium drive takes 6 of the frickers.

Around the 15 hour mark, the Radiant Pillar is B class, it has an almost maxed Positron Ejector which has so far proven to be adequate even for pirate dreadnoughts, though it will surely lose if it goes up against a Sentinel one. Will attempt that in 25k nanites when I upgrade it to A for higher base stats. Still handles like a boat even with a near-maxed pulse engine.

38m units, 5k nanites on hand (I have been spending nanites as fast as I get them so this is not accurate, I've likely had around 120k total so far. I prioritized cultivation chamber and some decor research for the freighter over utilities though this is now changing; 3 SFM down, need 6 more to visit red stars with the thing.

Found a decent A class rifle in a space station, terrestrial combat is trivialized albeit slower than I'm used to as it's still pants compared to a staff, exotic or atlantid MT.

Rolling around in an ugly A class freighter at the moment, I'll begin hunting for an Enterprise-style S class one soon. Been running derelicts trying to find SFMs faster with little luck and it's prohibitively expensive so I may resort to piracy soon if the guild mission boards don't start having better rewards.

All in all it's been a lot of fun so far and it's going well.

That depends! How much money are looking for? Like the best money making method is a series of huge farms and mines but that requires a supply chain set up across a dozen planets or so and a large commitment to building that shit in the first place and then the crafting path to spam fusion ignitors + stasis devices. That'll get you to max units from 0 once every 16 hours if you want it to but it's elaborate to set up.

Example farm (I didn't name the system stfu), just generalized though instead of the specific purpose you'd want if you REALLY want to minmax cash for no real reason.

If you're just looking for a few million here and there, 3 S-Class scanner modules in your multitool will make everything you can pay from 60k to 500k, whether it's flora, fauna, or mineral. Good passive income.

Frigate expeditions are enormously profitable passive income especially with the storage augmentations they'll bring back en masse. Frigate fuel is a headache to produce in bulk but you can buy dihydrogen jelly by the tens or hundreds and then refine it back to dihydrogen pretty quickly, then you just need tritium which you can buy or if you're feeling masochistic, mine manually from asteroids.

A cheesy easy way is finding a dissonant planet and repeatedly scrapping the downed interceptors, probably 50m each ship. This feels cheap to me but really it's whatever you want it to be.

Straight up mines are pretty good, we made a gold mine colony in the Hub on permadeath for fun called El Dorado and it's wildly impractical but basically unlimited money with a lot of tedium.

Yeah, I tried smuggling for a while but that was slow.

Currently hunting for a good sentinel ship so scrapping the crap ones has been profitable, but it's not particularly fun and can't be automated.

Good idea on the dihydrogen, that's been a constant problem. Perhaps I do just need to unlock more mining stuff. Is gold the best material to mine?
